Joust Owners Club - ostrich riders and pterodactyl slayers wanted

being a small, but tight knit club, I thought that it would be nice to have a centralized thread where joust owners (current and potential) could discuss all items joust related

#2 6 years ago

to start things off:
as many of you know, jim smith and I were responsible for reproducing the joust playfield plastics approximately 3 years ago. the run was understandably small (the production numbers for joust itself were limited to begin with) and the fact I didn't want to get stuck with any product that I couldn't sell since I funded the project from my own coffers.

CPR was kind enough to come through on the manufacturing end when the local print shop could not deliver the level of (silk screened) quality that we've all come to expect, however it was obvious that I probably could have produced another 5-10 sets given the pm's that I received after selling through the 60 licensed sets that I did produce.

since I still possess the means of bending the aprons (the heat bending unit and my home-made jig), is there any demand to consider producing any more playfield plastics?

#3 6 years ago

I will take a set!

#4 6 years ago

I'm in for two sets.

#5 6 years ago

I’m in for a set. What’s the price?

#6 6 years ago

I'll come play

#7 6 years ago

I'll definitely buy two plastic sets to match the two playfields I've ordered. I could be convinced to buy more if it means making the run happen! I just found my joust in very good player's condition a couple months ago and it's definitely my kids' favorite pin in the collection. I'm pretty sure they'll be disappointed when it goes down for a restore.

Hello Joust folks,

Just letting you all know that Joust plastics will be no problem - in any quantity you need. Whether it be 1 extra, or 100 extra needing to be made. We're going to be taking care of the "re-run" when the Joust reproduction playfields are shipping. I won't steal our coming thunder right now, but I will say that CPR will be changing reproduction in the hobby forever - starting first with plastics & backglasses, and soon after playfields. This summer. We've been building 15 years to this moment. On-demand reproductions (runs or 're-runs' of 1) will be CPR's new thing. Order. Made. Shipped. With turnarounds that will make your head spin. We'll explain everything in detail when the time comes.

As for Joust playfields, after 3 years of CPR collecting the preorders of "everybody Joust" who wanted a new Joust playfield - just a reminder to those Jousters who didn't get the recent emails regarding this run - if you are new and wanting to jump onboard for a playfield - we WILL make a few more for latecomers. It's soon too late, but you have about 2-3 weeks. You just have to stand up and make your 2018 promise with the rest of the guys who already did recently. Use the "CONFIRM" link at our web site on the Preorder Page to send in your information (and quantity desired). Just like the last 3 years of guys did.

That's the latest for Joust here.

Is this a good deal for this game?

No, but the baywarch in the back looks immaculate!!!

#13 6 years ago

A friend on mine owns a Joust. He lives in a small town about 2 hrs north of Toronto. Paid 400.00 a few years ago from some dude that needed quick cash. Talk about a steal.

someone didn't bother to see which joust that I linked above. I'm fully aware that bally made one a decade earlier

playfield plastics update
once kevin gets the [on demand] orders up and running, the sets will be available for purchase on the classicplayfields.com website. CPR will print and laser cut them and then they will be shipped to me to finalize (heat bend the aprons), package up and shipped to the customer(s)

Thanks!

No, this did not come from IN.

It's going to need lots of cleaning, but the pf looked really good from what I could see (but couldn't get the glass off since there was no key)

#21 6 years ago

congrats on the acquisition

btw, there are 3 of those luggage type locking clasps (like on the new stern machines) that hold each of the twp lockdown bars onto the cabinet. you will need to release all 6 of them to slide the playfield glass off

hopefully, the playfield prop bar is still inside the machine

additionally, the 2 panels on the either side of the base have one of those nylon "child-proof" locking mechanisms to keep the panels from crashing down onto the floor when you unlock them. you'll need to reach inside the semi opened panel and push the latch down to release it to open the access doors containing the boards

Awesome info. Thank you j_m_

It will be a little while until I can start on this, as I have a few other projects that need to be finished up first. But I know I'm going to need some insight when I do get to it. And opening it up was the first roadblock.

anyone have insider info on how many commitments CPR has gotten?

Would be nice to know how close this is to becoming a reality. Guessing a few of us may even be willing to commit for a second one just to get this all done.

#25 5 years ago

the last time that I spoke with kevin, they were over 50 commitments (re-commitments) and I was assured that the project would get done

as far as what I know and am allowed to publicly reveal, things are progressing very well

Really appreciate the news and hard work to help so many bring games back to better than new condition!

without going into too much detail, what I can say is that all of the pieces are in place for the finalizing to occur and the playfields to start being produced

#29 5 years ago

Joining the ostrich riders and pterodactyl slayers club. pinballrebel and I are co-owners of a Joust that was saved from a fire pit. It is arriving via STI today and will be restored by Keith Holbrook (amazing pinball restoration artists in Dallas Area).

The CPR news is very exciting. Looking forward to hearing the details soon.

a small change (a correction) was made to the playfield artwork file last night and a new file submitted, so hopefully that is the only roadblock found

No worry, take time and get it right.

#33 5 years ago

Really looking forward to this!

big news for people on the joust pre-order list from CPR is coming (if it already hasn't been sent by kevin). I know that mirco displayed photos of a playfield that looked really nice late yesterday/early this morning, but I think this news is worth viewing before anyone thinking of jumping ship, does

#35 5 years ago

Question is, which is better? Mirco is shipping now, historically is there much if any difference?

#36 5 years ago
Quoted from jake35:

not having seen either physically in front of me, that would be a hard call to make

I do know that there are a few differences between both companies' processes but I'm not really in the position of telling people what to do since my opinion would be biased (I'm not only a good friend of kevin, but also jim smith who slaved over the artwork for this project and the playfield plastics that CPR screened and laser cut for us 3+ years ago

#37 5 years ago
Quoted from jake35:

There is a difference and in this case I am going to support the company that has been working on this for almost five years, hand drew all the art stateside, and took a calculated approach to que the numer of commitments in advance.

I cannot in good conscious support the company that appears to have strong armed their way into a repeat of the license to allow this and then is purposefully running a pf that was already accounted for by CPR.

IMHO! There are to many other games that need new pfs and Mirco actively choosing to do joust when CPR has been working on it for years is a low move, not good for the pinball community, and just not needed given the limited demand for this title to begin with. Same as with TAF, the market and work was established via CPr and Mirco comes in to try and take sales when he could be doing the right thing and just avoiding compycat titles.

#38 5 years ago

one thing that I will say is that from looking at mirco's photos, I see a few things that [may be] viewed as incorrect

I know that kevin and mike are making sure that the joust playfield will be as perfect as possible and have been reaching out to me on a regular basis for information

#39 5 years ago

Great that you try to cause trouble without pointing out real things - and I doubt that there are real issues as I used the factory films. So no chance for art issues unless the version changed....

Please point out the issues you see or don't write stuff like that.

Regards,
Mirco

I will be creating a playfield swap thread once I have the reproduction playfield in hand. I've already started stripping down my current machine and figured anything that I find that can be beneficial to others should be posted to try and make this process as easy and straight forward as possible.

the one thing that I have found already is that the metal posts with the rubber sleeves around them (these ones secured with an #10 nylon lock nut (11/32" socket) from the underside also have a washer on the underside (so, don't lose them!!
530-5332-00530-5332-00

ps
keeping the rubber sleeves on them allows you to grip the post and makes it 100x easier to loosen the nut from underneath

additionally, after running my game with the reproduction plastics for about 3 years, I've identified all of the places underneath the plastics that are potential places that will rub the ink from the plastics. I will post images tonight or tomorrow for all of those looking to bundle their purchase of a new playfield with new plastics along with my solutions to help keep this from occurring and keep your newly restored game looking beautiful

#42 5 years ago

any updates on when we can expect CPR pf?

#43 5 years ago

I would prefer to let them make the announcement

I know that we are making a change to the playfield plastics and possibly adding something [nifty] to the set (if I can work out the logistics for it

Oh good, there is a Joust owners thread. We picked one up in a bulk buy a few weeks ago. Been picking at it, hope to bring it to show at least if we don't put it in our location.

what is your location in Appleton?

#46 5 years ago
Quoted from Whysnow:

what is your location in Appleton?

Player 2 Arcade Bar. The pins we have on location are currently run by an operator, but I am willing to guess they will be out once we get through fixing up this lot. Our space isn't huge, so I feel my time with this machine will be limited but still really excited to work on such a rare game. No acid damage and it just needed a fuse for solenoids.

#48 5 years ago

Curious as to where my old Jousts ended up. I know it's a long shot but considering the relative rarity of the title...

I sold a nice one back around 2001? to Darin from Phoenix Arcade whom I believe already had a buyer lined up for it. The freight company (can't remember who but they did liftgate service) dropped it off the end of their liftgate at the destination, shattering the glass, damaging the legs, and I believe messing up one of the lockdown bars. I would think any collector that has inspected theirs closely would recognize the evidence of previous damage, though I'm also sure Darin did a good job of repairing/replacing parts before selling.

I later picked up an average condition example that was missing the legs so there was chipping around the base, the marquees were faded, and the playfields showed a bit of wear. I passed that one along in 2003? to Mark Capps in Atlanta and where it went from there I have no idea. I had made some very basic legs for it out of 2x4's that I sanded a little, painted black, and countersunk some bolts through them to attach where the original legs attached. They worked well to stabilize and protect the game but were obviously not original and would be a clear identifying feature of this example.

Anybody have any leads?

Thanks,
Richard

as some of you know, a little over 4 years ago, jim smith (a former CPR artist) and I partnered with CPR and were able to reproduce the joust playfield plastics, helping out nearly 60 owners. it was a stressful yet satisfying project that took a lot of effort, time and money to accomplish

a few years prior to that, I had sent mr. smith a NOS playfield and he painstakingly reproduced all of the artwork, done to every last halftone dot but at that time, CPR did not have the means to reproduce widebody playfields

fast forward to earlier this year, when CPR made the announcement that they had purchased a new digital printing suite of products which would enable them to produce playfields, backglasses and playfield plastics on demand and the joust playfields would be among the first products using this technology

below are some hi-res images (best viewed by clicking on them to maximize the image size) to show just how fine the details their digital printer can produce
kevin has been gracious enough to allow me to share the following images with you the pinside community for a project that I have been working on with them for the past few months

please note that the playfield shown is a sample that I am still verifying to ensure that all elements are positioned correctly. this particular sample has not been color colored or clear coated yet so the colors may still appear a bit flat and wood grain visible through the ink in some areas, but I wanted to show just how amazing mr. smith's reproduction artwork will look on the final product (he really needs to be commended for all his hard work
