If it's any consolation, they are making a remake of Theater Of Magic where the Trunk does not spin and the Trapdoor does not open.
This will make it much more reliable.
Quoted from Astropin:So in 1990 Whirlwind could do three spinning disks and they are still around today. But 18 years later we can no longer make them reliable?
Sealed bearings are so great today compared to 30 years ago, that they should be able to inexpensively build one that could run for decades without service.
Concentric gearing has been around since the 1600s so it ain't rocket science.....
Quoted from CrazyLevi:They made like 9 Police Academy movies bro...just saying
Yeah or two dozen James Bond, with a lot of stinkers
Quoted from Multiballmaniac1:In all seriousness I wonder if people canceled their orders due to the update.
I know of one that did for sure.
Quoted from spinal:Whatever they do now they cannot lower the price. Doing that is a straight admission of failure and a sign that they are not a boutique company. Imagine Ferarri admitting they couldn't fix some feature so they cut it and then lowered the price of a car. What would that say about them. JJP is the Ferarri of pinball and this is the worst move they could make.
A better example would be after Ferrari taking your money, you waiting the usual 2 years for your car to be finished, and then in the last 6 month stretch they tell you:
a: Your car will now have 6 cylinders rather than the 12 it had when you ordered.
b: The 12 speaker Media System has been replaced by an AM/FM/CD player.
Ferrari would like to share with you this great news, because now the car will be much more reliable, for the same price !!!!
Quoted from adborto:What about redesigning the spinning disk to have a magnet in the middle like twister?
What about just giving us what we paid for?
Quoted from GorillaBiscuits:Nobody is getting burned here.
Except the people who can't get a deposit refund or have to pay a fee on their refund.
Those people seem burnt.
Quoted from SilverballNut:I just got the refund (minus fees) posted to my paypal account.
Quoted from ronaldvg:Not in Europe. 1000 Euro non-refundable.
Quoted from attack7777:The way I see it, the game has changed,

Quoted from CrazyLevi:Ok so when do we get that humor?
It's the same trick you used to do to your parents:
Vid: Dad, can I borrow $2000 to buy a Dacia?
Dad: $2000 ????? You are fncking crazy if you think I have that kind of money to lend you!!!!!
V: Hmmm, OK, can I borrow $100?
D: Yes, that seems much more sane.
Quoted from Sinestro:It's actually worse....a 1972 spinning disk. Fireball had it first.
And the Fireball disc REALLY puts some evil spin on the balls.
In the twitch video, the disc allows most balls to travel across it unaffected.
Quoted from LTG:The bookcase in TAF gets cracks, and breaks, and the arms that turn it break, from moving and balls bouncing across it. And it doesn't spin in all kinds of directions and at different speeds.
The trunk in TOM cracks and breaks all the time.
It would have been better if WMS glued it in place.

Quoted from Agima2000:This is how it looks when the discs fail

Believe it or not, there is a company that offers off-the-shelf solutions to those kinds of problems; and they are less that 2 hours away from JJP....
Every CNC repair tech knows of them.
Quoted from OnTheSnap:My take is that they already took a full quarter slip on their plans. And were looking at least another 1-2 quarter slip attempting to redesign it.
Like your sister-in-law, JJP is always late.
We count on them being late.
I was totally fine waiting (as I'm sure everyone else was) rather than have the best features removed.
(and there is no way it takes 6 months to re-design a concentric spinning disc. You figure out where the weakness is (gearing, bearings or mounting) and fix it)
Quoted from OnTheSnap:Armchair engineering is always a breeze.
I hear ya.
But in CNC 100s of companies have gone out of business since the 80s. No manuals, no replacement parts.
Every hour the machine is down, the shop is losing money (kind of like Pinball).
As a repair tech, you don't have 6 months.
You diagnose why the part failed (Bearings, Gearing, Mounting), you measure (is this a Metric or Inch tooth pitch), and you repair.
It ain't rocket science, all this drive technology has been around since the 1600s
Quoted from Mike_J:Well, let's move on to the next one. No sense dwelling on the past.
That's true.
I've got another POTC that still works great.
Quoted from CrazyLevi:What good would this do anybody? How could this possibly help the company, or in fact, the consumer?
I think Eric's explanation was thorough enough.
Even if Jack gave you an explanation, it would only be the "Public Explanation" and not necessarily the real reason.
"Hey folks, let's face it. Were bleeding money here, alright? Saving $50 a game for the 3-spinner, and $12 a game for the trunk - that's real money when you multiply it across 1200 games! Were talkin' whaaaataya got there $75,000 bucks? I could almost pay off a pornstar with that kind of loot." - quote never heard from JJ
Quoted from jar155:It's pretty dickish to make claims that the company is bleeding money and that's forcing them to make these changes. At best, you're calling them liars, but you're also implying that the company is likely to fail and they're resorting to company-saving measures. I'm preeeeeeetty sure you don't have eyes on their financial books.
So feel free to call them liars, but just come out and say, "Jersey Jack Pinball is lying" if that's what you think is going on. Maybe cut the cute story out.
It's comedy.
It's sarcasm.
It's hyperbole.
It's not an actual quote.
Quoted from vid1900:- quote never heard from JJ
Quoted from jar155:But it was preceded by a claim that a public explanation would only be a farce.
I know you are brand new to pinball, but JJ is famous for telling a hungry crowd "....and hey, a few of you guys might have a nice surprise for Christmas!" implying that WOZ would be in their hands in 2 months; when games actually did not ship for another year.
(I guess in his defense, he did not say which Christmas... )

Same as Gary answering a question at Expo, "I don't know how many AC/DCs we made. I'd have to talk to Ron about that....What's that?.....I could not even guess how many. "
We all know that Gary knows exactly how many they made, but he expertly doges the questions he does not want to answer.
Quoted from danastude:I called my distributer today assure him of my excitement about upcoming POTC delivery. I also asked him if he had any cancelations. He informed me that he had none, but went on to say that he spoke with a few fellow distributors, and found out about two cancelations.
It's like when you take your 70" Sony KD back to BestBuy because the screen is flashing right out of the box, and you ask the manager "Did you get a bunch of these back because of the flashing problem?" and he tells you yours is the only one.
Then while he's typing away, you see there are 2 more of them returned on a cart behind him...
Quoted from jar155:Is it like a breeder with a box of accidental mutts in a cardboard box saying that 7 of the 9 dogs are already spoken for, so I should tell my friends to hurry and check out the other two? Is it like that, or like something else? Help me out here.
If your friends have kids, I'd probably recommend you steer them towards a purebred, stable breed.
You always want to meet both of your pups parents, to see their disposition.
Quoted from jar155:Uh...early release software is super common!
Yep, even your TV has to be firmware upgraded the moment you pull it from the box.
Quoted from Psw757:What else am I missing?
Taking orders today by showing the better version?
Quoted from Skyemont:Still with all these changes, it's better than this.
The music is better, that's for sure.............
Quoted from flashinstinct:.thats like saying mother theresa and stormy daniels are both the same because they are women.
Neither of them would let you wear a condom.
Quoted from OnTheSnap:OTOH, guys abandoning ship are probably the real motivator for them to reverse course. In a sense it’s the official vote.
Yep, vote with your cash.
If you are not happy with the downgrading of the spinner and chest = cancel .
If enough people cancel, they will have to give us what we paid for.
Quoted from tacshose:The expense is in manufacturing the games not the design.
Stern always says that the current development cost for a game is $1,000,000
Licensing costs
Programming costs
Engineering costs
Art design costs
Voice acting costs
Music costs
Prototyping costs
Just throw all that away?
Quoted from o-din:Twister has a disc that spins at different speeds by pulsing the motor, but wow changing directions?
What a technological marvel!
I can't believe someone figured out that if you reverse the polarity, the motor spins in the opposite direction.
Jacobi would be proud!
Quoted from Psw757:I hope they get the real voice callouts and music or it will be an absolute bust in my opinion. I’m not going to hold my breath on them paying for these assets because once again it’s disney and they couldn’t seem to pony up for Pirates so why would toy story be any different from a licensing perspective.
Those are some of the highest paid actors in Hollywood, so I'm pretty sure JJP will not have the cash to hire them for any voiceover work.
20. Jeremy Renner: $19 million
19. Matt Damon: $21 million
18. Ryan Reynolds: $21.5 million
17. Jennifer Lawrence: $24 million
16. Jennifer Aniston: $25.5 million
15. Emma Stone: $26 million
14. Ryan Gosling: $29 million
13. Samuel L. Jackson: $30.5 million
12. Tom Hanks: $31 million
11. Chris Hemsworth: $31.5 million
10. Akshay Kumar: $35.5 million
9. Salman Khan: $37 million
8. Shah Rukh Khan: $38 million
7. Tom Cruise: $43 million
6. Robert Downey Jr.: $48 million
5. Jackie Chan: $49 million
4. Adam Sandler: $50.5 million
3. Vin Diesel: $54.5 million
2. Dwayne Johnson: $65 million
1. Mark Wahlberg: $68 million
Quoted from thewool:Someone said Tom Hank's brother does TS voiceover work. He should be in budget and having that authenticity would be massive.
They also need to be able to use footage from the movies though, as this is an animation they will hopefully avoid all the permissions stuff.
Quoted from CrazyLevi:It can't be that simple, right?
When Williams "hired" Arnold to do T2 and DE hired him for LAH, he was the biggest and highest-paid movie star on the planet. Clint Eastwood wasn't exactly troy McClure either.
Secretly, I think Fred Young did Arnold's custom call outs, and Joe Pesci, and Johnny Depp, and.....
Quoted from CrazyLevi:Great. Hire that guy!
Fred runs though a bunch of his voices at Expo, but the video editing is obnoxious....
