Working on gotlieb jungle. Don't know what to call this part, but it moves freely then jams up. When I fiddle with it. It will move for a few seconds then jam up again. I loosened the screw and raised center part up a little. It helped but still jams up and I can't see what's catching.

Also nothing lights up. I haven't attached head yet. Just did basic clean up. Does head need to be on for lights to work? Yes, I'm new at this. Repairing.

Yes, you'll need to completely assemble the machine before you start to troubleshoot any mechanical problems. Place the power cord in the pedestal notch first, then attach the backbox and connect the Jones plugs in the backbox. Power on the machine. There should be lights on in the backglass and the coin door. Playfield lights would be off. You can manually turn the credit wheel so it will show one or more credits through the credit window. With the game ball in the outhole, push the credit/start button on the coin door... Then tell us what happens...

What part are you referring to-the score motor? Round, silver, surrounded by switches?

yes, upper and lower part of wheel. with notches. First thing to come on when you plug it in. 2 man lift on backbox, so waiting on neighbor to come help me assemble.

The motor driven cams will rotate one third of a revolution counter-clockwise when you nudge it. This is normal.

I can see one problem already from the photo. The motor controlled switch to the far right at three o'clock is badly bent out of adjustment. You have to straighten it in such a way that it will make and break contact as the motor cams rotate to open and close all the switches in that group.

yes, I saw it was bent and straightened it best i could.
I was able to rotate cam freely until it locked up. some jiggling and pushing got it moving freely again, then it locks up. When you plug it in, it works for a second, then jams and makes angry buzzing sound as I'm sure gears are grinding. Once I get head on and plug in I will repost whats happening. If it continues to jam, I have to loosen screw holding camshaft in and take it out so see whats going on. Bt it seems when I touch something I can never get it back to factory perfect.

Ok head is attached. Once plugged in no playfield lights or movement. No registering credits. Backbox lights up except upper right. Tilt light is on. Besides lighting up backhoe nothing works. Cam is able to rotate. Just not doing it.

Check the obvious first. Fuses all good? "Tilt" coming on at power up is normal. The motor will move until it homes. As I said, it normally only moves 1/3 of a revolution. You won't have playfield lights when it's in tilt mode. Try manually disengaging the tilt relay, but be careful working on a game that's live. If the tilt relay wants to stay energized, you likely have a slam or tilt switch that's not in it's normal state. Do you have a schematic?

If the Replay button (on front door) doesn't do anything, diagnose this circuit with Alligator clip jumper wires.

I have schemeatic. will start checking fuses. I normally always turn off and unplug when working on machines. Got wire brush and will start cleaning some heads. Thanks for the help jrpinball.

You can also try a forced start by pushing in the S relay to see if the machine would start the reset process...
