So....for the first time in a decade, I have a pin back in the house. We picked up an excellent condition jungle queen for a good price. I didn't even notice an issue until my daughter was playing it. I was in a different room and it popped into my head....there are no chime noises. The last machine we had didn't work well and we just dealt with it. Now, I am wanting to learn to repair my own machines so they stay in good shape....any ideas on the chimes? There is a black wire in the general vacinity of the chimes that isn't connected to anything, but I don't see anywhere to connect it to. Are there any easy things to check first (fuse, etc.)? Pics help as I am still learning the names of the parts. Thanks!

Pictures of the chime box would help. Could be a few things. It's not a fuse that's almost certain.

Chimes typically have a Jones plug on the end that plugs into the bottom board. If it's plugged in, sometimes if the game hasn't been played in a while, the plungers get stuck to the rubber foam at the bottom of the chime unit. Just some things to check.

Sounds like the wire came off one of the chime unit solenoids. The rest are usually daisy chained together. As the prior poster said, post a picture and it will make it much easier to diagnose.

Finally got a chance to get a picture. The plungers are not stuck. The black wire with the gold tip in the foreground isn't attached to anything....what other pics would be helpful?

The black wire connects to one of the lugs with a blue wire on it. Someone pulled that off to turn the chimes off.

So do i just pick one and re attach it? I am thinking the closest one is my best bet? Will try it in the morning. Thanks!

It doesn't matter which one you pick because they're all tied together. I suppose whichever one the wire reaches easily would be the best one to use.

It works! Yay! She sounds lovely (much louder....but lovely)! Thanks so much! As this is my first machine i expect i will be back with questions. If is want to disconnect the round thing in the door that buzzes, do i cut the black wire, the white pair, or both?

The round thingy i am referring to is the thing wrapped in copper wire....

That's the coin lock-out coil. They do buzz on most games. I disconnect them as well. Just cut the single black wire. Then wrap the end of the wire with a little electrical tape because there will be voltage present on the metal wire at the end. You may want to zip tie it to the white wires otherwise it wants to flop all over when you open the coin door.

That device is the coin-door lockout coil. It was designed so that in the event that someone deposited a coin when the game was powered off, the coin would be routed to the coin return slot instead of to the operators coin box inside the cabinet. That coil is on as long as the machine is powered on. When the coil is on, it pulls in and moves the thin rod which changes the coin path over to the coin box, instead of to the return slot.

One can usually alleviate the buzz by fiddling with the coil armature or the thin rod.

However, some owners will disable this device if they are not planning to use the game in a coin-op mode. The white wire is probably the power wire while the black is the ground. If you remove either one, try to detach it right at the coil terminal so that some subsequent owner could easily restore function if the desired.

Congrats on your first repair.

Study-up for the next one! Do you get pinballninja's videos? Well worth the donation and plenty of good EM repair videos. By the same guy that hosts/wrote the EM repair guide (http://www.pinrepair.com/begin/index.htm, http://www.pinrepair.com/em/index.htm).

I have been on that page several times and can not figure out HOW to purchase the videos...there is not a buy it now button.

If it's sounding too "clunky" you could take the box out and take apart to replace the foam strip...those disintegrate after a few decades and then you get metal on metal sound. It's an easy repair as well.

Foam strip looks great! The chimes do not sound clunky at all....thanks!
