If there are still shots, we should declare victory

Multiple still shots of Jaws breaking shit = victory.

First up I wish these pinball manufacturers will start telling the IP owners to shove it up thei ass when they wont't cooperate!

It honestly surprises me they don't just establish some basic guidelines during the initial discussion, and if the license holder won't play ball like "no, you can't use your awesome in-house artist to draw stuff" just walk.

We know the games with more creative freedom sell better and have a better long tail. It makes economic sense to only pick licenses that let you make good games without handcuffs. Bond is cool, but if they picked something else that wasn't so strict nobody would know or care.

Isn't Star Wars the best selling Spike 2 game by a country mile? They're still pumping them out 6 years later

Quoted from JakePG:

I'm hoping the game is amazing, and then they retheme the layout in a game I can afford.

Yeah, just imagine if they got multiple shots of Jaws...and then maybe they strung them together at around 24 frames per second...then we'd be cooking with gasoline!

Cant wait to hear all the cool bond music:-

Living Daylights
A View to a Kill
Live and Let Die
License to Kill
Casino Royale
Moonraker

what else did I miss......

No clue. But Star Wars had hand drawn art and then got a different hand drawn version, so clearly not a license that fails that basic first question.

I think the thing missing from all this discussion about Bond 60th is consideration of the style of game it's intended to be. It seems like they've set out to give the game a look and feel that calls back to a 70's-80's type of game. So I would expect that styling to carry through to most elements of the game including use (or lack of use) of video clips, audio/callouts, and how deep or shallow the rules are.

I wouldn't expect a game like this that is aiming for a 70's-80's throwback styling to make use of a lot of modern pinball stuff like video clips and rule sets with paths to mini wizard modes and a final wizard mode plus some side objectives and strategies. Based on the information from Stern so far, I'm guessing this game is intended by design to be more straightforward, similar to games of the era it's being modeled after. But we'll see.

I can't even. If you're a true pinball player and not just someone who wants to show of to their friends or sit there and look at a bunch of lights, LZ destroys JJP GnR, it's not even close.

the already published ruleset does in fact include four multiballs, six villain modes, a dozen combos, a wizard mode, etc.

My loose understanding is Stern tried to do the artwork in house, I think Franchi was going to do it?, but they rejected his art sample and they used preapproved Disney artists to do the art based off the art layout by Stern. Then they redid the art package again with a different set of Disney approved artists for the people who hated the first art package. And I'm sure the R2D2 topper approval is a PTSD trigger to some people at Stern

Either way, it was just a comment about how a notoriously restrictive licenser can be worth dealing with if the property they own is valuable enough.

Yep, which is very similar to a STTNG or other games of that era.

I think a more apt comparison is like...Hoops.

I hope it's as fun as Hoops

Hoops is a great time. Just needs another two or three spinners...

#6465 1 year ago

I think in a year when the cornerstone code is done the two games will complement each other nicely

If you bought this game because you wanted a fast, fun single level layout with lots of ripped spinners and modern snappy flippers, yet with a quirky scoring reel and a more complex ruleset than other single levels, you will be happy you bought the game. This fits my description.

If you are expecting music, video assets, display animations, better art, theme integration, ramps, or cheaper pricing you will be disappointed. Or you will be happy you didn't buy the game and will continue to call the ones that did crazy.

Should be a fun stream!

Which would be cool. But for me, and I'm guessing a lot of people, I think the disconnect is getting a game as fun as Hoops (or STTNG or pick any other game you like from that era of coding) for $20K vs the game play you get in a Jurassic Park, Godzilla, or a lot of other games for far less $.

There's no right or wrong, but it shouldn't be surprising if a lot of people would gravitate more toward those other games over a Bond 60th.

EXACTLY!

I am happy I bought it. Works for me.

#6469 1 year ago

yeah I gotta be honest I would have been this excited about any new and limited elwin design. the theme is like the least important part of the game to me

wanna smash that captive ball

Quoted from EaglePin:

The rules look more basic than most 90's games.

Villain MB - Just hit the spinners a bunch

Gadget MB - Keep shooting the disc a bunch

Bond MB - Shoot everything to build up a progress meter and get a jackpot

Wizard Mode - The MB is basically just shoot everything for "big points"

Simple rule-sets are fun and some of my favorite games are early SS games with simple rules. I expect this game to be fun but comparing the code depth to games like STTNG is doing those games a disservice.

BondMBrules (resized).pngBondMBrules (resized).png
#6471 1 year ago

yeah i don't think it will be as deep as STTNG, by design. but you still have to qualify and start a lot of things to get to the multiballs, it's not as straightforward as Hoops, either.

#6472 1 year ago

Idk the ruleset looks extremely comparable to most 90s games IMHO. A few basic modes dedicated to the major playfield features, a few main multiballs, mini wizard mode multiballs for doing certain objectives, and a super wizard mode for doing it all.

I feel like people are forgetting what a typical 90s game ruleset actually looked like or how basic those modes tended to be.

#6473 1 year ago

probably be like...CFTBL level deep. but harder.

#6474 1 year ago

Let’s see 2022-60=1968… does this look anything like the ruleset of a Gottlieb wedgehead?, Bally Dogies? No it’s more system 11 than an EM. I would think at this point, the only retro thing going is the score reels and crappy movie poster artwork.

Couldn't agree more, but the disconnect and lack of engagement I imagine isn't obvious until the deals are already inked. That, and for many of these organizations, pinball just isn't that relevant. The B-team gets to manage the project and they are afraid to take risks and do any legwork to make the product great. Pinball isn't the cash cow it was in the 80's-90's. Now, the primary money makers are the manufacturers & distributors (Stern/CGC/JJP/Spooky). The licensing deals are worth a lot of money given the fairly low volume. Location play has definitely perked up in recent years, but it's still pretty small. If anyone has numbers, please share

Game like GNR and Rush get love because the band members grew up with pinball and in many instances take a personal interest. Slash is the most obvious rocker enthusiast, but there are many I'm sure.

What time is the stream on tonight?

#6478 1 year ago

The stream is likely not changing anyone's minds at this point. They know the designer, seen the layout and video/pics of it all. Even some rules. If folks didn't think it looked worth the money so far, I doubt the stream is going to change that. Nor is it gonna suddenly sell ton of units

#6479 1 year ago

At first I thought Stern would be nuts to not include video assets, but the more I think about it the more I agree with the last few comments about videos not matching this style of game. Couple that with the small data file, I'm betting no video assets. In Elwin we trust.

#6480 1 year ago

What's the link again for the stream??

They basically said no “video assets” in a roundabout way without actually stating it.

I’ve listened to the Elwin and Gomez interviews and they said the goal was to “have a retro type game with some modern elements.”

A screen in the middle of the playfield isn’t “retro”. It’s not out of the realm of imagination that video or clips would appear on an LCD screen. Thus, all the speculation

Code is done, you can already see the final version. Doubt there will be any surprises as well

#6483 1 year ago

Still seems like a waste to put the screen in the pf with little purpose, but I do think video clips would likely distract from the retro feel of the game. I do think it would be possible to implement video assets successfully. I could see ball locks or other times with the ball is not in play being a great way to handle it. People will bitch either way. Opinions and assholes.

#6484 1 year ago

The screen exists to give directions on what to do, since the back box is the dopey looking reels. It does have a purpose (the screen), just not the one that folks assumed it would have.

True but an old school 70’s style had neither. Shouldn’t need a screen to tell us what to shoot for.

The reality is it’s more for displaying the Insider Achievements. The IC Pancheco designed it

t-minus 25 minutes till the greatest pinball machine ever created

One chance to make a good first impression

#6496 1 year ago

So far in this stream is anyone seeing the value proposition for a $22k machine(with shipping and tax)? I do like the retro sound options.

#6497 1 year ago

looks super fun

#6498 1 year ago

“Most of these went over seas”…this game is not geared towards price sensitive shoppers.
