What are the best jurassic park mods?
What would you consider the top "must-haves" that really improve the gaming experience?
Quoted from Bugsy:Don’t forget a ColorDMD
How much is a color dmd?
For that matter, what does the pinsound cost?
There are so many mods. That is why i am trying to figure out what's worth it and what's not. I dont really want to double the cost of the machine with mods, but i would like it to be as nice as possible.
Below is a list of mods I have been suggested (both on here and a couple from JP owners i know):
Art blades
ChadH code
Rubbers, posts, flipper upgrades
Pinsound board
Color dmd
Opening gate
T-rex update
Loop combo scoop
Jeep
Dino skulls
Goat
Updated dinos and palm trees
East dock sign
Raptor in cage
If there are any other recommendations, please share. I have never even heard of some of these.
I appreciate everyone's mod suggestions. (If there are more, keep em comin')
I am planning on getting new apron cards too. What/where are the best ones found? Suggestions? I saw a "newman" one with the guy off Seinfeld. That was cool.
Quoted from jorro:Have you got a picture of this?
After multiple misses on deals/sellers changing their minds/sellers skipping me for more money...and even one scam deal............after ALL that...I am finally...
FINALLY...
...officially a Jurassic Pinball owner and member of the club!
Quoted from Chitownpinball:Whats up with your sling plastics? Are those from the lost world pin?
Yeah. I just got this pin, and the guy I got it from kept it working, but not much else. Wrong plastics, missing pteradons, a bent key, etc.
I have a lot of improvements that need to be done.
Quoted from Daditude:Embrace the Newman![quoted image]
Quoted from Daditude:Yeah. I just got this pin, and the guy I got it from kept it working, but not much else. Wrong plastics, missing pteradons, a bent key, etc.

For anyone ready for a MOD EXPLOSION...get ready. This JP was bone-stock with half or more of the lights out, wrong bulbs, no apron cards, dirty as can be, worn rubbers of various colors, etc.
I am in the process of ordering items and getting it tricked out. LEDs, topper, new pop bumpers, chad h code, working gate and raptor mods, tons of ectra lighting, all new black rubbers, etc. I will try to keep it pisted in this thread.
Quoted from dnaman:Doesn't it just pain you to see pins which are left for dead? I don't get it myself, when there are no end to the loving homes that they can go to.
I have improved every pin i have ever owned. Cleaning, shopping, modding, and so on. I leave them better than i get them in.
I have wanted JP for a long time, and it def needs TLC, so I will go "ham" on it!
I have already spent a ton on it.
Here are the items I have ordered for mods/improvements so far:
JP:
Full LEDs from Comet, a changeup of backup incandescent lights, reserve mixture of color LEDs, light bulb covers (in different colors), black rubbers, dino decals, start button, pteradons, keychain, replacement key, flipper rubbers, east dock sign, led strips, t-rex led light, loop scoop lights, moving gate mod, moving raptor in cage mod, sling plastics, chad h code, TRex topper, spotlight reflectors, touch up paint, papo trees, apron cards, apron card holders, pop bumpers, new pinballs, target decals.
I haven't decided, but I may also get more dinos and trees, the dino egg mod, side blades, and/or the goat mod. I will see how much room I have.
Quoted from Pinphila:What did you use for scoop lights?
I am in the process of shopping mine now. It was a nasty beast but luckily under all that dirt, she was very clean.

You are awesome! Thank you.
Quoted from dnaman:Daditude, looks like you're doing it up right! I need to get my a$s in gear and bring mine back to life. Does anyone know if the gate mod will be offered for a long while yet? I realize that some mods are limited runs but the were a ton of JP produced.
Tim makes them 10 at a time. I spoke to him on the phone yesterday, and he is in the process of making 10 right now...including mine!
I would recommend calling or emailing him though. Im not sure how many are spoken for already.
I have started a JP mod thread with my machine (for anyone interested).
Here is the link:
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/welcome-tojurassic-park-a-dinomite-mod
I wrote a couple of blurbs and have some pics, but it is an evolving project, obviously.
In it, I make the assertion that jurassic park would likely be a top 5-10 pinball if just a few changes were made. One of the top changes is the gate. It is small and cheap looking. The modded one DRASTICALLY improves the look of the pin.
Quoted from winteriscoming:Not sure I would personally do it, but any considerations for making available the files for those with 3D printers? Maybe set up a patreon page where people cab donate to get access?
Also, perhaps someone like mezelmods would manufacture them and give you a cut? If you've got a proven product, there's probably a path forward where you can still earn from it, and make it available, even if you don't want to be directly involved in production.
Yes. Please do this.
Quoted from Nds777:Just picked up 1 each of all his mods but bummed I missed out on the smart scoops...
I think I bought every single one of his mods
Quoted from Bugsy:Those are just the standard orange sling plastics. I did order the blue ones though, I think they look better with all the other plastics.
Agreed. Blue are the best.
Quoted from Davi:They don't want to ship to US. Don't know why.
You can register a German parcel forwarding (mailboxde.com), or someone in Europe (like me) can order it, then forward it to you.
I had a fellow pinsider contact me about them. I will see what happens there first, but i may give you a holler later.
Thank you
Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:3 questions for you guys from a new owner:
1. How does the ramp diverter work? Is it supposed to be random or half one way and half another? It was feeding the ball to the right before I moved it and now seems to go mostly left after moving it. I'll take another look but any tips would be appreciated.
2. How does the menu work on this thing. The system is not self explanatory like it is on the 4 button Stern/Bally/Williams systems.
3. Is it possible to turn the sound off on the attract mode in this? I have the 6.0 code.
I know there have been a lot of questions on bulb types on this machine with no direct answer. I ordered 100 frosted natural white bullet, 100 frosted natural white wedge, and 25 natural white flasher bullets. I know this is way too many for the machine, but I'm hoping to have enough left over for the next machine to (fingers crossed Pinbot when one shows on the marketplace). In any case, I'll try and get an accurate count of what the final numbers are. I'm not trying to color match the LEDs.
I just did LEDs on my Jurassic Park (JP). I have a thread that chronicles it along with the many mods I am doing to it if you want to check it out.
Here is the LED list:
Jurassic park uses 5 separate bulbs.
#44/47 6.3v bayonet bottom
#555 6.3v wedge bottom
#455 6.3v slow blinking bayonet bottom
#89 13v flasher with bayonet bottom
#906 13v flasher with wedge bottom
Top of the backbox head (all originally clear white):
2 #89 13v flasher bulbs with bayonet bottom and 3 #44/47 6.3v bulbs
Inside the backbox (all originally clear white):
3 #89 13v flasher bulbs with bayonet bottom, 28 #44/47 6.3v bulbs
5 #455 6.3v slow blinking bayonet bottom
(Note: many people just use warm white in the backbox and skip several lights because it tends to be FAR too bright otherwise. Colors don't seem to work too well in the backbox either)
Playfield (various colors):
9 #906 bulbs (3 white, 3 yellow, 3 red)
18 #89 bulbs (15 white, 2 red, 1 yellow)
9 #555 bulbs (3 white under yellow pop bumpers, 6 clear white above scoops...3 have green bulb covers, 2 have yellow bulb covers, 1 has a blue bulb cover) Note: (mine had several added 555 bulbs under the PF by a previous owner bringing it to around 25. Check this first in your own machine)
72 #44/47 bulbs ( 20 red, 8 yellow, 9 blue, 2 orange, 7 green, 26 white)
There are also 3 #44/47 bulbs in the coin foor and 1 #44/47 behind the start button. All are originally white, but could be converted to red if so desired
Quoted from Geteos:Just picked up a JP this afternoon from an estate sale for 3500cdn. This is my first pinball machine so I wasn’t too sure what to look for. It’s been HUO for at least 10 years as the owner told me it was in the house when they bought it. It seems to be all original and played fine albeit the angle was very flat so the machine played very slow. This thing is sooo heavy! Glad I had 2 people with me to help lift it up the 10 stairs to get it to the car. Are there any maintenance items I should be looking for and replacing?
Check the t-rex for proper movement (it runs diagnostics at boot). Check the scoops for damage, and check the gun for cracks/breaks.
Go to IPDB and check pic for pic if you want to go through it in its entirety.
Quoted from djreddog:This ended up being a bad switch. Replaced and all is well.
Nice!
Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:I made a mistake. I LED'd my machine and it looks fabulous, but I got the wrong type of bulbs for the flashers. They work, but they are 8 SMD flashers and it's like looking at a camera flash every time they go off. They are seizure inducing. I replaced most of them with the original bulbs. What type of flashers do you recommend putting in this game?
Also, I'm thinking about putting in a Jeep Mod. Do you know if there is a version that will interact with the flashers?
Put in a raptor figure above the kickback and am waiting on my loop combo mod (comes with the machine).
Really loving the game so far.
Buy the cheapest flashers from comet pinball. It helps to have color ones as well (not as bright).
Jeep:

Quoted from Chitownpinball:PPSSSHHH try moving a WOZ.
Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:Jurassic Park is heavier.
Try moving a Haunted House. 3 playfields! Super heavy...and I've owned 2!
Quoted from Chitownpinball:WOZ is 310lb. Is there an official measurement on JP? I honestly can say I had no issues moving my JP in the past, but WOZ kicked my ass.
This site says JP only weighs 250....

How about HH?
Quoted from SantaEatsCheese:I am going to respectfully disagree.
I just dropped by Target and picked up a Jurassic Park Jeep. I spent the last 2 hours drilling out the headlights, putting in transparent plastic, rewiring the flashers through it, and getting it all working again. The results... are borderline passable but not nearly as nice as what is on the Modfather's website. I'm going to just order the jeep through him and pass this one to the kids. However... I do think I'm going to go with the kiddie action figure dolls for extra dinosaurs on my machine. I think they are at about the same scale as the T-REX
[quoted image][quoted image]
Check out the papo dinosaurs first. They are generally considered the best.
Quoted from DropTarget:I have a set of cliffys if needed
He definitely should go for it. There is a long wait on cliffys now.
Quoted from koops:He just shipped an order I put at the start of December (tspp kit).
Check your local parts distributors they may already have some in stock, otherwise just put in an order and wait.
Luckily for me, i just got mine.
Quoted from TommyNYC:I was able to also fix the left flipper now it is resting at the same level as the right.
When shot the ball it originally was not going through the T-Bar gate into the poppers. i slight bend to the end of the firing ramp has fixed that too. going into the poppers. looks like any other fixes i need to do will be purely cosmetic at this point thankfully.
The only other thing i am curios about is if i got a fair deal?
Whats the going rate for this Pin these days?
As someone who has just bought one myself and helped "broker" a deal for a friend for one as well, I can tell you they typically go for 3-4k. Anything working below 3,000 is a steal. I would consider 3,500 to be about average. The better the condition, the more value added of course. As mentioned before...LEDs, colordmd, upgraded gate, topper, cliffys, etc add some value as well. I have seen really nice examples going for 5k.
I think people have only recently really discovered what a truly great game this is, and the rising prices have directly reflected that.
Quoted from TommyNYC:The guy originally wanted $3,700. I took a snapshot pf Pinside average value of $2,700 and offered him that.
He said no right away and i told him that if he changed hi mind down the road let me know. He hit me back at $2,800, i accepted and picked it up the following Saturday. Based on some of the comments you guys made I at least feel like i made an ok deal then.
I also ordered and paid for Cliffys, a full new rubber set, the Novus cleaning kit and 6 brand new pinballs.
I almost ordered the Ceramic White ball from Marcos but $50 seemed steep to get that "Egg" look.
If you guys know of a cheaper Ceramic white egg to be found let me know.
thanks!
The cheapest i could find the ceramic ball was on ebay for 29.99....which i still think is too high, but i bought it anyway. It looks great. It was a much bigger improvement than i thought it would be.
Quoted from Pinash:In our area average examples go for about $2800.
I have noticed that the NE area has an over supply of pins compared to the south. Where i live, pinballs sell quick and high.
I bet there have been 2 dozen pins in the NE area listed this month that would have gone for hundreds more and sold instantly if they were in my area.
Quoted from edward472:Anyone know where I can get a replacement smart missile button plastic? Mine is cracked pretty much all the way across, and I don't think its gonna take the abuse my wife's family is going to put on it when they find out I have a pinball machine.
ebay.com link: Data East Jurassic Park Pinball Machine Smart Missile Button 515 5825 00 New
I dont think they sell the plastic by itself. I looked for a start button a while back, and i had to buy the whole assembly...but there it is.
Quoted from TommyNYC:LOL thats the first time in history anyone has ever told me anything in the NE is cheaper than the south.
I will take this as a win for once.
Meanwhile NY State might just Tax me enough to come move down by you eventually
Come on down! We say people here are either Texas by birth or by choice.
Quoted from winteriscoming:Is that some kind of premium glass? At my local show there's a guy who sells them for $25 each or 4 for $100. At least it was that way a couple years ago.
I keep telling people...jk glass is just a few minutes away from TPF and they sell high quality tempered pinball glass all day long for 29.99 a sheet and lower in bulk.
Quoted from Chitownpinball:DING DING! Its freaking dope too. He does really nice work. Very impressed.
Sadly, I cant get it in the game until either Monday or that following weekend because of an out of town wedding.
Heres some more packaging porn and such since you guessed so fast. Too smart...
Cant wait to try it out. Thanks again davi !!!
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
You should definitely check all around the box. There could still be a pony.
Quoted from Davi:Price is $70 plus shipping. I have 4 slots left from batch 2 (most probably the last batch).
What is the mod?
Quoted from PantherCityPins:Has anyone got a link to a list of the bulb types and number of bulbs to do an LED conversion for JP?
I have a full list on my jurassic park mod thread (including types, numbers, colors, and options), and i believe i put it somewhere in this mod thread too.
Quoted from TommyNYC:Hey Guys
Would there be any reason that wedge leds that i bought to go on the playfield will not work in the sockets but traditional wedge bulbs do?
The lights themselves are fine.
Is this some type of power issue ?
I thought leds use less power ??
Thanks !
Turn the lights 180 degrees around and re-insert.
Also, the metal wires sometimes to make good connections. Push them way out to the sides and re-insert.
If you have any questions, you can pm me or i have found ryan wanger (fellow pinsider and owner of comet pinball) to be incredibly helpful
Quoted from TommyNYC:Ps i wish i could buy everyone a beer in this JP club.
This really makes ownership of this game that much better !
I like IPAs and porters. PM for my address
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:Thinking about adding the two Pteranodons to my game (missing them). I found the birds, but can anyone tell me what diameter of piano/music wire I should use to mount them?
Use memory wire. It can be found at walmart, hobby lobby, michaels, etc.
I believe it just comes in a standard size.
Quoted from Davi:Special request - power supply box[quoted image]
Ooooooo! Thats cool!
Quoted from cologneled:Nice Club! I want to join this.. What is process?
Ship me a jurassic park pinball
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:Just had my best game since I've owned the pin for a couple of months - 812K (5 ball, ROM v6.0). I made it all the way through shutdown, but I missed so many opportunities along the way. After playing JP over the past several weeks now, what keeps my attention are the mini-games within the game. You can make it all the way through the CRTs, but still not score well if you don't fulfill the challenges along the way.
I hope you mean 812M, not 812K....right? Lol
Quoted from Chitownpinball:Considering selling my JP. PM me if you would be interested in the trex mod. It was $400 new and its still $400. No price increase although I bet I could get $500....
Any ways, let me know. Not in a rush.
Wow! What pin are you planning on getting to replace it?
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:I just wanted to give a shout-out to Comet Pinball https://www.cometpinball.com for their great customer service. I know there are other good LED suppliers, but IMO Comet is the best. Not only do they have great products, but their support is exemplary. Having been in service oriented industries for most of my career, my perspective in business is that things will go wrong. What differentiates the bad from the good and the good from the great, is how they treat their customers and how they address issues when they arise. Comet has always communicated well, takes a customer focused approach to business, and continues to offer great and innovative products.
Comet is and will continue to be my sole source for all things pinball lighting, and I encourage everyone who can use their products to give them a try.
I have to agree.
I recently did several LED conversions, and I experimented with suppliers of all types. I tried every major LED supplier (and some not-so-major suppliers as well) for varios colors, flashers, variances of white LEDs, LED strips, etc. Comet pinball stood head and shoulders above the rest.
When I factor quality, price, and customer service...Comet was above all others.
They are my go-to LED company.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:Funny, my suggestions were: "DE Jurassic Park Club" or "DE Jurassic Park (1993) Club"
Just received some JP decals/goodies from Mr_Tantrum
They are great. Super fast shipping too. Thank you!!
I highly recommend checking his stuff out for your own machine.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:I'm starting work on developing a 3D printed version of just the teeth to use with OEM T-Rex. Not sure when I will be ready to share (need a lot of trial & error testing).
I will beta test it
Quoted from delt31:well just finished my LED conversion for my JP (all comet LEDs - they're the best for lighting). Also - I put a giant LED strip in the back to light up that backboard plastic and banner - thought it came out well as I can now see it!
All that is left is to add is loop combo for the scoops which are in the mail (desperately need those) and mirrors. This is a very nice example of JP and there are stapled pieces of paper covering the area that I need to access to unluck those lug nuts. Pretty cool. Must have come that way from factory. See attached.
[quoted image][quoted image][quoted image][quoted image]
Could you tell us what LED strip you used(voltage and maker) and where you attached it to (GI?)
Quoted from jurassicpark93:Avec plaisir
Yeah I wish I bought my appartment 10 years ago.. It is the only reason i waited so long to buy it
By the way, I forgot to mension about the Topper, It is a 100 euros more item if you want your JP to be complete. But no worries, there are very good reproductions on the market.
I made my own topper with papo dinos:
20200130_101648 (resized).jpgQuoted from Chitownpinball:That wallpaper border brings back some memories of my old basement. It does not come off easily.
It was like that when I moved in. I keep meaning to take it down and re-paint...but a jam-packed gameroom has slowed my desire to do so.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:Those do look nice. My cost comment was made with no particular offering in mind as I hadn't even really searched for what is already out there (I just know from others I bought in the past). I already had the red lights, and from experience on my Getaway having different colors and fade modes available from another vendor's LED speaker mod, personally I found that I prefer them to always be the same color and set at a constant low brightness.
Good info to have. Thank you
Quoted from Xjship:So I am the market for my first pinball, and have always wanted Jurassic Park as it was my favorite movie as a young kid.
I really want to like this game, but am finding it to be pretty difficult and not that fun. There's a local arcade where I've played it regulary. I put $20 in the machine yesterday and I think my highest score was 165M. Never hit Chaos, and only got Tri-balls and jackpots rarely. I know the strategy at least at a high level too. I keep playing, waiting for it to grow on me, and it isn't happening. The other pins there, like Pirates of the Car., Star Trek, or Medieval Madness are much more enjoyable. There's also a Star Wars DE there, and I liked it at first but that game is almost too easy (repeat shots) and I have no trouble getting replays on it.
I noted that the table had the Cliffy scoop protectors and made that makes them harder to hit? No other mods or board issues that I could tell. Also, I feel like I was getting drains constantly, to the point where it was laughable how easy they'd drain.
Don't know if I have a question, just sharing my frustration. I am OK paying $3k+ for a game, but I want to like it. I guess I'll try to play a different JP somewhere else so I can give it a fair chance.
Where are you located?
Quoted from jamex:Hi, which mods are still in production and sale for our JP data east? Thanks
Too many to name, but you can look here on pinside, mezel mods, modfather, cointaker, etc

Me. tantrum gas amazing mods! I have several. His work is awesome.
Quoted from shirkle:Picked up my JP today. I will need help with a couple really obvious issues-
1. Raptor Kicker isn’t working.
2. Super VUK just started smoking and us obviously locked on.
3. In coil test, Q31 lit up and started smoking....maybe related to #2.
I’ll add more to this list as I find them.
Any pics?

Quoted from bossk4hire:Can't afford a fancy topper yet so came up with a fun cheap one hahahha.

Jurassic park tops the box office. You read that right...the ORIGINAL 1993 Jurassic Park.
Quoted from scootss:Long shot, but does anyone have a lead on these sideblades (or maybe an extra set they can sell)? To me, these are the blades that best match the color and style of the playfield.

Quoted from Alan_L:I'm looking at a DE JP where the Dino head goes side to side and up and down but the jaw doesn't close. Any thoughts?
TIA,
Al
It could be the motor (expensive), or it could just be a screw needs to be tightened. Either way, I would certainly offer much less.
I am considering selling my DE Jurassic Park. It has just about every possible mod you could find (color dmd, tims moving gate, tims moving raptor, trees, opening lit barbasol can, custom dinos, custom dino box, east dock sign, pop bumper caps, custom captive ball, rottendog board, new roms, titan rubbers, comet LEDs, custom painted dinos, custom apron cards, yoyokopter scoops, loop scoop combo, manual, nvram, custom key fob, coin door decals, custom coin inserts, and more)
Pm me if interested
I have listed my JP. It has over $2000 in mods. If anyone is interested, make an offer for some of the mods or the pin without mods...or just getting a pin modded to the hilt.
Here are some pics of just a few of the mods I am selling:

Hard to see it. If so, I’ll take it depending on price.
Yes, the raptor crate is sold. I do still have the Tim's electronic gate mod, however.
Quoted from edward472:I haven't seen those 3D printed scoop models in a while. I totally forgot about them
Yeah, those are from yoyokopter. They are the very best JP scoop mod ever made. They look incredible!

Why are you selling the game? Getting a stern?
I already have the Stern JP but I was selling this to create funds for a grail game. It is very bitter sweet. I would have love to have kept It.
The gate, art blades, and the yoyo Kopter scoops have all sold.
Quoted from evileye:Totally get it. And modern Stern’s are certainly different. With that said, have you thought about their version of Jurassic Park? I’ve not had the chance to play it yet, but it keeps you in the same theme.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:I have played a couple of games on an Stern JP LE, and I did like it. While I've not come to any decision at all yet (never one to count chickens before they hatch), the Stern JP will be on the short list for sure.
I recently sold my DE JP, and it was one of the toughest pins I've ever had to let go of. Owning a Stern JP made it easier, however. It's a great game.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:Sale is pending, thank you to everyone who expressed interest.
Kind of funny in that I've had 2 JP mod orders since I put the pin online yesterday. Just to reassure the community, I don't plan on going anywhere and will still be offering all of my DE JP mods in the future (see partial items in Pinside classifieds or PM me for a full list).
What are you going to get to replace it?
Quoted from DaveTheTrain:Hey guys, i know you may be biased but I'm about to hopefully pull the trigger on one of these.
I love JP and this pin has been on my wishlist for a while.
I was looking up reviews and a lot or people describe it as 'clunky'. What do they mean by that?
I'm a new pin owner and currently have Road Show (my grail pin) and Black Rose, (also borrowing a Capcom pinball magic)
So wondering how Jp will fit in considering my current pin experience?
How does it compare to Road Show and Black Rose with regards to rules?
They are saying it is clunky because of the scoop shots which interrupts its' "flow." I actually really like it and don't consider it an issue at all.
It should go along great with your collection.
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:Well, it was bittersweet watching my JP drive away with its new owner, but I'm officially out of the club. The pin is going to a great home of a true pinball lover that appreciates the game, so while I'll miss the pin it is going to get lots of love and play.
I'll still check in occasionally, and I still will make mods for this title (http://thezumwaltfamily.com/pinball/JP) along with a multitude of other games, so if you see anything your interested in ordering then shoot me a PM anytime.
Thank you to everyone in this great forum over the last couple of years for your great advice, pin knowledge, creative mods, and general comradery. This is the first time I've ever sold a pin (up to this point I've only bought them), so I'm dealing with a little separation anxiety. The next step is for me to decide what to fill the void with (I'm wanting a newer Stern game), so hopefully that will be soon.

What have you narrowed it down to on the new pin?
Quoted from Mr_Tantrum:A modern Stern. I’m down to 3 (JP, SW, GOTG), and believe or not JP is topping the list for me right now.
I thank JP is by FAR the best of those 3. I mentioned it before, but me getting the new stern JP made it easier to sell my DE JP.
Feel free to come over and play mine if you want to check it out.
