Quoted from mbaumle:

Just a friendly reminder that the Gene Wilder version was not really 1 to 1 with the original Roald Dahl book (hence the difference in movie name), whereas the Johnny Depp version is pretty much 1 to 1 with the book (adding some bits and pieces of backstory from the book's VERY lesser known sequel), and shares the same name. So I'm not sure I would consider the 2005 version a remake. More like a parallel, since the original film took much more creative liberties. I also think I read someplace that Dahl actually strongly disliked the original film.
Either way, as much as I wouldn't be personally interested in a pinball machine adaptation, I think it's a perfect theme choice for JJP's audience.

The Wilder movie was unquestionably hugely the superior of the two, but I'd be happy to see a JJP game based on the book.

GB was repeatedly said to be a half arsed attempt to pull the rug out from under DI, after details of it were leaked years before it launched. Hence a few layout similarities and the shitty Ecto Goggles vs Quantum Theatre.
I can't believe anyone familiar with both games and pinball generally would prefer or imply that GB of any description is a better game than DI. GB has all sorts of issues with its design, and some really boring, bad, buggy rules and code.

I love GB. Could use one more code polish but otherwise, great game...

I agree. I 100% prefer the original. It's funny to think that the original did not do well in the theaters, and wasn't really the hit the studio wanted/needed though. It only became super popular later in life.

#154 10 months ago

At the time does anyone remember the controversy over the ending of the original movie? It was so secretive somebody stole a copy just to know the ending before everyone else. At least that was what I remember about it.

Besides, at the manufacturing level, the cost differential for a headphone jack insert plate that matched what they have on WoZ and Hobbit is not that much - I checked into it with one of the chinese manufacturers I deal with once after someone gave me the cost excuse a couple years ago.

People wanted dollar bill validators AND headphone jacks. Also the custom door was more money. So, if they need the space for the validator, they have to put the jack elsewhere. And the only place it fit without interference is the lower left side. That's it, it's not complicated. Yet you can't seem to let this particular thing go and refuse to listen to reason.

I was in Vegas several months back. There's lots of new Willy Wonka slot machines in all the strip casinos. It's the original Willy Wonka.

I would suspect JJP would be doing the original.

Time will tell. Toy story originally was next, then flipped to Wonka, then back to toystory. Who knows. I'm excited for both either way, but toy story is a must have. Just hoping it has all the video and sounds rights unlike potc.
TS would make the most sense with a new movie release next year, and Wonka anniversary in a couple years. If they don't have the full assets on TS, then I can see Wonka next as they will have full rights on that, and can't do back to back games without assets.

The license is the deal. In the case here, at least, except for the first month Dialed In was out, Ghostbusters Prem destroyed DI earnings (and still does). Casuals love it.

I dont understand why people think Willy Wonka is a better theme than WOZ. It surely was not as popular a movie as WOZ was. Also, every woman that sees WOZ, especially the 75th anniversary machine wants one. It is a great way for any male collector to bring his female counterpart into the hobby and to stop the nagging about what a waste of money pinball is... Of coarse that is not the case with every female counterpart...

On another note, I would much rather see someone make a Nirvana game rather than making another GNR game. Just my opinion... Perhaps even an 80's greatest hits machine, or 90's greatest hits... maybe something interchangeable, or song packs you could buy via USB cards that could change the music and integrate into the game to change up some of the call outs and music....

I also think that although Toy Story is the more popular Pixar movie; The incredibles would be a better pinball theme... As long as it is not Cars(I would rather have a colonoscopy than see another Cars movie with my son after the 3rd one ...), or Finding Nemo....

#166 10 months ago

Yeah the Pixar connection and pinball... I can see a Buzz Lightyear machine... wait what was that stupid, plastic, POS-cracker jack toy on toothpick legs- battery operated- Christmas morning meltdown inducing- Earl Shibe $19.99 costing-picked it up at the gas station while coming home drunk from the company cristmas party- Daddy dont love you- Mommy don’t care- you’re just a poor backseat decision made 7 years ago- what did you expect? Twilight Zone?- broke the shooter rod off when you tried to plunge your first ball- made for children 4 to 6 yrs- your skills are way beyond this piece of shit- Merry Christmas, dear- Now maybe you can save all those quarters- But honey its Buzz Lightyear?!? Isn’t he your favorite?- Toy of the Year reject?

Yeah, thats the Pixar and Pinball connection I see coming our way.
Who’s building Toy Story, JJP? So WOZ + DI - (POTC-TH) + Pixar - The Incedibles = Toy Story: The Pinball Adventure?

#167 10 months ago

Willy wonka looks like Alice and Woz in male, imho.
This game could be greatly populated with awesome artwork for sure.
However, I prefer something different right now like Toy Story or GNR.

Next game will be yellow brick road version of WOZ. I love JJp but i dont see how they survive with putting out expensive games every year and a half. I just cant afford them anymore.

Incredibles pin would be incredible. My wife and kids would be all in on that one, which would be incredible.

I don't think the higher price is their issue honestly. It's manufacturing time. I personally have loved all the themes they have, and especially love the ones coming. I think they need to reveal a pin, and ship it within a month of reveal like stern. It would only take holding the next game back a bit until it's fully ready to get on that schedule. Probably and hopefully that's why no expo reveal this year.

I like jjp games better, and anxiously await the next release more than anything else, so I really want to see them get things booming so they can thrive in a competitive industry. I can't afford even one game a year regardless of which company, but I think a new jjp every year ready to ship at release is best for them currently. The more options available to purchase, the more orders coming in. Just got to get them out faster.

I think that is what they are doing this time around. The down side is that some prototype pins don't get played by just "mediocre" type players for a few thousand times to test things out very thoroughly for durability before production. Therefore, I volunteer to be a secret prototype tester for them and give them lots of feedback. I'll even do it for free and guarantee several games played per day. [full disclosure - I am a Test Engineer for vehicles for "my day job" and have to test things with prototype vehicles ... so I'm qualified.]

I'm going to need a bigger house soon if JJP pumps out more pins per year than they are now and keep up with their great designs and code.

I agree with those who say WW is next but I think TS would be a better choice because more potential customers could relate to it and the theme for TS is very family friendly. But, once again, my vote is for a Harry Potter based pin. Too bad that the licensors don't seem to be interested.

Harry Potter might be the best selling pin ever! But it will never happen.

Willy Wonka needs to come out first. Imo, it will end up blowing away all of JJP prior sales IF its up to JJP standards and I'm assuming it will be.

Jack was nice enough to show me some Pictures of the WOZ YBR Edition on his phone at IAAPA

The game looks really beautiful and there are some nice features that give this version a different feel.

If you are a buyer for the Pin, I think you will be very happy with what will be sold

PS, Jack also told me the Next Pin is Pats and is a Standard Body Style..

It's great to keep putting out newer versions of old games but they need to release NEW games with a bit more frequency.

Can there really be that many more Woz buyers left? Especially with what they are selling for on the secondary market.

If making WOZ’s helps keep the line going between New Titles, to me this is a good thing...

I am guessing it will be revealed at Texas. That is a year and a half since POTC reveal!

For me to have any interest, needs to be narrow body.

Also, it's all about how the golden tickets are integrated into the game.

I hope JJP have been creative, as it is a marketing gimme to use golden tickets when promoting this game.

I mean, who doesn't want to find a golden ticket??!

After the big engineering mechs failure of POTC, I’m waiting JJP in that department for their next game.
I have no interest in Willy wonka theme but I will pay attention if JJP has highly raised the bar in engineering mechs

Lets use spider sense or common sense here! Toy Story 4 will release June 21st, 2019. Do you really think they're going to release Toy Story before the HYPE of the film. BTW Tom Hanks owns pinball machines as well... so I'm thinking Toy Story is a summer game not a spring game. Furthermore if you're speculating that the next game is NOT a wide body, then I would again assume Toy Story would be a wide body collector type game.

Furthermore JJ has been working on releasing Pirates for well over a year and a half. So lets think about that for a second ... have you ever heard the saying its possible to walk and chew gum? So I think its safe to assume that JJ was trying to finalize Pirates while working on 2 maybe even 3 other titles at the same time? So with that being said then Toy Story would seem to be a game that you'd try and finish by Summer 2019 and whatever other title they would release would be out late spring like at the Texas Pinball Festival March 2019.

So my guess would be they probably have been working on a couple other titles while trying to finish Pirates. If they're to ONLY release ONE pinball game clearly Toy Story summer 2019. If you think they might be in the home stretch of another game within 3 or 4 months I would bet against Toy Story.

I'm merely using common sense here and Jersey Jack has to create more machines faster, so I'm guessing two or more games are in the works just like at Stern. As for Guns and Roses if they do that game I would bet that is a standard pinball game and that to could be nearing completion who knows. I'm just using common sense here to figure this out not based on anything Jack said to people at IAAPA.

The big themes like Toy Story, Harry Potter or anything else big will probably get the wide body, while other titles will get a standard. At the end of the day these companies have to make a profit, so turning out more games faster is probably on JJ radar I would guess. I'm thinking with the success of Dialed In that you'll see a mix of wide body and standard going foward. That is my guess.

JJ in my view makes the best themed games on the planet. So if they make Toy Story, Willy Wonka, Guns N Roses, or somehow gets their hands on Harry Potter which I'm sure they will...awesome right?

Too bad JJ couldn't have been the one to do Star Wars right?

So whatever their next game is if its coming out this spring I would bet against Toy Story because that movie isn't until June 2019. You'd want to release that game during or after the wave of Toy Story media. Now that is only common sense.

Did it ever cross your mind that as JJ builds their experience, their team, networking system, part suppliers, distribution and more that they could at some point be in a position to produce more than one game every year and a half? I would bet its not super profitable releasing games so far apart. I would bet you'll see more standard games come from JJ with a mix of epic wide bodies. Again that is my assumption.

But here is what I'm betting the house on... JJ was working on several titles while working on Pirates. I'm betting you will start to see at least 2 games a year from here on out from JJ. I'm also betting that you'll start to see 2 games a year from Chicago Gaming.

All these companies do not have the experience of Stern who's producing 3 or 4 games a year. But these other companies can get to 2 game a year and I'm telling you I think that is exactly what you'll see.

Do you really think Chicago Gaming was messing around with Monster Bash and didn't have another game being developed right beside it?

I hope you see the point. So the main point here is if JJ can release a game between NOW and Texas Pinball I'm betting it won't be Toy Story because Toy Story 4 is June 2019. Who wouldn't want to plan that game for a release around when that movie comes out. If you think JJ can't walk and chew gum then bet on Toy Story June 2019. If you really think that Toy Story won't be a wide body, which I woudln't bet on, and your sources tell you the next game isn't a wide body then I would think you'd see another game between now and June 2019.

Again this me using common sense.

Jack's been trying to get on a 2 machine a year schedule for the last 2 years - at least. Pirates really messed that up, just like Hobbit did as well. Pinball is hard.

WANTING to do something hard and achieving it are two different things. Jack'll get there, but his timeline and reality are often at odds.

Me. Too close together to have the same designer on two in a row at that level.

Listen, if JJP pulled a fast one and secured Pixar licensing deals over the dead bodies of those people at Stern handling the SW account and Disney reps, they must have hit them with the “we charge more so we can pay more for the license” bullshit that just keeps hiking the costs of games up and up.

If Roger Sharpe were dead, he would be rolling in his grave right now. Costs and production numbers of current pins can not support the licensing fees that video game manufacturers can offer, and that is the reason a lot of licenses do not end up on pinball machines. You need a savy, industry tried and true pinball celebrity/realist to go in there and teach them that pinball licensing is not how you make money in Hollywood. You make money in Hollywood by putting butts in theater seats, and the only way to do that is with marketing and recognition. So lets talk about what money is on the horizon, and where that money will come from, and how best to use it in the pinball world.

Mature franchises, like POTC, or BTTF, or even Star Wars, or Wonka currently don’t have a direct tie in with a current film, so the marketing potential of a pin title is not that appealing to the owners of the IP. You come in saying you want to put their IP on a pinball machine and you tell them you will sell a maximum 4000 units at $100 per machine, that barely pays the lawyer fee to read and approve the contract. These people are used to seeing a video game maker walk in, saying we want to put your IP on a commercial console game and sell 2 million units at $3 a game, and then they start listening.

So for a non tie in, I would think JJP did well acquiring the POTC license, and hopefully maybe Wonka. I don’t see JJP getting Toy Story unless it is a tie in and they really did outbid Stern, and so June 2019 would be my guess... except the confidence level of delivering on time would make me cautious to trust JJP to deliver it with complete or near complete code.

Prognosticating on TS or WW, my money would be on WW before TS, only because Stern has a prexisting relationship with Disney/Star Wars license which would cloud a Pixar title going to JJP.
