I just picked up this great pinball and I love it so far.

I mean $260 is a little bit of money and I know my ask is subjective.

Does anyone have any real pictures? Maybe from the side and close up and from a distance?

I really think I want it but do I really need it?

thanks
Gary

Hobbit topper? Jjp didn't release one but maybe their were a few after market ones? Regardless I'm not a topper person as they really don't add much to the gameplay imo.... even if they are game activated you rarely have time to look up and see them while playing.

#3 4 years ago

What topper are you talking about? Got pics? My hobbit looks like it’s missing something next to my woz.

#5 4 years ago

He must be referring to this one from Laserific. I personally don’t see the value in something like this. That money can be better spent elsewhere.

I like toppers in general, but only have one on a few of my games. I really prefer those that add a new artwork element to the game rather than duplicate the backglass artwork. Thus, the laseriffic topper for the Hobbit hasn't really interested me.

#7 4 years ago

The laseriffic one is very nice in person. If I had a Hobbit i would definitely have one, but I’m one of those weird “topper people”.

#8 4 years ago

It’s ok but I’m not digging it enough to buy one. Wish it would have just came factory with one

#9 4 years ago

The original sword one that didnt make it into production was very cool.

Id buy it.

The Hobbit hut one with the door that opened when you started a game and closed at the end of the game, that Lorenzo was working on would have been great.

Sad that one never got made.

Yeah that "bag end" one was the best!

#15 4 years ago

Thanks guys. Yes, the laserific one is what I was referring too.

It lights up and has Bilbo pointing the sword right at you with a back light. Kinda cool! But is it $260 cool?

I guess that was the "point" of my question. It is a subjective question I understand.

I just added the gold coin flipper toppers and lighted flipper buttons tonight so I for sure like to mod out my pins.

Just not sure this one is worth the money.

#16 4 years ago
Quoted from Huskerfan:

But is it $260 cool?

Depends on what you think.

If it's cool to you, then you can't really put a price on it. What makes YOU happy ?

If it's parked on top of your game and you like it. Then I'd get it.

IMO, the Hobbit Laseriffic topper is one of the best. For $260, that one is a no brainer. Just know that once you start buying toppers, you’ll want them on all of your games. I love them!

damn that gameroom has a lot of light in it. Hope you invested in UV reduction for those windows or you will have some fading going on.

There is never direct sunlight on any of the pins, believe me I would not allow that. On the other hand, I don’t want the house to feel like a dungeon or all the games covered in blankets all the time.

my short answer is "no".

If it actually comes with the machine (like a Batman 66 LE) ok, fine..it's part of the package. (and it looks awesome)

I have a Munsters LE...there is no frickin way I would pay $400 plus for that ..and it always has some kind of issue anyways. Nice concept, but lousy build.
Lots of guys tinker with it to get it operating correctly..shouldn't have to do that. I have a $29 spooky raven clock from cracker barrel that lights up..talks..and the raven pops out the swinging door...every time. no issues. go figure.

Not a topper guy unless that is the way it comes..(like my MBRLE)

But, like someone mentioned before. It's what you like for the $$..Great...if you are you are thinking of buying with the additional thought that if if you ever would sell it, you could get that money back..not likely. Again if it was supposed to come with a topper and you didn't have it when you sell, well that could actually could decrease the value...but, a 2nd party topper? no.

#21 4 years ago

I would say no as it just replicates characters that already exist on the playfield and backglass. Personally I'm not a fan of toppers that are just theme logos / characters that already exist on the games cabinet and or playfield art.

The best toppers in my opinion are those that are interactive and are coded well in terms of interacting with multiple game modes. Unfortunately a vast majority of interactive toppers have little code created for them. The Ghostbusters topper is one of the rare exceptions as thanks to the final code update it's used in multiple modes, shots, and in the attract mode.

#22 4 years ago

For a couple of layers of flat plastic and an LED strip...no way is it worth it.

#23 4 years ago

I have it and though a bit expensive, I think it's worth it if you like toppers for aesthetic reasons.

I shot a video of modding my Hobbit Smaug LE and unbox the topper and install it as well.

Detailed Topper unboxing and install @ minutes 18:00-32:00.

Hope this helps with your decision,

Steve

Didn't you buy a led strip for the back box for like $100 *cough* *cough*

Instead of buying one big shitty mod, I prefer to buy a bunch of little shitty mods instead.

Off topic, but did you do anything to the lighting in your backbox? The picture looks much more warm and natural tones than mine. My lighting makes everything blue and washed out.

#27 4 years ago

I wasn't a topper guy until I bought AFMRLE. Thats an incredible interactive topper....all others I've seen are a bit disappointing ...

#28 4 years ago
Quoted from Hammerhead:

Same here on my Hobbit. Consequently, I've figured my next Hobbit mod (before any topper), if any, will be a backbox lighting improvement like that shown in this video by Lermods. I'd leave it set on the selection that best brings out the warm colors in the translite artwork that are otherwise lost with the stock JJP lighting.

#29 4 years ago

even non direct light fades games. Reflections off floors, walls and ceilings can project UV light to fade out reds. Takes longer than direct light, but can fade nevertheless.

There's actually two separate mods in there, one (which I have) that lights up the artwork beside and below the monitor and the other which gives you RGB options to light up the area above. I'm not a fan of all those lighting effects personally and would just like a solution that provides a warm white light as opposed to what comes from the factory. I've seen people add an amber film over the existing led strip to give it a warmer look. That seems like a good option. I have to look into that.

Yep - thanks. I kind of like the look of the side LEDs as well and have been thinking of adding them to my Pirates too.

An amber strip would be worth checking out for the top portion!

#32 4 years ago

Yeah, good eye! I have the amber film over the LED strip and it gives the backbox a nice warm glow. I still need to do the Lermods side translite illumination mod to finish it off. My Hobbit is pretty pimped out, such a beautiful game. The bronze cabinet armor is just insane. Love this pin, it’s not going anywhere.

Looks great! Where did you buy that film to cover the LED strip? I've seen it on Amazon but I'd have to buy a pack which would be a waste for the most part.

Mine too. There's a couple of mods I'd like to still add yet though. Hell, I'll even probably end up getting the Laseriffic topper too!

Although I wasn't initially a huge fan of the game due to other factors, I can honestly say that I have ALWAYS considered it to be one of the most beautiful games ever made. The playfield artwork and lighting effects still dazzle me to this day and I'm very happy to have finally acquired one within the past year!

My favourite Hobbit mod. Not into sticky taping little dolls on pinball machines, but i like this.

#38 4 years ago

Not into toppers unless the game was sold with one.
IMHO the two best Hobbit mods are the Throne of Erebor and the LED strips that light up the 3 dark sides of the back glass. Both look stock.

#39 4 years ago

I’m not sure, the previous owner installed the film before I bought it. I’ve added a ton more mods to the game since. I don’t know what other mods I can do other than the Lermods translite surround lights and I believe someone made extra barrels that could be added if someone knows the source. I won’t be doing a PinWoofer system on this game as the sound is already excellent as is. The Lermods trough and upper playfield LED strips look amazing, I highly recommend them!

I don't know, but I would certainly be asking if it's "coronavirus-free"

You guys are great. I’m gonna contact a couple of you to see where you got your other mods.

Lorenzo was working on it. No idea if it got past drawings. You could send him a PM and ask. He's on Pinside - lllvjr
