Quoted from ZMeny:

We have never backed off our praise of POTC, not sure where you heard us brush it off weeks later. You must be thinking of someone else. I continue to own the game and thinks its one of the best out there. Got to a mini-wizard two nights ago and felt like I climbed Everest. haha

To each their own, but you do own a Star Wars Prem/LE which I continue to praise for being one of stern's best ever made, as well as a few others in your collection that we love.

Yeah I don't recall Zach or sdtm brushing it off either. Maybe bc they never did a proper review? That might be bc Zach sells jjp pins which is understandable. I know Zach's mentions a few times that he really enjoys it and it's at his home ... Bone already declared it one of the best ever in his top 10. I was surprised to see it didn't make Zach's list.

Not sure about your part of the world, but in the US at least the only edition available is the SE. If you can, get the LE and if you want to spend get the CE.

I'm in the Europe part of the world, and from the website of a local distributor he still has CEs in stock, but no LEs... at a very high price tag (about $16k)... was just wondering if the differences between the LE and the CE affect the game of if it's just eye candy... I could either jump on the CE or wait 'till an LE shows itself on the market... so is the CE a pure visual improvement on the LE or is there more to it than that?

#9903 4 years ago

is that $16 k US dollars or Euro?

#9904 4 years ago

I tried to convert 14k euro, was guessing at the exchange rate... just checked back at their site and I see that now only have the SE left... all CEs now also gone!! So now the big question is, what do you miss out on with the SE? I could look at the comparison charts, but I prefer to ask owners because they are the best at plucking out the relevant info...

You miss:
Powder Coat
Shaker Motor
Invisiglass
Starlight
2- Spinning pop bumpers
Target Decals - you can buy
Headphone jack and volume control on outside
Topper
Some custom molded playfield toys

Aside from that the game plays exactly the same

#9906 4 years ago

The only thing I believe you'll miss is that Starlight panel, Spinning bumpers. You can always add a shaker, and invisiglass, plus the Headphone jack, which I've never used.

I've been looking into this also. There is a lot missing on the SE. RGB GI lighting is gone. The spinning toy on the pops is gone. Star field gone. Shaker motor and invisiglass gone. Powder coated legs and rails gone. Headphone and volume Jack gone. Topper gone.

I feel like they either underpriced the LE or overpriced the SE with the amount of differences. I probably missed some but those are the major ones. At only a 1k difference in price I really feel I missed out on getting an LE, this will be the desired version in the future. Not sure yet if I will bother getting an SE, I might just move on and consider it a missed opportunity to get a great LE pin.

Kind of a weird situation here where they have a pin that everyone wants in the LE but are not going to make it anymore. I have zero interest in Wonka.

#9908 4 years ago
Quoted from pcprogrammer:

RGB GI lighting is gone.

Yeah forgot the RGB GI,,,,,definitely 1k added to the LE, SE should have been 8k, but they're selling and I think there's only 4 or 5 left out there. Don't see them being available next week.

Did you do a follow up on SW Prem? The only one I have seen is where you trashed it relentlessly.

I will have to check for it. I also recall one where BM66 was beat up pretty bad, too.

#9912 4 years ago

Although the LE has s lot of stuff over the SE, justifying the 1k extra, from a gameplay point it seems like they're all the same... is the code the same and the rules/depth of play? I guess the RGB GI isn't affecting the way the game plays... is it? That's colour changing GI I take it...?

Tempted to move the post in the “I” lane..... anybody moved it?

Quoted from locksmith:

I moved it. Its a real drain monster. Its ruined some good games.

Quoted from steigerpijp:

Yeah just move it, and even then its amazing how easilly balls drain there

I moved mine early on and have no regrets as it has cut down on cheap drains, but I still get enough to feel no shame. Lately, I seem to have had balls draining left and right there regardless.

#9916 4 years ago

There’s gotta be some slight code differences like “shoot she starmap for more time”

What would you experienced players of this game say is the best part of this game (from a gameplay viewpoint as opposed to aesthetics)?

Its great vibe. Lots of shots, strategy options and cool features all contribute to that.

Do you find any of the shots are so difficult that it's annoying? My eyes are getting worse with age, and incredibly tight shots are starting to become a case of luck more than skill

Only two shots that I find to be a real bitch are the tortuga shot and the extra ball shot through the pops. You just need to have control of the ball and not flip like a wild man on the fly.

You can add the spinning Tortuga Tom, but it costs $220. So, missing RGB GI, Starfield, and topper. Can add shaker and headphones, powder coat if you don’t like stainless, buy the extra plastic toys such as Devil’s Triangle, etc. Same machine, really, just without the LE label. If I were doing it over, I’d spring for the CE but am not concerned about the standard being any less fun to play.

Yes to the extra ball shot - I’ve only hit it once so far.

$220 where do you see that? That seems expensive. Did you buy the SE or LE

Spoke w the parts department at JJP. It is expensive, so in the spirit of cheapness, I’m gonna see how much I notice it when my SE gets here. I did order the headphone jack as it is pretty impressive to hear, amazing sound, as well as the Devil’s Triangle arch over the left wireform, also a shaker.

#9927 4 years ago

so with headphone jack, probably over $100, shaker $140k, Invisiglass $300, Powder coat - don't know cost. $220 for the 1 spinning pop bumper not to mention probably another $220 for the other one that spins under the ramp, Already up to $980.

That's without the RGB GI, Starlight, which both cannot be added. Definitely $1k added. I don't think Stern adds that much to their Premiums, but I could be wrong.

eBay, neca series 3.

Back of the box shows some other interesting characters as well, cursed skeleton Jack Sparrow might look good.

Have to be honest that I procrastinated doing this for a while as Tom was fine but wow, once installed it totally gels with the art and theming. Really can’t go wrong with any of the characters.
Sparrow is the only goofy drunkard one that would be popping out of a barrel though so it’s perfect!

Apart from giving an extra ball, do those shots have a lot of importance in the gameplay? I appreciate the question sounds a bit dumb, but sometimes certain shots aren't needed too much to progress the game... stupid example: the secret passage in WH2O...

#9931 4 years ago

LE 1111 is in the house. Played great out of the box.

The extra ball shot is really only for that as far as I know. If it isn’t lit, I don’t try.

The tortuga shot however is pretty important as mystery awards, tortuga mb etc... all tied to that shot.

Quoted from delt31:

Yeah so kaneda is definitely getting this game. Heard the podcast and you guys are right - hilarious.
He knows what's up and guess what..... He'll be gushing about it shortly. Impossible for someone who likes Pinball not to enjoy this game.

I really don't think he'll dig it. He always emphasizes how he prefers or enjoys some part of a narrative in pinball, and this game is more about shots being made, lighting modes up, and scoring big. For his sake, it'd be cool if he enjoys it, but I'd be surprised if he did to the extent most do on this board.

We shall see..!

Damn it I might have to. How do you know where to cut? After that I know how to take off but how do you attach the new figure if they don't have holes in them?

Hacksaw at the jointed waist for a clean cut held the figure over the pop bumper cap and drilled pilot holes using the cap as the template, use the two screws from Tom and install the pop cap and done.

Drop of hot glue for the gun, rum bottle and hat.

I think a Barbosa figure would look good as well.

Do you wear glasses? I find now I have to have 2 types of glasses. One for reading books and a longer distance one which will allow me to focus easily on 50cm to about 1.5m. Cannot play pinball without these longer distance ones. It's a bitch and makes me feel old, but what can I do. Wear the glasses!

Don't use multi-focals for play.

I've been feeling kind of let down and irritated today. I've finally landed on a pin that I want... Pirates LE. Seems like a cruel joke now that it can't be purchased. Yes, it took me awhile to decide I really wanted this pin but in all fairness it was only on the line for a blink of an eye. They made so few of them and in my mind this is their most fun pin to play. I hesitated at first because of the theme but after playing it at MGC I was sold. I'm picky with what I buy and I always have very few pins so this kind of hurts. I have zero interest in Wonka after playing it.

Are the SEs all gone? Automated had a few last time someone posted.

I played Wonka at the NWPAS this weekend and enjoyed it as a game but not sure if I am going to grab one. So hard to tell with just a few plays and without being able to hear the audio (forgot my headphones).

Yes, they have a few SEs but the more I've thought it over the LE was really the way to go. There was so much value in the 1K and you can't add in all the missing features. Gameplay is the same on the SE as far as I've been told. I think the LE was the perfect package. Kind of makes me annoyed over JJPs business model, slow to get games out the door and they can't even properly meet demand for any given title. Too many Hobbits and too few Pirates. I still can't hate them, just disappointed with them.

Wonka, yea I guess it was fun overall. Just don't like the theme at all and thought Pirates was more fun to play by a large margin. Wonka will never be on my purchase list.

They were running for about 6 months. Hardly the blink of an eye. They started in October and finished in April, I think. The biggest problem is discgate messed up the demand and people cancelled preorders and wrote it off, at which point JJP cut projections and line estimates, shortening the amount of production. Then when people finally got a chance to PLAY the games and word started to spread that it was indeed awesome, the production was all sold and winding down and what distributors had was all there was. It was clear that supply was running out about a month or six weeks before you couldn't get an LE. It's not like it happened overnight.

Wonka is super-underwhelming, and I really think this is a Medieval Madness/Cirqus Voltaire situation where an ultimately very popular pin has production cut short for a "hotter" pin that underwhelms at release. I think JJP will circle back to Pirates, but who knows when that will be?

In comparison to Stern 6 months is a blink of an eye. Stern games are run for years then later some are vaulted after. Pirates was on the line far shorter than any other pin they've done and for me I wasnt paying that close attention so it's understandable that I'm irritated. What I'm worried about is that if they make more LEs they will give them the yellow WOZ treatment. I'm not going to overpay for a pirates LE. $9,500 is a hefty enough price.

Stern Beatles ran one time for one month and just barely ran over half the announced number before bad sales (and ridiculous pricing) killed the pin. It will likely never be vaulted. Are you crying about that?

Nope, not really understandable. It was known, around here, anyway, for quite a while that the run was being cut short due to customer orders being cancelled and negative sentiment after discgate. JJP is not a charity that can run on the kindness of donors. There was no secret that this would not be a WoZ or Hobbot, or Dialed-In length run. Dithering on a purchase decision when the end is widely known to be close is a bad idea. Your indecision is the reason you have no Pirates LE. JJP was just reacting to the market forces that didn't swing around until it was too late and Wonka was scheduled in.

That said, you may get lucky in a year or eighteen months and JJP runs it again, but I bet the price will bump at least $500. Still, if the game holds up well for the people that have it now, $500 more may be a small price to pay for the awesome ride the game delivers.

It is understandable if you look at it through the lens of people that don't live, eat and breathe this hobby. I am super casual and very rarely buy pins. I don't keep up on every detail of things. Pirates wasn't even on my radar until after I played it at MGC and I didn't pay attention to all these details I'm now learning about. I just figured a very new pin would be easily available until I learned about all the details, hence why I'm feeling very disappointed and let down by JJP.
