Hello Everyone:

I have a Stranger Things pinball machine and the ramp stopped going up and down. I’m fairly certain the Stern SPIKE 2 Dual motor control board went out since the chip on the board shows some damage (see photo). Unfortunately that board isn’t in stock anywhere so I’m wondering if anyone knows what the large chip on the board is? Since the chip on mine is damaged, I cannot read all the information off the chip to find a replacement. Plus I’m not sure where to start looking so I’m hoping someone is willing to point me in the right direction for either the board or chip.

I’ve never tried soldering a surface mounted chip before, but I’m assuming it’s doable with the right equipment. Best part is I might learn something and save some money too.

Thanks for any help on this.

Part Reference:
520-8418-00
Weight: 2 oz

Pinball Life has them in stock for $110:

EDIT: Wrong part number.

I’m pretty sure that’s a different board. It has a different part number and looks different unless it’s an aftermarket part. It appears basically the same, and the original board failed so??? I would prefer an after market board if they are designed better. Anyone know for sure if this is the correct board? I couldn’t find a reference for this part number from this part number to mine.

Thanks everyone!

You're right. I wasn't paying close enough attention when I posted that link. Different part number on the product page.

Thanks everyone. I ordered the chip, might have some questions before I try to solder it…

Might this be similar to the problems folks are having with the Rush node 10 boards? Also drives steppers and apparently can blow up spectacularly if it disconnects unexpectedly while powered up.

Anyone see where to get one of these yet?

I'd contact Borygard and see if he can repair it. The L6206Q seems to be the one in short supply, but there are places that have limited stock, so maybe he can fix it for you since he does node board repair. I'd PM him and ask.

I repaired one of these for my TMNT by replacing the chip after checking everything else on the board and not finding any cause of the chip blowing. It fixed the issue....but not for long. There must be something else on the board that is taking out the chips but everything checked ok.

I wonder how many other TMNT owners have experienced the same failure and a blown up L6202Q driver chip?

L6206Q Data Sheet.
I laughed out load when I saw that the chip included overcurrent protection. Perhaps that protection is a controlled explosion.

Just thought I'd post this link to the updated replacement board on pinball life. I just ordered this for my stranger things or tmnt boards in case they go out. In the notes it says this part number replaces the one referenced above. Currently they were 100 each so I grabbed 2.

It looks like the new board adds an electrolytic capacitor labeled C4.
