I purchased a new coil this week from PBR. It’s a Gottlieb A-9736 which is a replacement for the R20-5. I installed it tonight and noticed there isn’t any space between the coil and the actuating plate. Without the space the plate can’t move the switches. I measured the two posts that stick out of the coil and found they stick out too far. Is there anyway to fix this or do I need to get another one?

are you certain it's installed in the right direction? the coil lugs are opposite the plate in the original pic. but they're on the same side in your installation pic.

I didn’t notice that until you pointed it out. Another difference between coils. The coil is attached to the bracket with a brass screw. The hole for the screw is only on one side so there isn’t any way to install it backwards. Although if anyone can I’m game.

can the core be removed and flipped?

I would call Steve and ask him,he is the Gottlieb Expert. The thing should be right, its Branded and not a knockoff.

that coil is fine to use as the terminals are on the opposite end, that is normal for a PBR 9736 coil. What you need to do is bend the actuating plate stop post back a little to open up the gap to get the required gap with regards to the actuating plate and coil core. Remove the coil and use a large pair of pliers one jaw on the actuating plate side of the post and other jaw on the opposite side and bend it slightly back. I do it all the time when replacing this coil and works great.

Thanks for the response. I’m not sure exactly what I’m supposed to bend. After I remove the coil do I bend the part that the coil screws into or the stop on the other side?

I bent the arm that attaches the coil to the bracket. It bent easily and I have good clearance and switch movement. Thanks for all the help.
