Documenting a touch up to a fast and fun Williams game. I welcome all advice and suggestions. I am working on this for fun not profit and look forward to keeping this in my collection for a very long time.
I have a 3D printer and will be working on things as I go. If you have fun ideas for 3D printable mods for Johnny let me know. Otherwise I look forward to sharing my progress and hearing what Pinside has to say. Photo of the hand that I am told will haunt me.

Thanks Tim for the recommendation of Metal Rescue for the legs and Nevr Dull any metal parts. They are being powder coated at this time black. Thanks Vid for the recommendation of Pyle speakers. They added a huge huge huge edge to the game. Love it!

The hand motors were making a wicked noise. Good to see nothing inside was damaged.

What to do about this.... That Launch Ball font is awful. No one is gonna 'buy an extra ball ever' Wouldn't it be cool if that .... oh wait not ready to talk about that yet.

Good work...my gear box is in need of lubing also.

I also need to refurb my gearbox. It doesn't even move to the right via flipper button control :/
Keep up the good work.

#11 8 years ago

Awesome. I have a very nice JM and love it. Can you say more about the speakers. I'm not familiar. Also looking forward to seeing other mods you may come up with.

I have red TitanPinball rubbers throughout which look great and plays awesome (flippers are superbands).

Read somewhere in one of Vid's restore threads that's what he recommended. [Might have been NPO sorry, but my mind swears it ws Vid, regardless a great addition] Great suggestion as they sound amazing. Don't think I need a sub now! They are now $20 less then what I paid for them on Amazon. Like $47 now... Or $30us lol, damn exchange rate is killer right now.

Photo: Speaker with the silver painted black so you can't see the silver through the grill.

Front Panel : Drop shadow is a work in progress. Otherwise almost done. The shadow for Mnemonic is closer then the one for Johnny. Colors are not final as I'll match them up with proper pantone swatches.

Also for the coin door I'll be doing some die cuts of the Pharma Kom logo. Just like the Encom ones that were done for Tron. Undecided on the button if it should say "login" or have the password 3D thingy from the movie on it. So far I am leaning towards login as I have other plans for the login thingy. Any who, I welcome all thoughts for or against.

Quick update. Watched JM for the fifth time (Long airplane ride with no in flight movie). There is some much inspiration in this movie for art. I think I have decided to go with an alternate cab graphic package. I'll post here, but I want the collective Pinside to help me decide. Please up vote the designs you like most. I understand that it's my machine and the only opinion that matters, but sometimes you can't see the forest for the trees.

..... back to the drawing board for the cab art... gotta find a way to put this all together....Maybe an alt backglass cab art package is in order... Aurich style... He might have his hands full at the moment. Might have to bust out the Wacom.

Busted out the pantone book and these are about as close as it gets. Used the color under the legs where no sun has hit.

Update. After traveling around NA for work and play I am back on this project.
DSC02986.jpgDSC02986.jpg

NinjaBoot has offered so kindly to clear coat this for me. Also let me borrow his HP 4600 so now I have scans of the cab and most of the play field.

The Mylar left some sticky crap. Otherwise no damage to the screen. Joy!
DSC02990.jpgDSC02990.jpg
Also, some quick touchups = not a bad looking stick of wood.

Noticed tonight that some of the inserts are lifting. FML. OK well ...
DSC02992.jpgDSC02992.jpg
Thankfully I have a dremel, and a heat gun, and a stock pile of Loctite epoxy.. nice! I can do this.

Finished sanding the cab. Put a single coat of black paint on it. The cab was SO smooth after sanding 3 times it feels like a shame to put anything on it..

Also cleaned up the backbox mounting metal. Pumpkin for scale. Metal.pngMetal.pngSanding.pngSanding.png

Clear is back from the amazing NinjaBOot. Damn does it look smooth. The hardest part is the waiting. Gives me time to get these cab decals done.

Alive!
We had our first two games on this tonight!! Some small minor issues but nothing stopping us from having a game. After a long fight with the CPU board it looks like an ic was blown at some point. The front two flippers don't work but everything else is good. The hand is working perfectly and the cleaning has removed all loud grinding.

The to do list
- figure out the switch error on the flippers
- properly secure the left ramp and add dolphin mod
- put on temp alt translite and decals or wait for someone else to do better ones
- give one more solid clean and polish
- fix drop target not resetting
- add mirror blades and side trim

Otherwise this table looks like brand new!!

Thanks
- my wife for looking after the kid so I could finish this project
- Ninjaboot for selling the machine, clear coat, and being a sounding board at every little hang up
- Stretch for getting me an IC off his AF so we could have a game tonight.
- comet for the sick LEDs
- Nitro amusements for the mirror blades
- Marco / pinball life for taking my money and having the parts needed to do this all
- everyone in this thread for keeping me going and providing inspiration to do this!

#40 8 years ago

Nice - I would add a glare guard for the DMD. Either Comet's microlouver film or bent plastic.

After some transport damage back on this project. Printed the custom cab decals today, decided to go more like the original ones, with a custom touch. Off for lamination and then application. I'll post photos when I am done. Then the pain-staking task of testing all the cables from the pull and board damage in May last year, then I can start to play this machine again. Also on the buy list is a color dmd, then I can start working on the custom backglass v2.

#45 6 years ago

Decided to go with a custom decal inspired by the original. I also found an original 135mm movie reel of JM. I'll be doing some scans of that for a new art package. If you have fav scenes from the movie let me know.
