Hi Everyone,

My brother and I had a discussion the other day whether The Wizard of Oz deserved a higher ranking than where it sits today at #20. In our opinion, we both agree that it should. I myself would rate it in the Top 10.

Our thoughts for the "not as high ranking" were due to multiple factors such as a unappealing theme to some, light board issues, mechanical parts breaking after minimal play, trolling reviews of those who never even played the game, etc.

What are your thoughts? Would you still rank the game the same way you did four to five years ago? Does it deserve a better ranking today if you just played it for the first time? Does it deserve Top 10 in your opinion?

I appreciate anyone and everyone chiming in. All opinions welcomed.

**Side Note: I accidentally fired off this post without adding a few more options in the poll. I was going to add Top 100 or outside the Top 100. My apologies.

Nope.

For me it is not and I own an LE. I don't know if it is the fact I am a shitty player, it is a wide body, or theme but I just can't get into it. If I wouldn't have bought it with my dad and waited 3 years for it, it would be gone. As is, it is the least played game in my collection. I want to love it but I just can't get into it. I am still waiting for that ultimate theme/game play from JJP that just puts them head and shoulders above stern and I just haven't seen that combo quite yet.

#4 5 years ago

It's a really good game. It's definitely Top 10 in terms of presentation: toys, sound, theme integration, etc.

But if I could only own 10 games, I don't think it would make the cut. One of the main reasons is that I only tend to play it once or twice before moving on to something else. It could be primarily because it's long playing? I think the rules are good, but definitely not Top 10 all time good. I don't find there to be much nuance...just start a multiball and then try to stack in the others.

It’s a pretty game with tons of code but feels like it only has two shots. Not too 10 worthy

#6 5 years ago

i think its def a top 10. one of the best ever made. blows mm and monster bash away.

#7 5 years ago

It is a GREAT game. Amazing, technically astounding, packed, and fun! But the problem is there are SO many others which are just as amazing. Few new games have approached the greatness of the 90s DMD games, so being in the top 20 is pretty great

#8 5 years ago

It’s a top 10 game in terms of looks!

Are you sure you’re talking about the same game? 2 shots?

#10 5 years ago

i think its def a top 10, i liked it much better than mm or totan or adams family. dialed in is even better!

#11 5 years ago

wonderful game, better than most in the top 10, hands down!

#12 5 years ago

It's a Top20 for me.

But as to reasons why the average score might be skewed lower, one comes to mind. It is based on when a person last updated their review. The code on WOZ progressed very slowly, so if you rated the game based on less than version 1.91 software, you missed seeing lot of potential game. I'm sure another release on the way to 5.?? was a breakthrough point too. People could wait to review a game until after code was considered complete, but if a pinball machine manufacturer releases a game, it should be complete and they should be jumping through hoops to get it there. But the point is everyone is impacted by the version of code at the time they give their review. And unless reviews are updated after big software deficiencies are addressed , the ratings are potentially less than 100% accurate. Haha.

In my edited post, I mentioned that I submitted my post too early by accident, not allowing myself to add a few more options on my poll.

What is your "option D?"

Yeah, that was my fault. I was going to have Top 100 and Outside Top 100 as D & E options, but I accidentally hit the Enter button on my keyboard.

OK, but how does it compare to MM and Monster Bash? Or TOTAN or Addams for that matter?

top 300 now we are taking

It's not in my top 10 but my name isn't pinside

I think it's under rated at 20. I've owned a lot of the pins in the top 20 and really think it's better than quite a few. I just sold LotR ranked higher and believe that Woz is better. (but that's just IMO).

I like the rules, lighting, sound that seem to make a lot of the older pins look old.

#26 5 years ago

Top 100. For some reason I don’t enjoy woz and can’t play it more than once.

#27 5 years ago

I believe it should be. The code took years to get finalized. Remove all the early votes from those first few years and start as it is coded now and I think it lands in the top ten. Same for TWD.

#28 5 years ago

Had one here for three years and I can honestly say that I would not put WOZ in the top 100. TOM, TOTAN and DI are all above WOZ in the Top 100 and I feel the same about them also.

As in none of them belong in the top 100?

I agree

#30 5 years ago

I’ve had 11 of the top 20, and I’d still put WOZ at the top 2 or 3 of all time. Anything I play now gets compared to WOZ. That game set the bar so high for pinball that most new pins are just meh (imho).

#31 5 years ago

Top 10 to play, bottom 10 to maintain. I could nitpick the GI or parts of the art I don't like, but I think it's an absolute joy to play both competitively and casually. I totally get why some people hate it though. It's huge, slow, dark, the ball is frequently on mini playfields, it's often not 100% working, shooting the flashing arrow isn't really a possibility, etc.

I think any reviews on early code are perfectly valid. If you sell an unfinished $7000 thing, people can give their opinions on it the time you play it and shouldn't be required to revisit their opinion whenever you change it. Same goes for video games that get released broken and potentially fixed later. People should review what's in front of them, not the potential of what's in front of them.

WOZ is an amazing machine, I owned one in the past and have missed it ever since I sold it plus it’s only gotten better!!! I just ordered a WOZ Ruby Red 75th Anniversary today and can’t wait to get it! Top 10 IMHO.

#34 5 years ago

Luckily bought one last year after the code was polished.

I’ve owned 12 of the top 20 and put Woz in top 3 maybe number one if I’m being honest.

I agree

Except for Woz. The other 3? No way

I had to look up Tom and Totan, those dinosaurs, it’s been so long that anybody cared

#36 5 years ago

I like the theme, but hated playing the game. Outside top 100 for me.

#37 5 years ago

Definitely in the top 20. Wizard of oz is an innovative pin with its lcd screens and color changing leds. I remember the first time I saw one, I was amazed, wow 5 flippers!! I currently own Dialed In and the Hobbit, maybe one day I’ll own a wizard of oz.

#38 5 years ago

I would give it in the Top 20 because I'm sure if I had 20 pins this would be one of them. However, there is easily 10 pins I would rather have. Visually and audibly it is amazing. Game play was not as good for me, but that may improve with more time. Even if I never warmed up for I would still have it because it really captures people.

What more can you ask? Woz is definitely one of the all time best. I can understand some may not care for the theme, but it's an American classic theme no matter. It's fun, beautiful, and challenging. I personally think jjp haters effected the ranking. It should be higher and I'd take it over most the top 10 machines easily. Everyone has their own opinion though and that's fine.

Looks wise and game features yes, but gameplay no just slow to me

Not personal at all. I have no vetted interest either way. I'm just saying while theme can make or break a deal, it shouldn't take away from the overall game. Like I said, Not a fan of Metallica, love the game. Not a fan at all of Iron Maiden, enjoyed the game. As you said, just an opinion.

I must have misunderstood your comment since you wrote "weak" before it. It's all good.

These debates are stupid. Some people like chocolate, other people like peanut butter. Play what you like, who cares what other people think.

WOZ either you love it or you hate it. I had a RR and while I must say, it was the most beautiful game I have ever owned, just could not get into it. I really tried. It was pinball overload! Way to much going on at one time. I understand that some folks like the pinball overload. I have to have some flow and some control not to mention a grasp on the rule set. Not my favorite theme but I got over that. I think a lot of people want the WOZ experience and that makes it a top 20 at least. Are there 20 games I would have before a WOZ? Yes

Exact opposite for me

#50 5 years ago

I think the theme is great, build quality any features and rules great. The game play is different than my other games but so is TZ, I mean don’t want to have too many games that play like that but for one it’s a great change.

Anyway, the movie is easily one of the greatest of all time. While the movie was a musical that makes some people tune out. The story is comparable to Star Wars or LotR (seriously).

I’d argue that story of Wizard of oz could be remade as an adventure blockbuster movie (without the musical and dancing) and be great.

It’s not a stretch to compare SW to Woz. It’s just the musical and dancing some people don’t care for and the pinball machine doesn’t have any of the songs from the movie it was redone with an instrument music score.
