    Quoted from curban:

That’s it, I’m putting a tip jar out next time! (Not sure where I’m putting it though)

I was ahead of my time. In the early 1990's I always had a can on the counter for various scams. More of a joke than anything.

I'd put a picture of a decrepit kid or homeless person on it. The label would be they were so poor they couldn't afford more tools, Muffy bears, new speakers, etc.

Who knew years later it would be considered tipping.

I noticed the Chipotle phone app now lets you tip when you use the app to order.
Last weekend, I tipped 20% to see if it would get me a better built burrito, it did not ....

    Quoted from ForceFlow:

It probably goes a little something like this:

... Sprinkle in a little greed and selfishness, leading to...hey, those people over there are benefiting from this thing, why can't I too?
Then that leads to a lot more of that thing, resulting in someone later saying: ok guys, it's getting a little weird now. The thing is everywhere now, and it's starting to cause some harm.
    And then leads to....

...Fear. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.

    Quoted from girloveswaffles:

    Fear leads to preparedness.
Anger leads to necessary life changes.
    Hate leads to honesty.

We can’t just push negative or difficult emotions aside. They have to be squarely and honestly dealt with or we deny our own humanity.

    Is tipping humane?
Or is tipping a con job?

Not according to Yoda. He said it like girlloveswaffles

…and quit ‘trying’. There is no try.

Yoda originally only wanted to train the more sedate Leia and leave Luke alone, fearing the natural tendencies of the Tatooine farmboy who rose from very humble beginnings to become one of the greatest Jedi the galaxy has ever known.

    So Yoda was wrong

Yoda didn’t want to train Luke because the Force was already in balance. Yoda & Obiwan vs Palpatine & Vader.
Training Luke would have upset that harmony in the Universe.
In reference to the topic at hand: Obiwan was always a good tipper and Yoda never picked up a check at any of the Space Frog Restaurants.

I curbside ordered 8 bags of concrete mix during covid from Home Depot and when it was brought to my truck the employee loaded it into my truck even though I offered help. Tried to tip but he refused, not allowed I was told.

Quoted from theadicts77:Nearly lost it when I went to see the Phillies in Milwaukee last summer and a machine asked me to leave a tip for my diet coke at a station that was running with zero staff and only had self checkout options. This is some next level shit straight outta an Orwell novel.

It gets worse - There was a person in charge of overseeing the location - either a Union Employee or a non-profit volunteer making 10% of the sale price for their group.

Not really a tipping item but saw this for first time last weekend.
My guess is they haven't had new menus with increased prices printed yet.

Haha. One form of “tipping” that I’ve been successful with is at concerts. I bought two “cheap” $50 seats. I “tipped” the usher $20 and he let us sit in the $100 a seat section for the show. So, when the tipping is clearly bribery, it works. When you put $5 in the jar at Chipotle, your burrito doesn’t improve.

I personally don't really care about tip jars on counters similar how I am happy to tip gracefully for services. The tip jar on the counter is a lot different than being pressured to tip at the point of sale with predetermined (and usually quite high) amounts. Yes, you can put in a custom amount but are you really going to go through all that extra effort while the line waits behind you and the person ringing you up is looking you up and down? Or you're asked to tip at the POS before your order is finished (or while putting in your order online) so now you've got to risk your quality of service? At least with the jar I can throw my change in I don't want to carry around, or give a nice tip if I feel its deserved, or at least not be physically pressured to do anything.

I like to tip the Starbucks ladies because they're young and it seems like a fast paced job.
I only go there once a week though

With all the crazy shit we have to digest these days…I’m surprised there isn’t a ‘tip’ prompt on the self-checkout registers at Walmart!

The tip is free groceries. I've seen people fake scan and then walk out with a full cart.

    #372 1 year ago

One way I avoid the tip % on a trip to Jersey Mikes is just bring cash and change. Calculate the tax in my head and at the register I have the bill figured out in advance and have the exact amount in cash. Boom, hand them the exact amount in cash the second they tell me my total. The amazed look on the cashier's face is priceless.

Working at McDonald's in the 1970's for $2.10 an hour has its advantage. I had to add the order up on paper and add tax from the tax chart from memory. Then plug the amount into a cash register.

Retail sucks. My kid, working part time in college, was pulling in anywhere from ~$20 to ~$40 per hour at a f'ing bagel shop because of tips. She didn't work a lot of hours, but in school and wanting some fun money, that's the way to do it, not that minimum wage no tip shi*...

They’re only free for that person, that shrinkage is figured in to the rest of the products that people are paying for. I have mixed feelings about self-checkout

I love it personally. I put everything in the cart with the UPC visible and then hit everything with the gun in about 30 seconds. There are absolutely some people that shouldn't be using it, since they can't follow simple instructions. Stores need to actually check that you actually scanned everything in your cart. They don't and that's causing plenty of shrink.

A good 25 years ago when we were all starting out in life, a buddy worked at Kroger and said "tomorrow is my last day, so if you need some groceries come on up". So my girlfriend and I load up 2 carts to the top - he scanned about every 5th thing. He rings it up and it comes to like $21.

The person behind us was looking at these 2 full carts, and real loud my buddy says "Man, those coupons really add up!"

That's what happens when stores get rid of all their cashiers to save a buck. Ain't automation grand!

    #378 1 year ago

side note but so much rampant stealing now some stores have 'counters within' if you want small items they are behind a counter like a pharmacy kiosk where you pay at that counter to get the items.

Got gas this morning and the first prompt from the pump was asking if I wanted to donate to St Judes.

Ummm, no thanks - actually just here to get gas.

Our Circle-Ks have been installing a smart checkout system for the last year or so. You put your shi* on a platform and it identifies it without scanning a UPC. It constantly misidentifies or adds extra items causing a lot of frustration. Why they thought they could do it better than anyone else is beyond me.

I think it work great! Scans the $5.50 Orlando Sentinel as the $1.50 Sun Sentinel. But then again, not sure if it’s even worth $1.50.

Okay, got to disagree there. I wouldn't be so quick to blame the people that have to use the systems.
There is a huge flaw in self checkout. Each system is not consistent with their hardware, instructions and operation. So going from one store to another may not be the same experience. Even Self serve gas pumps have this problem, but to a MUCH lesser extent. Plus when there is a problem, you have to have someone take care of it for you. I had one double scan an item once, and there was no way to remove the item.
Then when there is a problem with one of these terminals, whether it's the customer or the terminal, the line gets backed up. I have walked out on purchases in some stores that have these systems for that reason. I also don't like that most of the terminals are not cash friendly.

This was not in the jar, this was on the app so they saw the tip before they actually started making food.

I'm all for hacks and deals to save money, but I'm not doing anything like that. There's a camera right on ya and now that AI is involved, it's not so labor intensive to figure out who's not paying what they should be. In Wal-Mart they even use AI to watch the items you pick up as you shop. Hell, I think it even uses facial recognition to ID you while you are shopping.

One of the Livonia, Michigan Costco's added six self-checkouts aboot five years ago. I thought it was great. A few months later they were gone. I asked what happened and was told rampant theft was why they got rid of 'em.

Here in Vegas, where there are so many crooks, con-men, con-women and idiots; all Costco's have them. Watched a guy short scan some landscaping lights at the Henderson location today. He was ahead of me at the checkout and in the exit "make a black line on the receipt" line. Sure as hell, the little old lady noted the discrepancy and asked him aboot it, he shrugged his shoulders, she hollered for backup, the store admittung card checker behind her pressed a button on the wall. Within seconds, two goons, big guys, magically appeared and escorted him to the office area. Before we had our car loaded, a Henderson cop Suburban arrived. Don't mess with Costco!
35 miles away in California, he could walk away scott-free though.....

I'm starting to learn these things and they are pretty awesome. Only issue is beer still needs an employee to OK it so I just end up going to them anyway.

Replaced by the phone app whihc is much quicker and easier. Well Sams Club (Pace) anyway. Livonia is right next to Reddog Mi; what a shithole.

Ah, Pace Membership Whorehouse, a division of Kmart, sold to archrival WalMart at a huge loss. Antonini's folly, along with Builder's Square.

Are you old enough to remember Warehouse Club? They had better prices and brands.
And then Meijer's Ill-fated "Source Club". The Westland location didn't last a year.....

I am confused. Should I start tipping my pinball distributor when they finally deliver the pinballmachine I ordered, or is that part of their job and included in the 10k i pay?

You can't do that with the self-checkout machines in grocery stores & walmart in my area. The bagging area is weight sensitive, and if you don't put the items on it after 2-3 items, it halts scanning additional items until you set them there. Big box hardware stores here don't seem to have that feature on their self-checkout machines, though.
