My JD starting restoring itself to factory settings when I turn it on and showing a dot (need to set date, etc...). Attached are pics of the DMD message and what the machine has in lieu of regular batteries

I'm guessing that battery replacement (lithium) goes bad and needs to be replaced after a certain time? I have a remote battery holder bought a while ago, should I use it instead of what is currently there?

Yup. Clip and remove that battery and install your remote holder.

You can test it first if you want but I bet deadness is your issue.
