Heya Tom. It has, and there has been a bit of disagreement regarding whether it truly should be classified as a middle-pop.

I didn’t think so, because the style seems to be all about being in between the flippers, not merely in the middle of the playfield.

In Carolina’s case, the distance between the flippers and pop bumper is so great that it really doesn’t have any real interplay other than on the way out. As such, I wouldn’t personally categorize it with the rest which are notably different in terms of gameplay.

Got that middle pop!

I cannot be more stoked! It’s already 4 on the floor, bright, tight and ready for league tonight.

City. I used to run into AABs all the time years ago. Replay games are catching up with me.

Room for another member?

I picked this up recently but I’ve got a few games ahead of it in the queue so sadly I won’t play it for a while.

After falling in love with Spanish Eyes at Free Play Florida last November, I'm now an official member of the middle-pop club with my new Miss-O!

November 2016: I fell in love with Spanish Eyes, but couldn't find one.

May 2017: Traded a Jolly Roger for the closest thing to Spanish Eyes that I could find, a Miss-O.

November 2018: Sold Miss-O to put the funds toward an X-Files.

November 2018 - June 2023: Continued searching for a Spanish Eyes.

July 2023: I'm back in the middle pop club baby!!! FINALLY, after almost SEVEN YEARS, I finally got my hands on a Spanish Eyes, and it's MAGNIFICENT. I picked it up from some nice folks about ~2 hours away, who've had it the last five years. They've NEVER had the machine opened up (they were amazed to look inside when I opened it for inspection), and based on how obviously reliable it's been for them -- and everything else I see about its condition -- this was definitely in the hands of someone who knew how to refurbish & tune up machines. It has a pristine BGResto backglass, everything works as it should, flippers are strong, and all the pops are PERFECTLY tuned on a hair trigger for INSANE pop bumper action. The playfield colors are fresh with minimal wear -- a little around the pops that's been covered with mylar, a spot from saucer kickout, and just a smidge starting around some of the inserts. There are LEDs throughout, but they're early Comets that are dim and ghost, so I'm replacing them with newer Sunlight & Warm Whites. I could not be happier with this purchase!

You CAN'T play this game and NOT have fun, hearing those rapid firing pops, crazy ball action, and the wild bouncing-back-from-death around that middle pop. I can't think of any EM that makes me smile as much as this one does.

Fun upgrade for anyone else with Spanish Eyes -- I put Comet 'Fire' bulbs under the Special inserts. It's a GREAT effect, when the Special is lit, it's almost 'animated' as the inserts now flicker to bring your attention to that shot. I tried to capture it on video to share but it doesn't look remotely close to reality. So just trust me on it, and give it a try!

Congratulations on the pick-up. I've always liked this game and I especially like the artwork. Some don't have a similar opinion but I'm a fan of this unique, very 70s style art.

Congrats! I love mine. Conservative post setup, sensitive tilt, and AAB at 50,000 has been the sweet spot for me.

In the club with a Spanish eyes. 80+ Owner passed away daughter is cleaning out the house.

According to daughter they had it since new. At some point the center plastic broke so dad put 2 spinners on the playfield. He wired the spinners in to the 10 pt switch on left side. Actually did a decent job. I'm going to try and play it this way 1st. If it is fun I'll keep it. But I'd like stuff on hand to revert back. Any holes that need filled will be dowel rod flush. This is a cheap player game I'm not looking for it to be perfect

If anyone has a used plastic set hit me up. Only really need the center plastic. Trying to avoid buying all new.

Also- any pics of center with plastic off so I can see how it should be setup would be appreciated. Obviously need to buy some posts/hardware.

Thanks

Wow, I bet that plays WAY different... it's probably also very hard to hit the rollover above the hole to collect the bonus/special. Looks like it would have to just fall down from the pops. Hmm, that actually may make it easier than the horseshoe...

I don't know yet. I'm out of room at my house. Game came up for cheap- so I bought it and dropped it off at my friend's house lol.

It's free storage and he gets a game to mess with.

We still got to get it to start. Will dig into it this weekend some. Once we get it to go through start up- will clean playfield and toss rubbers on it and play.

Freedom prototype on eBay now for an unreasonable price. Sounds like he might accept a reasonable offer.

Here is another game that might be up for debate
not sure if has been mentioned previously.
Obviously a wide gap between flippers and pop bumper
and its upper set of flippers

Interesting find, Tom! Hmmmm… gut feeling on this one is not a middle-pop. At least not in the way we’ve been informally judging them so far.

Main reasoning is that if the pop wasn’t there, the gameplay would still be pretty much the same. Not much interactivity other than a few possible rebounds into the targets.

#375 4 months ago

Can not get more in the middle of the playfield with a pop than this game.

#376 4 months ago

It kinda is, Pop is in the middle of the upper flippers.

#377 4 months ago

Well... maybe you are right. Even though the action isn't tightly contained around the flippers like the rest, it's still "middle of flippers" unlike, say, Struggle Buggies for example which merely has a lower pop bumper in the middle of the playfield.

So hey, if y'all think so, let's count it.

#378 4 months ago

i would equate it (Royal Flash) to All Star Basketball as to the effectiveness of pop bumper placement
to flippers and having any real effect or interaction (interactivity)
just spread out a bit more
pasted_image (resized).pngpasted_image (resized).png

#379 4 months ago

i agree though that the best middle pop games are those from the late 60s to mid 70s
with the now more or less standard placements (of pop to flipper)
with lots of direct interactivity

the kind with a "cellar cage" where escape from draining is possible with luck and skill.
