Yes, the cardboard/board/whatever that holds the lights behind the translate has hinges on the left and the latch on the right, swings open, and gets in the way if you're working back there on boards. It can be easily removed with a few screws at the hinges and simple disconnection of the wires. It's a pain trying to reach anything back there between machine and around that board, so when we were working on boards on my JP, we just took it off temporarily. Good luck!

If it's not opening far enough, look at the light bulb on the far lower left of the front. It's probably hitting the inside of the head. If you pull that bulb, it'll open further.
