Quoted from CrazyLevi:

The "build quality" of System 3s is just another reason I hate them.
Let's take the shittiest playing DMDs anybody ever built, and put them into a completely unnecessary GIGANTIC cabinet that you have to be 15 to be tall enough to play, on steroids to move, and own an 18-wheeler to transport without removing the head.
What the hell was going on over there in the 90s anyway?

Gottlieb's usual issue: resistance to change and failure to adapt.

I'm going out on a limb here, their EM glory days weren't even the best. they happened to just be more reliable than others and have better art. could have been that resistance to change helped them here by not going with the pointy people art that everyone else was in the 60s .

Quoted from CrazyLevi:

Yes that's nice and innovative.
I'm talking about the games I collect - 60s and 70s titles. For the most part they played it safe, and produced the best games.
It's a repeating theme in pinball, even now. Everybody clamors for "innovation" but that's not necessarily what makes the best games.

I've had a good amount of Gottlieb EMs, the amazing art packages make up for some of the not as interesting scoring features. The good thing is that they had a good recipe and stuck to it, that nice sweet spot. Hopefully i'll have my freefall running this weekend....need to get that thing going. It depends how you quantify Best. Bally EMs have more crazy different features, sure, sometimes they created a turd, but there are some great players in that mix. Williams (and Sonic via mechanical extension) had some great layouts and rules....but worse art .
