For me it is maybe a positive thing that not too much is used from the movies. In this way it could become a more general Pirates theme that can stand the test of time better than just something heavily leaning on the POTC theme.

I think of it like this: younger people nowadays do not know much about Elvira or what it stands for. That may be also true for younger people in several years regarding POTC. But they all will know pirates, just as they will know knights and dragons.

Also this frees the creative people at JJP to make it the best pirates theme they can and seeing what they did with previous games I am sure that I will not be dissapointed.

Having said that, I do feel that the title would be great to be in there, just because it is so awesome and really fits the pirate theme and it is timeless. No doubt however that David Thiel will do an amazing job with or without it.

Quoted from Psw757:

If Jersey Jack thought a generic pirate machine was the the way to go I’m sure that is what we would have.

That would be true (and might have happened) if most of the pinball crowd wasn't so hung up on a theme. A theme just sells because people know it. JJP has learned that with Dialed In. That is one great pinball machine but many people just discard it on behalf of the theme. Would the theme have been Sim City or something that is known worldwide many more people would gravitate to it.

I had the best example of that right here in my house as I had a friend over which did not care for DI at all. He was not even interested in playing it, but as he was here he of course did play it and kept playing it for some time. Now a week later he has one on order.

We should all remember that Medieval Madness is also themeless. Would somebody dismiss a MM because of the theme ? I do not think so. But what they do not know they do not like.

Quoted from SwimLaw:

The question is how many of these original buyers actually recognize that there is no franchise IP in the machine other than cabinet art pictures?

Wow, did you even look 2 minutes at the game ??? On the playfield there is the rotating map from the movies, you can choose from 20 (!!) different characters that are prominently featured in the movies, there is a effing Black Pearl on the playfield, the Dead Mans Chest is there, many callouts are from a character that is in all of the POTC movies (and he has a great Pirate voice).

There is much more than only cabinet art to remind you of POTC.

edit: there is even Jack's compass in there, really working showing you your hearts most wanted desire

Quoted from SwimLaw:

So, yeah, I will take that as a pretty good barometer that JJP didn't do near good enough with the theme on this one. (Of course, still holding out hope that what was seen at the expo was still very premature.)

Ok fair enough, but I do think there is more in the machine than just the cabinet art

Quoted from Asael:

If this Flipper would have been themed after „Monkey Island“ it would be an instant buy for me.

Why didn't anyone think of this ! This would make it probably the best pin ever (for me personally).

Quoted from aingide:

The one thing I’m wondering about is if someone with no rule knowledge can step up and still have a great time without being overwhelmed?

I think the display on the apron will help a lot with that. As Eric said in the interview, it acts like him or Keith guide you where to go. I see this as an excellent feature for people who do not play much games and are not into learning the rules.

Quoted from PinMonk:

Let's just pray the average ball times are nowhere near The Hobbit.

I want to comment on this, because a few weeks ago I had a pinball evening with guys coming over. We played all games and at one point we played every game except TH. One of the guys said: I don't want to wait for 20 minutes before I can play again.

But I prepared the game. Turned off all ball saves, made it a little steeper, set it up so the multiball were not as easy to get.

When we played it, it were the shortest games of the evening and we had so much fun with it and kept playing again and again.

I find that most of the Hobbits are set up badly. I was over at a guy that also own a Hobbit and when I played it, my first ball was longer and had a higher score than the best game I had ever gotten at my home. It was just set up flat and felt floaty and just all around slow, but then I found out all his games were set up like that.

Quoted from PinMonk:

I turned multiball difficulty up, had it set at 7.2 degrees, and sides wide open and it was WAY too LONG, still. Some games are just that way. Hobbit is one.

Can't argue with your experience, but try to disable the ballsaver. I did that because that is also the setting on the Directors Cut on Dialed In and it makes the balltimes so much shorter. Especially in multiball where the default ballsaver seems to last forever as you can easily start a new multiball with a new ballsaver during multiball.

Quoted from Pimp77:

Imagine LOTR or TSPP with no voice clips from the movies/show and only ONE actor giving the callouts!

Haha I read somewhere that TSPP in fact WAS only one actor !! But one that does more voices in the show. That is why you never hear Lisa or Marge saying anything.

All a lot of drama for nothing. Aurich was right on the money, if you want the movies, then buy the movies. A lot cheaper. When you are playing you will enjoy the game so much that you will never miss the movieclips and the callouts are from one of the main characters. That is more than can be said about TWD or even GB as Ernie Hudson was not one of the original ghostbusters.

edit: by the way: The Hobbit is a bad example, as there are no original callouts by original actors in that game. Just voice-alikes. So POTC is again better than that.

#3322 6 years ago
Quoted from Pimp77:

TSPP has at least 3 official actors: Dan Castelleneta, Hank Azaria, and Nancy Cartwright.
I would totally be happy with sound-alikes for POTC ala Gandalf in TH! Better than one official actor only.

Ok, I stand corrected, but IF they would do sound-alikes, there would again be others that would crap on that too. I am getting a little fed up with all the drama before even the software is finished.

The manufacturers just cannot win: hire all the official actors and the machine will be priced too high, get sound-alikes and get boooh'd for that, get one real main character and get crap for that too. Second example: Show the game early and get crapped on but get real life data on how to make the games better, or just show the machine very late and get crap.

Great review guys. I think these videos are the most enjoyable pinball related content ever, right up there with the PAPA tutorials, but those I watch for a different reason. For me the casual look and feel of the videos make them great, no need to go and overproduce them IMHO.

Quoted from ScottyC:

hahaha, all the complaining is soo funny. No one has money in this machine right now except JJP. This is the prototype process like it or not. I welcome the decisions they have made, so keep doing what you're doing JJP!

Not true. During the timeframe of the introduction there was one main distributor of JJP here in Europe and they have a non-refundable policy with a pre-payment of 1000 Euros.

If a feature of a game is so highly emphasized during the introduction, it stands to no reason that it would be scrapped later in the process, especialy as they were very ademant that rigorous testing had been applied to the reliability of the mech. It is not like some minor part of the machine was altered.
