A traffic jam when you’re already late...

#902 6 years ago
Quoted from o-din:

I'm sure we're all going to be just as frustrated when we find out that potato head ball lock won't be making it into the final production model of Toy Story.

It’ll be there, just with his mouth fixed in the open position...

#903 6 years ago
Quoted from CrazyLevi:

What good would this do anybody? How could this possibly help the company, or in fact, the consumer?
I think Eric's explanation was thorough enough.

Even if Jack gave you an explanation, it would only be the "Public Explanation" and not necessarily the real reason.

"Hey folks, let's face it. Were bleeding money here, alright? Saving $50 a game for the 3-spinner, and $12 a game for the trunk - that's real money when you multiply it across 1200 games! Were talkin' whaaaataya got there $75,000 bucks? I could almost pay off a pornstar with that kind of loot." - quote never heard from JJ

well said. this topic has run it's course.
When do these games start shipping? I'd like to play one or maybe buy one on clearance.

Yeah I'm sure JJP will be blowing these out for 500 bucks. I'll take 5 please!

#907 6 years ago
Quoted from KoolFingers:

You'd be stuck with the code that's in it now with no updates unless you are or know a programmer.

With all the awesome programmers whipping out bootleg code, I have no doubt they will have current code updates that include the triple spin disc. Those machines are gonna be mega pricey.

Pieces would keep falling off.

They gotta keep the assembly line moving. If there are not enough orders then how do you keep it moving?
Well I guess there was that one time around 2013-14 where they came to what seemed like a halt for different reasons entirely.

#910 6 years ago
Quoted from DCFAN:

I'd say get moving on whatever the next title will be which is probably already well under way.

It would be nice be able to count on every game being a huge hit, but you really need to have a backup plan ready in case it isn't.

It's pretty dickish to make claims that the company is bleeding money and that's forcing them to make these changes. At best, you're calling them liars, but you're also implying that the company is likely to fail and they're resorting to company-saving measures. I'm preeeeeeetty sure you don't have eyes on their financial books.

So feel free to call them liars, but just come out and say, "Jersey Jack Pinball is lying" if that's what you think is going on. Maybe cut the cute story out.

#912 6 years ago

Are there any plans to put an adjusted POTC on location in Chicago to test it out/let people see it in person?

It's comedy.

It's sarcasm.

It's hyperbole.

It's not an actual quote.

I know you are brand new to pinball, but JJ is famous for telling a hungry crowd "....and hey, a few of you guys might have a nice surprise for Christmas!" implying that WOZ would be in their hands in 2 months; when games actually did not ship for another year.

(I guess in his defense, he did not say which Christmas... )

-

Same as Gary answering a question at Expo, "I don't know how many AC/DCs we made. I'd have to talk to Ron about that....What's that?.....I could not even guess how many. "

We all know that Gary knows exactly how many they made, but he expertly doges the questions he does not want to answer.

Just watched yesterday's jjp video. Game still looks awesome! It's the same game with not as cool of spinner. I understand the disappointment, but seriously it's the same game everyone raved about as far as game play and fun. The new disc does seem a little smaller than expected, but it works. I would still rather get this game over the other options currently out. Good job Eric, Keith, and team. Game looks great.

In reference to the first two pages of posts after the Wednesday stream:

I called my distributer today assure him of my excitement about upcoming POTC delivery. I also asked him if he had any cancelations. He informed me that he had none, but went on to say that he spoke with a few fellow distributors, and found out about two cancelations.

I call bullshit. While I am sure there are a few genuine cancelations due to “diskgate”, I believe that 85% of the people who post that they are canceling are not canceling, or never had a preorder in the first place.

I believe this thread contains a group of dreamers, who desperately want to start an avalanche of posts and/or cancelations thinking JJP will see this, and change their decision.

Again, I call Bullshit. Guys, IT AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN. They made a decision. MOVE ON.

The “new idea posts”, which I believe to be a fruitless exercise, are at least an attempt at something constructive. The “I’m canceling” posts are mostly troll like bashing, and “fake news”.

Give JJP some credit here. JJP created WOZ and started a revolution in what pinball could be. They inspired new startups with more innovative ideas. I credit them with busting Stern out of it’s dinosaur box, and with creating a Renaissance with our hobby.

POTC is still a great table without the triple disk.

OK, you can go back now to your JJP bashing. Bashers - Your welcome…..I gave you something new to smack down on. Me. Bash away, I am done with this thread.

Or maybe they are trying to make it not seem so bad as to not scare you into canceling? Could be your so called "fake news" that way?

#928 6 years ago

I’m excited to soon be able to play POTC, I’ve never played it. I’ve never seen the old version in person. I guess ingnorice is bliss. I have nothing to compare it to or be let down. Looks to still be a great pin

#929 6 years ago

Everyone always says pinball buyers on pinside are a minority, but how many non pinside people pre order games? Did JJP blast off this video explaining the changes to everyone who pre ordered or did they make a thread on pinside and call it a day?

Not sure. But over on RGP now, it looks like they are into something else.

I couldn't find the video clip on it but there's a scene in the old Albert Brooks movie Defending Your Life when Brook's character goes to pick up his new BMW. He gets to the dealership and sees the car on the lot and is like wow it looks bigger. The salesman says that's not yours, yours is the one that's behind it. The camera then pans to the car that's behind it which is the model he ordered and of course is a lot smaller. Albert Brooks tells the sales guy you really shouldn't put them next to each other like that.
I feel this is a lot like that..

It's like when you take your 70" Sony KD back to BestBuy because the screen is flashing right out of the box, and you ask the manager "Did you get a bunch of these back because of the flashing problem?" and he tells you yours is the only one.

Then while he's typing away, you see there are 2 more of them returned on a cart behind him...

I prefer the honest approach-

"Sure, everybody's been canceling and now I'm going to be stuck with twenty of these things. Are you really sure you still want yours?"

......will nail down a sale every time.

And I have heard each distributor has been required to buy CE’s with their allocations of other models.

Agreed. My profession is sales. And I'm pretty sure I have the same distributor as the guy who posted. I also called him today. And he gave me the same word. However I don't blame him. If it was my business the last thing I'm going to say is oh yeah everybody's been canceling. He admitted to one CE cancel. However I'm sure there is more. I don't believe everyone is lying. Now I'm not sure I believe the poll numbers. But I believe the people that posted. I called just to confirm and give a heads up that Im now strongly on the fence but I'm still holding out hope. Just to make sure I still had time.

I bet you have another trollish analogy in you. Dig deep! Find it!

Here, I'll offer a starter for you. I had a JJP employee tell me that POTC is still their most preordered game by far. They also know I'm not buying one, so no real incentive to sway me.

Is it like a breeder with a box of accidental mutts in a cardboard box saying that 7 of the 9 dogs are already spoken for, so I should tell my friends to hurry and check out the other two? Is it like that, or like something else? Help me out here.

JJP is still going to sell many Pirates regardless of the change. Yeah the changes suck but it still has a pretty amazing ship toy and multiple other features including incredibly deep code, high quality HD animations and an excellent audio package.

Toys are only part of the puzzle that makes a pinball machine great, code is another and that's an area where JJP is leading the industry again. The more code the mode value we are getting out of these $8k, $9k, $10k+ pin purchases in my opinion.

Ya - I didn't have a pre-order. However after I played the prototype I was strongly considering ordering one. After the changes I now am not. So a technical cancellation? No.

A forfeited order? Yes.

#941 6 years ago
Quoted from flashinstinct:

What if they took out the fast spinning feature completely and have the disc spin at low speed to award the combinations in a swaying motion like water in a glass on a ship...sway left a bit, the right alot, then left alot, then right a bit and settle on the awards. So outer ring spins left, inner ring spins right, center right spins left and make it the primary function of the disc. I could get behind that. If you take the spinning out of the fast spiining out of the equation they could perhaps keep the mech. Plus I would be cool and alot sacrifice fast spinning

Great idea! https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/potc-save-the-3-disks-poll

#943 6 years ago

I guess a real good question would be how many that were not going to buy this game before are so in love with the new design as compared to the prototype, that now they are convinced they are ready to shell out the $9000+.

If your friends have kids, I'd probably recommend you steer them towards a purebred, stable breed.

You always want to meet both of your pups parents, to see their disposition.

I switched from a CE to LE. Looking forward to the game and seeing what a new designer has to offer. Definitely disappointed and still hope for a little art revision and a trunk mod.

I feel this way too - but I can't shake the thought of Eric's disappointment with the change. I can't get myself to buy a $9500 pin where the designer is disappointed with major changes prior to production.

Anyway -my thinking at this point is to re-evaluate after it ships and the end user reviews are in. if they are raving like they have been for DI, I will buy back in.

If I get one, I will just disable the disk in software and play the game without it.

Give JJP some credit here.

Everyone is giving JJP credit. They have and I am sure will do a ton of good things for our awesome hobby. Simply because some of us are disappointed/taken aback does not mean we are not rooting for them. Even those of us that did cancel/are now not placing an order hope they sell a ton of these games to others.

We are our own support group and the flood of emotions from the late changes are understandable and everyone has the right to react in their own way. If you do not like what you are reading there is a convenient drain button - utilize it bro. Let the rest of us work through the aftermath how each sees fit.
