just got a jd. dont know the rules 100%.
multiball:
first 2 ball locks, the ball in play sails around the left ramp and virtual locks twice.
3rd ball lock is actually locked... gets grabbed by the crane and it moves over and releases that ball for multiball. and the trough shoots out 4 more balls.
so 5 balls in play.
is this normal?
rom version L-6

From the rule sheet (http://www.ipdb.org/rulesheets/1322/judgedre.htm):

"Because of the Deadworld changes, release ROMs do the locking differently. Now, 'locks' 1 and 2 just sail around the the ramp. The 3rd ball will indeed be diverted to the Deadworld, and if the Claw can't get the ball out, it falls onto the playfield rather ungracefully. After starting Multiball with the 3rd shot, 3 more balls are autoplunged into play."

That makes 4 total, though the same number happens with the Deadworld mod. If you are getting 5 balls, you have an opto problem.

every thing else works fine except the 5 balls for multiball. where could an opto problem be? in the trough? the blackout mode works with 2 balls fine.

Yes, trough most likely. Testing methods in this thread.

i tested trough and everything is fine. no credit dots either indicating any switch issues.

no other issues anywhere in the game. im just gonna have to believe this rom version gives a 5 ball multiball for normal mball.
the blackout gives 2 as its supposed to and the wizard mode gives 6 as its supposed to.

Is it set to non-US location?

FWIW my Euro import JD, and all the ones I've played here in NZ that weren't running the Deadworld mod all had 6 ball multiballs all the time. Maybe different regions and/or ROMS differ.
