This shortens the plunger travel so it doesn't whack the playfield, still gives a full whack against the ball. And if you ever repair the kicker, the nut falls out and you remember to toss it back in.
Or remove the screws holding the kicker, and plug the holes. Move the kicker bracket back a bit, make new holes and put screws back in.
