I wonder if lighting a spinning disk suffered from problems with the slip rings?

If so I would try a LiPo or NiMH or ? battery in the disk with inductive loop charging from a fixed position when it isn't spinning which would be most of the time.

Should I patent that right now? Think so! (r)

#393 6 years ago
Quoted from ronaldvg:

... Also, steppers that report back their position are expensive as hell. And that would also need the appropriate controller that is not cheap.

Steppers don't need position feedback, they move one "position" for each command. Stepper controllers are a dime a dozen these days. They get used in every 3D printer, LASER cutting gantry, X-Carve or Carvey box, pick & place machine etc. I haven't personally made the step to use those instead of normal DC motors with quadrature encoders yet but that day is coming.

Seems like some great mod ideas being discussed here. 3 motor concentric ring toy with internal lighting, opening/closing truck mech. I'll get started on it!

Pinball is much different than most electronic industries.

At HP if we (as engineers) gave an unfinished/tested product to a customer and expected them to debug it for us we would be out on the street.

In pinball developers ask that you download log files on already sold products and send them in so they can get their project closer to "finished." Most people don't bat an eye at this.

Boggles my mind

#1026 6 years ago
Quoted from jar155:

Uh...early release software is super common! Beta testing has been pushed on the public a lot in recent years. Between opt-in beta programs for all kinds of major electronics and PC gear to just "ship and patch it later" mentality, there's a whole lot of unfinished software being sold.

I see, so buying some pinball machines is agreeing to the "opt-in" beta program. Got it.

I don't have to send my logs to the manufacturer when I update my [insert_your_favorite_appliance_here]. Guess you don't have to do it anytime if you don't want to.

Guess my MMr seems complete because it was started in 1997. Caveat Emptor

The amount of attention this manufacturer is getting for these small changes rivals when GM crushed all the EV-1 cars!

You guys are brutal. No wonder most manufacturers stay off this site. But this is [mostly] America where you can freely voice opinions.

Quoted from JoinTheCirqus:

...So JJP gets made “whole” at their new +$500 price point, and the game has been significantly reduced. That should not be acceptable to this community.

Huh? If the machine looks like it is worth the money buy it. I accept that they are producing pinball machines that people enjoy.

Quoted from Skyemont:

I have to agree. Showing a pinball 7 months ago and it's still not out. I feel like I have already owned it, played it, gotten bored and sold it.

All this will be forgotten when they start shipping I predict. You can't write off JJP, people like their stuff too much IMHO.

Quoted from Psw757:

I agree and don’t think it’s too much to ask for a shot map or simple rules guide.

JJP does an EXCEPTIONAL job on their manuals, there is no reason to think that it won't be well documented.

Quoted from screaminr:

Yes Houdini has a trunk with a lid that goes up and down, so if pirates did the same it wouldn't be innovative would it. PS what makes the Houdini trunk innovative is a ball gets flung the length of the playfield into it.

Using your reasoning Houdini isn't innovative because the ball launch copies Stern's Aerosmith ball flinger. Length of the playfield? Hardly, 20"

I'm really hoping JJP pulls this off successfully.

PotC doesn't weigh the same as a duck. Draw your own conclusions ( - :

#2146 5 years ago

My there are sure a lot of armchair pinball wizards here. Be open to the idea that the less they spend on PR the sooner the game will be on the showroom floor.

Quoted from imagamejunky:

On another note, JJP games were almost completely absent from the show. One DI and one TH (there was another locked up in the tournament room too). Not a single WOZ to be found. Surprising

Cali is a long way from Jersey. All their games were at Lodi

Quoted from PinMonk:

...Don't care about Muppets. Let that one get the crap beat out of it, if it's still happening).

Don't let Miss Piggy hear that, she may turn green (like Kermie) and wail on you ( - :

Quoted from Join_The_Cirqus:

Anything new here on more units shipping or just the same Tumbleweeds?

News: I'm sure JJP's highest priorities are building and shipping units. "Pinball is hard" Everyone's day will come I'm sure. Hang in there.

Quoted from Psw757:

15 a day i would consider pretty darn impressive.

Does JJP only build one model at a time? I.E. they stop building WOZ, etc while they build PotC?

#2909 5 years ago

I like Gibb's voice. I like Depps too, but can't have that.

I also like Cap't Jack Sparrows lines, they remind me of Yoda-Speak. Make me smile

#2912 5 years ago
Quoted from Psw757:

Gibbs is good but Barbosa would have been the real Pirate voice to get.

Can't disagree there, but then he is a bad guy.

Oh wait, all pirates are bad guys. What has Disney (R) done to my mind!?! ( - :

#2935 5 years ago

This thread has taken a disturbing turn. Not sure I want to ride this one out

#2950 5 years ago
Quoted from pinballj:

So my checklist:
...
Get Jack Sparrow hat for the unboxing - done
...

I'd go for an eyepatch too!

And don't forget the bottle of rum! Empty of course per Disney licensing requirements ) - :

They don't say how it has to be emptied, though.

#3039 5 years ago
Quoted from JY64:

JJP has owned Expo should game 5 should be revealed at Expo Texas or whenever JJP feels the urge

I think they will be more cautious on their next reveal ( - :

#3046 5 years ago

To point out how big the 800# gorilla in the room is:

Stern makes 50 pins a day according to TWIP today.

I've heard and believe that JJP makes ~1,000 games a year which isn't even 5 per day.

No idea about Spooky and the others.

#3050 5 years ago

I'm hoping all the manufacturers are successful at producing games, gives us all more choices right?

I hope this success doesn't come at the detriment of those who might choose to invest in the manufacturer's vision, as has happened.

Lots of change-up pitches in this industry. JJP introduces DI, it tanks for a while then takes off. Spooky introduces TNA, I think it will be a latent hit.

You can debate the above notion, just how I see it.

Quoted from screaminr:

the only thing I want to see there is the pinball hall of fame ( and the strippers)

On the latter you will be paying a lot more shekels for the same silicone. A word of advice (not from me of course) is keep moving in the club. If you sit down you will be accosted by the talent for lap dances at $20 a pop. That is how they make their $, not anything with the pole. Just like my old pinball saying: "It's a long way to $20 by ones..." ( - ;

I'll be at the hall of fame on Tropicana in a few weeks too. Mostly to gawk as one might do at strip clubs!

#3177 5 years ago
Quoted from Chitownpinball:

If the rumor is that Tim has one at the hall of fame, they are wrong.

Hope they manage to get one at the Banning event! That would be cool, even if you had to wait to play it.

#3181 5 years ago
Quoted from adol75:

I was hoping NYNY would have one, they did have a WOZ for a while, it's when I fell in love with that pinball actually.

I think NYNY in LV is strictly a Stern house.

#3183 5 years ago
Quoted from PanzerFreak:

They have a very nice lineup at NYNY, when I was in LV in January I saw a WOZ there as well. Treasure Island needs at least a Pirates!

Good to know that they at least entertain JJP.

Here is a list thanks to someone there now (within the last 24 hours)

Spiderman
Guardians
Ghostbusters
Aerosmith
Ironman
Deadpool
Walking Dead
Kiss LE
Starwars

Nice thing about the casinos is they are always open. For a morning person like me I usually have to wait until late afternoon for arcades to open, sigh.
