If that wire took a lot of abuse, it may have sheared off inside the insulation. Make sure you have continuity when probing both ends and wiggling it around.

Have you determined what that wire is? Power? Ground? Sounds like it's not a switch connection.

Also- might be a dumb question, but are the motors turning on without driving the hand anywhere?
