Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

Large onion, battered and deep fried - basically one LARGE onion ring. Substitute for french fries or chips and fun dish to share. It's good but not so healthy Best dish to share.

Well there you go, no one really eats onion rings here either. In all my trips over there, I've never been to Outback to try it.
Real Australian food that I never managed to find there is meat pies, sausage rolls and related bakery slices and tarts. Plus I always bring my own Vegemite.

Quoted from sd_tom:

made JPOP not return his calls.

Standard M.O. with just about everyone.

Can't believe anyone would think there is potential in working with him again. He is far more than just a failed businessman. We're talking deep character deficiencies.

So for anyone wanting to do a bit more detective work, feel free to apply for any one of the jobs listed at American Pinball Inc.

If he's hiring staff, he must be ready to roll. Also:
Oh look John, this is how you run a company
[Manage, planning & organizing production process, drawing up a production schedule]
[Ensure that the production is cost effective; estimate costs and set the quality standards]

#19205 7 years ago

Maybe this is an elaborate charade to offer the opportunity for JPOP to apply for the "Creative Pinball Game Designer" position and be told he's not qualified.

#19206 7 years ago

So are you saying that I have been duped into thinking I have been drinking a good Australian beer. I always enjoyed Fosters and always pictured myself coming out of the water with my fresh catch of (some yummy big great reef) fish on my spear and ripping my dive mask off and grabbing the huge can comfortably with my still gloved hands.

Oh the dream ruined!!

And JPOP hope the IRS crawls up your bung hole.

That's creepy. Pinball as a business today requires a considerable amount of passion. Its not really financially a good investment. The market is fairly saturated. Most pinball start-ups begin with those roles, because they grow up from passionate people who want to birth something into the world.

Someone also mentioned their plan was to be in Chicago to use the same suppliers. We can already see that Stern's stripping them of almost their entire capacity and creating delays. JJ claims they were unfriendly and not cost effective, so he went his own route. It would seem that separate from JPOP, maybe not the right amount of effort to research and prepare went into that new company.

An empty warehouse, adds for designers, that just all feels like another intentional scam gearing up to look legit. If that company is legit, its going to have to battle that right out of the box, and not realistically something that can be overcome because of JPOP.

Creative Pinball Game Designer

Looking at the requirements for the position, jpoop fails in every way. It says over 50 applicants have applied. Hope they know what they are in for.

#19209 7 years ago

Why would the IRS care about John? He set up a company, took investment and it failed.

He paid himself too much but I'm sure the C Corp subtracted the taxes, SS, Medicare, unemployment etc.

Regarding blooming onions, is it just me or do they overcook them nowadays?

#19210 7 years ago

If he was as good at taxes as he was at running a pinball business they might care. He probably wouldn't return his accountants phone calls either?

#19211 7 years ago
Quoted from jeffspinballpalace:

that might tie with begin programming, but it's definately in the top 5. That might be an interesting topic - Top 5 Things JPOP Did Wrong. I'd need to put my thinking cap on for that, and am sure it will be hard to pare the list.

Most failures share the top 5. This entire thread exposes these shortcomings as they were made clear over time.

1. Complete lack of responsibility & accountability - to paying customers, vendors (or any one, really)
2. Overestimated his ability
3. Misjudged and/or mismanaged /wasted : skills, time, cost, difficulty, critical path, financial projections, goodwill
4. too proud to accept help for list in item #3.
5. Horrible judgment & communication re: what customers wanted, would accept

Walking around that building, with weeds coming up through the asphalt, no cars, a paper sign taped to the window (only put rightside up if they have visitors or interviewees stop by), broken blinds in the windows, and no office furniture --- nobody would be impressed walking into that "company headquarters" for an interview.

Also, perhaps Minority Owned = less than half the workers will get paid.

I don't think a single thing at Outback Steakhouse is Australian.

I used to see those "blooming onions" in New Orleans long before Outback came around, Alice Springs Chicken Quesadillas are clearly from southern Mexico, and I've never seen a **steakhouse** of any kind in Australia.

Any of you Aussies regularly go to a steakhouse, eat fried whole onions, or chicken quesadillas?

All good choices but I would have to add acting dishonestly, deceitful and frudulently. But now we have to strike one off your list. This isn't going to be easy.

Quoted from vid1900:

The boomerangs hanging on the wall come from AU, and if you see a didgeridoo, it is from there too. Can't think of much else. I haven't seen vegemite on their menu yet but wouldn't recommend ordering it anyways. Unless you enjoy eating food that stinks. Yuck!

Do not go to Outback Steakhouse with kids. Dingos will eat your baby.

I don't order them anymore because of that...always overcooking them!

A "steakhouse" down this end of the world is just that. Generally just steaks, maybe a chicken dish, a fish dish, generally with high quality meat. Not a blah generic chain like Outback. And definitely no tacos.

99.9% of meat down here in NZ/Aust is grass fed as opposed to grain fed which gives the meat a much better taste (because, you know, cows live in paddocks and eat grass...)

(I had a great grain fed ribeye at RPM Steak in Chicago last year. I don't mind grain fed, for a change..)

Most times I take my American/euro friends to a NZ steak house they want to go back the next night.

I'm sure like every pinball company there are NDA's that are signed so it would be a waste of time except for that person to have that knowledge to themself.

I don't think he could enforce them..

#19225 7 years ago

I signed an NDA prior to an interview not long ago.

Turns out, I was outright lied to by a COmpaNy Director. I later CONsulted with my attorney asking of I could post what happened on Glass Door. I was advised the NDA was not enforceable.

"As a game designer, you are responsible for designing Pinball game and other amusement game."

That's not even English.

#19229 7 years ago
Quoted from dgarrett:

It was unsaid - but Dhaval and I both knew each other had a lot more knowledge about things than was being said.

This reminds me of a James Bond movie (Roger Moore era) where both Bond and his adversary both know exactly who each other are but are playing along with each other during some encounter at a casino or something .

#19230 7 years ago

So thinking about this new company some more....

Based on those weird job postings, it's like they ARE a completely new pinball start up. And not an "investor" in zidware or John.

Obviously John is involved in some way, because they've even said so, but it could be as a consultant, which is a position he likes (being paid to share his "35 years of pinball blah blah blah").

They are posting these job listings publicly, and have an office, yet are still acting all weird and covert. The people behind it are unknown to the pinball world, which is odd, considering every other pinball startup was a passion project by known people inside of pinball. It sort of has to be, there is no easy money to be made here and is such a high risk business normal investment doesn't apply.

Adding to it is the mystery of what exactly has John been doing this past year+ when everything has failed. He is not bankrupt, his business still exists, outside of the occasional story of "new investors" coming to look at his stuff.

Posting jobs is essentially free.. it doesn't get weird until they actually start hiring people and paying them to do stuff.

Remember... sometimes it can cost you less in the long run to burn a little bit of cash to keep some farce running.

Pinball built in China?

Dear Lord...that's going to make any QC issues at Stern look like child's play.

My air hockey table was built in Texas and my pool table is an Olhaussen from Tennessee...there's a reason they cost twice as much as the Chinese counterparts but with fewer frills. Because both will look and play the same in twenty years rather than be in a landfill.

Chinese pinball...pass.

#19236 7 years ago
Quoted from bounoun:

So the next episode in this whole fiasco. They should make a movie about this.
Who should they cast for JPOP?

Hmm... I'm sure it will be a satire with Benjamin Walker as JPOP in "Abraham Lincoln, Pinball hunter"

I'm pretty sure the King of Diamonds remake was manufactured in China.

By most accounts that project was a failure but I think the games turned out pretty well/reliable.

#19238 7 years ago

We can hope for success, and another manufacturer, even if it is China or India.

Lets face it, so much of the games parts, may currently come from China.
I know they can do the assembly well.

Not knowing what pinball is, and getting a game out bug free...I wish them luck.
That is not easy...

#19239 7 years ago

outback steakhouse is 'Australian themed', the food however has nothing to do with Australia, by any stretch of the imagination.

here is a nice article about an Aussie visiting Outback.

Every cell phone, computer and tablet is built in china. Do you not have any of these things? parts and assembly are fine in China, SO LONG AS YOU HAVE A MANAGER that is keeping an eye on things because they will try to veer away from the design intent every time to save pennies, even if it means compromising quality or function. I imagine it will work out just fine for Homepin, but it's also easier to fly over to china from Australia vs the US.

Quoted from frolic:

If you're referring to the flipped sign, it's not that unusual. There is another pinball type company in the chicago area in a rented office, and if you drove up to it you'd have no idea there was anything pinball related there.

You are 100% correct - I live in China as does one of my Australian electronic engineers FULL TIME and we supervise all things at the factory on a daily basis. Here is a picture from a day or so back assembling pop bumpers. Quality is as good as anything else I have ever seen because we are "on the spot" designing & checking every part and fully supervising assembly. Farming out the work to a random facility would indeed be a nightmare.

Anyone interested in following our progress can see facebook.com/HomepinPinball - I won't distract further in this thread, just wanted to clarify some misconceptions that a few have about "Made in China". It is not "all" bad as some would try and have you believe (typed on a Lenovo laptop - Made in China and owned by Chinese [IBM]).
