What are some good approaches to scoring? I'm struggling to crack much over half a billion. Tend to work my way through the paddocks as best I can but my scoring is all over the shop. What is your approach?

#6003 3 years ago

I’m not really any better then you since my best score is also around 500 mil. But I think a key is to get the C shot early so you can get to chaos multiple easily through the natural course of play.

Quoted from OLDPINGUY:

I filed down my screw as well, and it got better, but still too many rattles.
I replaced it with a smaller countersunk head and it went flush.
I then covered the ramp entrance with a small piece around 3/4" of mylar.
Lowering the power of the upper right flipper helps tremendously. Go 10%, then 15% etc, for your sweet spot.
I believe default is 235, I am now at 185, but have been happy up to 215.

Thanks. I will try that as well. My issue was that the ramp was installed incorrectly. Thanks ectobar for the pics. That helped fix. No more issues and making the shot now.

I have IMDN figured I should have Mr Elwins other game
I buy from company down south. He is my fav source for NIB
Clear might be great since its had a year to cure, or could be bad guess I will find out.
I'll check the flipper post deal.
Thanks

You might also want to check alignment of the optos for the left orbit and the T-Rex ramp entrance. There were some issues with the left orbit opto not registering balls at high speed. For the T-Rex entrance opto, balls hopping up slightly weren't triggering it sometimes.

And even if the post at the 3rd flipper isn't loose right now you might want to check to see that there's a nut under the playfield holding it tight. If I recall correctly early production machines didn't have a nut under it. If you don't have one then you might want to add one, because even with a nut it will likely work its way loose once in awhile and without one it will likely happen a lot more frequently. If that post is loose it could cause chipping on the playfield at the base of the post.

Also, might be worth adding some small fabric washers under the apron and at the end of the ball guide at the entrance to the left orbit. If the bottom edges of the apron or the ball guide are resting on the playfield they will likely dig into the playfield and scrape it. Here are a couple posts I made showing what I did:

Mine is loose but i dont really notice it effecting gameplay. Is it really something worth putting in a request for?

Quoted from JellyNeck:

It's not about gameplay, if the post is loose, then when the ball hits the post it'll start cracking /chipping the clear on the playfield around it.

The new post is longer, has washers top & bottom and a nylon nut to help lock it tight - they produced the fix because of the playfield issues being seen

I preordered my pro model. I have one of the very first run off the line. I forget the exact build date, BUT, I also have a slight bit of pooling under a few of the small posts. It has never been an issue. It's never gotten worse. I'd just keep an eye on it. Chances are you'll be fine. No need to panic. Enjoy your new machine

Yes, if it gets loose and you dont notice it, slamming the post with the ball can cause chips in the clearcoat. It's a free and easy fix.

Sorry, I’m sure this has been covered a bunch but I’m just getting into this thread now. I assume the post you’re talking about is in front of the upper flipper. Is that something that needs to be replaced if it’s loose? Can it just be tightened?

The early run games had a machine threaded post and was simply screwed into a tnut under the PF. This worked it's way loose. The fix was a longer threaded machine post and adding a locking nut also to keep it in place. Later runs all have the update. First run pros owners need to check and get the updated parts from Stern, if they haven't already.

Quoted from Huggers:

What are some good approaches to scoring? I'm struggling to crack much over half a billion. Tend to work my way through the paddocks as best I can but my scoring is all over the shop. What is your approach?

There are so many different ways to play this game this is actually a pretty hard one to answer.

For me, I focus on trying to get perfect paddocks for the added scoring bonus plus the added points for rescue streaks. These are where you collect the dino but also save all the employees. You don't have to save them before capturing the Dino so for the first couple paddocks this is pretty easy to do and the perfect paddock bonus is 15millionish alone, not including the added rescue points. The next thing I do is focus on control room modes. The restore power one can be crazy valuable if you shoot the spinner a couple of times before starting to collect shots. Shots start at 3 million but each spinner shot it goes up rather quickly. The virus attack mode is worth about 100 million itself if you complete it. If you can find that left shot it's actually pretty easy to complete.

The other tip, for the T-rex MB. Do not play that MB at 500K (the first value) collect 3-4 of the build up shots first to get that starting value at 3 million or higher. This isn't all that hard to do. I normally do the spinner, to tower to helipad shot. Then straight to the T-Rex. Now if you collect the jackpots in order you are looking at some really good points as they double each time.

I actually don't focus to much on Chaos as the scoring isn't all that good until you get to at least the second stage of that MB, which for me isn't all that easy. Plus it makes collecting your dino's much hard with all the balls in the way.

Lastly, if you can hit that right ramp consistently, shoot it as often as possible. Every 4th shot starts Pteranodon Attack. Start it then avoid the right ramp for the first couple of times you play it. Focus 100% on the spinner shot as switch hit's build it's multiplier which carries over. This is an overlooked scoring opportunity. Colin M, Karl D and I focused on this strategy a couple weeks ago to see how much we could exploit it and they were able to score 3 billion and 5 billion from this mode alone. Us mortals aren't scoring that high but if you play the first couple buy building the multiplies only and the 3rd one you build up the value (again, switch hits which will also increase multipliers) and you collect in the last couple of seconds of the mode (right ramp) you can have a couple hundred million alone from that.

Quoted from chubtoad13:

Is that something that needs to be replaced if it’s loose? Can it just be tightened?

I would say yes and yes. I recently acquired an early run pro and the post started loosening after a couple of hundred games and now will only be good for a few games after I tighten it. I just yesterday added an extra screw into the bottom of the playfield to stabilize the locking nut (as was suggested somewhere above) and added blue locktite to the threads and so far it is staying tight after about 10 games. However, I plan to contact Stern for the new post as I feel like it probably going to come loose again eventually. Now that I am paying attention to it, that post takes a hell of a beating, especially on my plethora of missed "O" shots.

I gave it a really proper tightening this morning. Mine was a February 2020 build, so i'm hopeful that I already have the right post. I've only had the game a month, hoping this pic doesn't look too bad to you all with a keen eye.

You can see it under the playfield but i guess you already got the new post as you got the new "no art around posts"
At least you caan't see any damage on your pic.

So is everyones Upper Right fliper staged like picture above?
When ball returns out of O lane across upper flipper it bounces of post down to left flipper or sling.
Just want to make sure this is how game was supposed to return out of the O lane

#6023 3 years ago

I have a very high end translite that came with my game. I was going to use it for wall art but I can't figure out a way to hang it so I'm going to sell it for $150 plus shipping, unless you want to pick it up in person. It's a direct transfer to acrylic. The previous owner paid $200+ dollars.

This is as designed to prevent continuing straight on that path and going SDTM.

I’m looking for a Pro (because the Premium is obscene money over here) and it’d be useful to have it clearly listed.

My 2 cents worth? Sure why not, LOL. Most all the clearcoat issues were minor. Sure there were a few that looked pretty bad, but most people were just being crazy over picky because all the hype surrounding the issue. My machine has slight pooling from the factory that has never gotten any worse. Not 1 person ever has seen my game and noticed it. It doesnt affect gameplay. As far as dimpling goes, it's a brand new playfield, it's going to dimple. Pinballs are heavy and can carry some serious momentum. Once you play enough, it all ends up looking uniform anyway. Of course, if you bought NIB and the playfield was really bad, Stern will stand behind their product. I guess my point is, dont stress out too much about it. Pinballs are meant to be played, they aren't museum pieces.

Quoted from JonCBrand:

Yep that'd make a huge improvement!

Oh a few other things:
1. The early JP's seemed to have a bad batch of flipper coil stops, so you may find that a flipper goes all weak. This was typically seen in the first couple of hundred games. The knob of the coil stop detaches from it's bracket. So worth grabbing 3 spares as you'll most likely need them.
2. While the newer code will have dialed down the default power setting for some of the coils, it's worth checking the trough kickout into the shooter lane - people were noticing chipping in the shooter lane opposite to the kickout hole. So you might want to lower the power right down (I think mine is on the lowest setting)

I've been searching for a JP premium to go with my DE JP...and I joined the club today!!
I'm a huge movie fan (I saw the original JP opening week in the movie theatre in '93), I love sci-fi, and it is easily one of my favorite newer pins. Needless to say, I have a major connection to it!

I finally got around to doing my last mod, one that I wanted to do for a long while..Turned out awesome I think.

Used a 9/64 drill bit to drill out the spun rivets in the matchbox helo and separated the 2 halves and removed the landing gear...then used a grinding wheel to flatten the top of the helo to give clearance for the metal blades while using the factory bushing plate mounted under the plastic (didn't change that setup at all). I then used a step cone bit on the top of the helo to widen a whole large enough to give the plastic sleeve for the rod and the washers connecting the blades with ample room to turn uninhibited. (Basically the helo just sits around the original post)... Finally used a dremel to give some clearance for the 3 screws on the helo pad and fastened the helo to the pad with 3M tape.

Pretty easy mod all together, just need the right tools to start.

Love how it turned out

Not sure about his install but I had to put mine in that direction or the tail of the helicopter would get in the way of the ball. For the Prem/LE you can't move it around as the blades have to line up to where the spinning blade mech comes through the PF. On a Pro you could easily go either direction.

It gave the best clearance centering in the pad for the chopper... Also, it just gave a better profile look looking down the playfield...I guess your could try to force it for the premium /le but I think you'd have to do some fabricating to get it to fit for the tail... Plus it gave some better visibility to the red flasher

Tower Shot- Big thanks to Ectobar for the tip about the tower ramp install. Mine was installed incorrectly also. Hadn't seen this mentioned anywhere else.

When I finally removed the roof of the tower to actually get a look it was a great moment.

I would give your balls a good inspection. Depending upon how many shots you took, they could be in bad shape from hitting those habitrails like that.

Was watching the movie with our kids last night and thought this animation from the Mr. DNA sequence would have been pretty cool as a 2nd alternative match animation at the end of a game. Instead of a mosquito in the amber, it could be the match number. Even would work with the existing match music.

anyone have an issue with the auto-plunge not making the reverse ramp? I've tried upping the power, but sometimes it feels like the ball is snagging on something right after the ramp and popping back down.. happens so fast its hard to tell what the cause is..

Mine misses about one out of five times. Not sure why it is. I think it's just a flawed design.

Quoted from seenev:

This seemed to be a common issue - to resolve
1. Often you need to raise the left fork at the entrance of the reverse ramp by placing 1 or 2 small washers under fork. The reason is that the ball gets sideways movement and loses momentum hitting the side walls of the ramp such that it doesn't make it up onto the wireform. This post from Flipstream shows the washers https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/jurassic-park-stern-2019-owners-club-welcome-to-jurassic-park/page/81#post-5484171
2. The second thing to check is the plunger alignment. If you can successfully manually plunge the ball but it fails with the auto-plunger than it is most likely that the 2 strike arms of the auto-plunger aren't both touching the ball causing the ball to have sideways movement and not enough momentum to get up the ramp. @prodoshi did a great post a few days ago showing this issue and how to adjust the auto-plunger https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/jurassic-park-stern-2019-owners-club-welcome-to-jurassic-park/page/120#post-5758762
3. If you are having an issue with the manual plunger make sure you have an orange spring on the plunger and not a green one (which was shipped with the early machines) and similar to point 2 you can see issues manually plunging if your plunger isn't hitting the centre of the ball.

I love it, it's fun to play, probably my favorite theme, and fits well into my collection. I've struggled trying to accel/improve with this game, so tried just about everything, and I've played a lot (3-4 hours at a time). Started per the instructions at 6.5 degree playfield angle, went to 7 degrees, as that was the general consensus here (made the control room and helicopter shots easier, but increased the SDTM and high speed sling to out-lane drains), and then dropped back to 6.8 (another recommendation here), and it works best for me (I think!) But I just can't figure out how to improve, and I brick so many damn shots. My high score is in the neighborhood of 600M, and I can get a few hundred million and 3-4 paddocks (past the T-rex a couple times) in most games, but my big games all come from keeping multi-balls alive, which is quite the challenge (and fun) with 5-6 out there! I usually try to work quickly on the CHAOS, T-Rex is an easy one, and Raptor usually comes from Smart Missile or later in the game. Play the control room modes as they become available and when I have the ball cradled on the right flipper. But the only consistent "flow" in this game for me are really fast drains, usually in the out lanes, propelled my the slingshots (like watching the slingshots play a separate game when they get going), and it's not a very friendly nudge out-lane post. I just can't improve it seems. All of my other games, the more I play, the better I get, doesn't seem so with this game. Maybe I'm missing something?

Wow great custom paint job, really works well with the Prem artwork - what are the costs of doing this sort of work in Europe?
