Recently replaced the 34 pin ribbon cable on my judge Dredd because of display issues ( had swapped out with another game and this was the problem) installed the new cable and turned on with the game not booting, checked cable connections and reseated games comes on and blows fuses 104/105 the all gi stays on and deadworld constantly cycles.. I’ve checked all connections and everything is secure , but the only thing that was disconnected/reconnected was the ribbon cable,, did something get shorted on during the connection process? I’m stumped!!

Sure it’s not seated off by one pin at one of the connectors?

Tried the cable from other game again to verify new cable isn’t bad?

Best to unplug that ribbon cable at each board to be sure it is plugged in correctly, not one row off, just as PNBLWZD says.

#4 3 years ago

I did that, tried different cable too... the first cable is new, was wondering if I had plugged in wrong the first time and it would have possible shorted something on? Even with cable completely unplugged now it does the same thing

Unplug each board from cpu then connect one at a time and see which one causes the problem

Are you sure only F104 and F105 are the only ones blown? Sure that F112 on the top right area of the driver board is not blown as well?

Which red LEDs are lit on the driver board?

#7 3 years ago

F112 is not blown, and it looks like led 1 and led 6 are not lit, ..
Was the 4 connector 34 pin ribbon cable was the only thing that was removed and replaced, if that was connected wrong, would it have messed up the cpu or the driver board or caused transistors to short on?

I had something similar happen to me when the 50V circuit blew the fuse at F112 because of a melted coil, I could barely tell it was blown though and the motor in my T2 was constantly rotating.

I did something similar on my ST:TNG and it was a beast to fix. I took out the CPU board to fix another machine, and when I reinstalled I plugged one of the ribbon cables in backwards which fried a bunch of stuff. I would recommend the following.

1. If you have a photo of the open backbox before your switch, make sure everything is plugged in the exact same way... I did not catch my error until I carefully compared photos looking at bends in the wire. If you don't have a before photo, look at other people's for sale photos until you find a good one.
2. Assuming you do not identify the error in step one, remove every fuse, even the ones you think look good and check with a multimeter, you may find another bad one.
3. Check blinking light logic on CPUs board on page 1-39 of manual... based on your description this will most likely have isseus.
4. If fuse 104/105 are blowing, find the associated circuitry in the manual and unplug the relevant cables on the power driver board. Page 1-39 of the manual says the 104/105 are Solenoids 1-8 and 9-16.
5. Page 2-48 of the manual says the associated backbox plugs for these solenoids are 126, 127, and 130.
6. After you have verified all other fuses are good, try restarting with 126, 127, and 130 unplugged, if the fuses still blow your issue is on the board somewhere.
7. If they don't blow, plug them in one at a time and power cycle to see if they blow, and use page 2-48 of the manual to diagnose relevant parts to check.

Thanks, I will give that a try this wknd!

Looks like you have the ribbon wrong. Check it... it is hard to tell from the picture but it looks like you need to move it one pin to the right looking at it.

Quoted from Karetaker:

Agreed.

When I messed mine up I got in the following loop.

Plugged in ribbon chord backwards. Detected error and fixed in. Plugged in ribbon chord blew a transistor on my Power Driver daughter board (this was ST:TNG). This caused a solenoid to lock on and burn out. Replaced Power Driver daughter board, but shorted solenoid burned out transistor. Then replaced solenoid but shorted transistor burned out transistor...

Thanks guys, Ribbon was wrong and shorted some transistors , got it all fixed up and working again!
Man, Turning 50 put a hurting on my eyesight, didn’t even see the pin being off..
Ribbon cables make me crazy sometimes!
Thank again for everyone’s help
