The future of local shopping will likely be much different than today. I can see moving to a system where you don't actually pay for anything at a register. You just pick up your items and leave the store. A system will keep track of what you picked up and will bill your account accordingly. These types of systems already exist, its just a matter of when they are implemented for this type of use.
