i have a data east JP with a lamp row problem.

for context, this started after poking around to try to fix a flasher problem (i'll save that for another topic), though it wasn't really in the same part of the wiring.

the problem is that row 2 comes on immediately on power-up, and stays on. but it's dim - it's not bright like when the lamps are actually lit, and certainly not bright like if the transistor was out. so, maybe one-third as bright as normal.

if i go into diagnostics, they all stay on (but dim) all the time in all the row and column lamp tests, though when row 2 is activated, they brighten up to normal, and when the appropriate column for each is activated, that single lamp brightens up to normal.

i've attached two pictures - the first is when they are on but dim (when row 1 is active in the lamp row test); you can see how, for instance, the "H" (or the middle spitter lamp) is dim, much dimmer than the "C". the second is when they are on normally (when row 2 is active in the lamp row test); you can see how much brighter they are.

disconnecting CN6 made them go out, so there's not a short from another part of the wiring.

i've checked all the lamps that have diodes in that row and the diodes test fine.

any ideas on what to do next would be greatly appreciated.

You have a shorted lamp row transistor.
Check the manual to ID the transistor and then use your meter to diode test it.
Compare results to another adjacent transistor.

thanks, Chris, that was it. interestingly that transistor (Q73) had been replaced (poorly) before.

now on to the other light and flasher problems (just a few minor ones at this point).
