Today I lucked into a brand new, freshly unboxed 1977 Bally Miss Universe! Never even had a ball rolled on the PF since unboxing. The glass and lockdown bar are still taped together!! It doesn’t turn on at the moment. But hopefully I can get it up and running soon.

Backstory? Where would you find a 1977 NIB ?
Pretty game

#3 3 years ago

Facebook marketplace of all places. It was way out in the sticks of the Cherokee Forest. I'm not entirely sure how the guy I got it from came to have a NIB bingo, but he unboxed it recently and it wouldn't power on. He opened up the back, figured the Transformer was bad and started trying to sell it.

#4 3 years ago

Congrats friend, great find.

#5 3 years ago

Wow, way cool. I have no interest in bingos, but if it was new...yes!

Since it is new, was it shipped without the fuse installed? Maybe that is why it doesn't power on?

#6 3 years ago

So far I have found that nearly all of the fuse holders are brittle or broken.
Tomorrow morning I have an onsite repair, so I will wait until I get home from that to unload my tools and replace them. That will also give me a chance to document it in pictures before I go messing with it.

I have also learned that it did come from Ebay, back in January.

#7 3 years ago

Ok, well I am going to need some guidance. I have so far replaced or jumpered all of the fuse holders. No change. Is there something you have to do to these things, besides flip the power switch, to turn them on? It has been too hot the last few days to spend much time in the garage with it, just late nights. Also, there are locks on the side of the cabinet, what are those for? The PO must have tossed out the manual as I can't find it anywhere inside the machine.

#8 3 years ago

turn on the power switch and the "general illumination" lights should come on ... the playfield lights and some behind the backglass.

if you add some credits to the replay register manually, then turn on the game, the credits should get removed.

when the game is on and sitting there with 0000 credits, you need to either flick the coin switch or use a key to turn the lock on the side of the cabinet repeatedly to add credits.

the manual and schematic can be downloaded from http://bingo.cdyn.com/machines/bally/miss_universe/ in the red "resources" box.

if you can post (email to [email protected] is even better) the highest possible resolution pictures of the paper tags inside the head and the reflex unit wipers (with enough wiring in pic to see the wire colors), that would be great. Reflex unit is bottom of back door.

email as many pictures as you like.

the best pictures are ones you can zoom in on and read the labels.

#9 3 years ago

Are there 5 balls in the trough, and are they bingo balls? Put a few dozen credits on it like baldtwit said. Lift up the playfield and make sure the shutter motor under the playfield can turn and is sitting at "home" position.
Great find! I have 2 Miss Universes that I haven't set up and tested yet. Both are clean, but not mint like yours. Funny Bally typo on the tempered glass label - "disintergrate"!

#10 3 years ago

The glass has never been off, it is still sealed. I can see the balls. So yes they are in there. And it is a 3 ball game I do believe, not 5.

When the switch is flipped on, nothing happens at all. It is just dead. I'll grab the schematics and see where the power stops at.

Thanks,
Randy

I will happily take some pics and send them to you. Is there anything else you need pics of as well?

I pulled down the schematics.. man I really have to get better with EMs and their schematics.. But anyway... I have voltage at the transformer and not at the fuses. Flipping the power switch does nothing. Later, I will remove the table holding the lockbar to the glass, pull the glass and see what is up at the power switch.

I found the goodie bag!

Also baldtwit , I sent you two emails full of pics. let me know if you need anything else.

#14 3 years ago

got 'em. thanks! I'll email with q's about the stuff on the program unit shaft.

If I put my ground lead on the ground strap on the transformer and put the positive on various pegs on the jones plugs, I see various voltages. But I have squat all at any of the fuses or at the power switch. So I have to chase down this grey with yellow stripe wire and see what is going on. So far, it is very confusing to say the least.

#16 3 years ago

I don't mind admitting that it took me an hour to figure out that I had to remove four screws to raise the playfield.

#17 3 years ago

All all of the Jones Plugs connected properly? You may have missed connecting one of them.

Quoted from MrBally:

They are. I dd some more testing with fresh DMM leads and jumpers. I have 121 volts from the plug to the switch. Both sides of the switch, regardless of if it is on or off. I also tested continuity to be sure. The Grey wire from the cord, to the switch. Good. To the other side of the switch, which is thew grey yellow wire.. also good, regardless of switch position. But no continuity back to the transformers Grey Green wire. So, the switch is confusing me and I also have to find where they wires change from grey yellow to grey green.

#19 3 years ago

I can’t believe I missed it. It wasn’t until a Facebook member asked about the jones plugs that I even considered they could be wrong.

If I had disassembled this pin to transport it, I would never have known why it did not work for the Previous owner. He had the left harness on the right and vice versa!

It still doesn’t play, but it turns on and stuff happens! It’s just stuck in tilt atm it seems. And yes, the tilt Bob has been adjusted from its locked down shipping position.

Its always nice to see the lights come on for the first time.....
**** Its a "Learning Experience", enjoy the Ride.

#21 3 years ago

I just set up my 2 Coinopwarehouse Miss Universes and had similar problems getting them to start up. Try opening the back door and manually turn the relay reset cam a little (lower left on door). It should spin around once like a score motor and reset the trip relays, including the "tilt" relay. This got my machines to come to life and start working.
Here's MU #1 paying out a win. Odds lights are not lighting up for some reason but everything else is working.

here's the first undocumented bit from randy. Anyone with a MU and want to double-check my typing go for it.

still to go is the reflex unit, random spot disc and flash disc. Anyone with a MU want to help let me know so randy doesn't have to put up with me for all of it

Beautiful pin! Thank you, I will give that a shot!

I am MORE than happy to work with baldtwit ! He has been a tremendous help to me as well. Besides, I regularly procure resources for Virtual Pinball projects, with all the pins I work on. So why not try to help the real pin community too

Not to mention, All I have to do is take pics and stuff. Phil is the one documenting everything. That is the hard work!

#25 3 years ago

This is what the table does at this point.

#26 3 years ago

info from randy results in the random/random spot disc diagram.

next up is the reflex unit...which has wires attached that aren't on the schematic. Guess is a change to the 3 step relay proportioning circuit around schem G-46. The manual is also inconsistent, but that's nothing new.

with a bit of luck, a brown/black wire attached to the reflex contact plate ends unattached in the harness near the 3 step relay. If the wire is attached to a 3 step relay blade, then there may be another schematic for miss universe.

Looks like it's mostly working! Set up a "winner" of 3 or more in-line...when you're done shooting (placing) balls, press the "R" button to collect the win. It doesn't do anything after you win until you hit that button.

#28 3 years ago

Yea the R button has worked 3 times and not worked about 100 times So Still gotta figure that out.

bingopodcast should appear any moment to help troubleshoot the win detection circuits! Also, make sure the switch under the button is clean and working right. Everything is "new" and probably adjusted correctly, but some light switch cleaning might be needed to remove oxidation off of any switches that still aren't working.

#30 3 years ago

Holy shit! Just found this thread. That game looks amazing for the age, and the goodies look so fresh and clean too. I’ve never played a bingo but I’m intrigued by them. Just digging through the schematics and cabinet must be so much fun.

#31 3 years ago

Every EM flipper collector needs at least one Bingo pin. Then it's one of each type, Magic Screen, Six Card, Mystic Lines, Miss America etc..

#32 3 years ago

The before 3rd trip relay needs to have tripped before the game will allow you to engage a search for a winner. Going off of memory here as my phone can't display the schematic properly off @baldtwit's site. Speaking of, his site is a treasure - bingo.cdyn.com, if you haven't seen it. Miss universe is a bit unique in the bingo world, but some of the basics hold true.

Ok, to your problem:

When the ball lifts to the playfield, a unit called the timer steps up, as the ball is shot through the gate at the top, it will trip the before 2nd/before 3rd trip relays as appropriate (if memory serves). This means you should be able to collect after shooting only two balls. If not, those relays aren't tripping, and if they aren't tripping, then the timer would be the next unit to observe.
