I just finished the latest spooky pinball podcast and i now have a bad taste in my mouth about stern. I feel everything chuck said i totally agree with, "thats just business" is what cold hearted people say when they walk all over nice people in order to make a few bucks. Spooky will survive im sure, but when you mess with a business that small, your messing with someones family. If stern did that to my family, id be up in arms. And the thing that really gets my goat is they did it for no reason!!! They wont even make this theme, they threw money away just to stab the emerys in the back. And all of that was after chuck handed stern a GOOD licence on a silver platter. If stern hurts spooky they are deliberately hurting pinball.

For those who still think that you can do whatever you want in order to make a few bucks and call it "that's just business" i want to remind you that stern is very unlikely to even do anything with this theme. They spent money for the sole fact of taking a shot at spooky. And that was done as a thank you. Thats an attack in my eyes.

    Quoted from Whysnow:

    Spot on 100%
Stern cares about noone bu their bottom line. Many of the people in charge don't even care about pinball or the people.

Ive always had a love/hate feeling with stern, on one hand they single handedly kept pinball alive, but they did that with paying VERY low *Bleep* and making crap games.

I appreciate your passion, but at the end of the day Stern will do what they need to do to protect their company. I own titles form both companies and even though I hate that it was done to Charlie I hope he will see that sometimes it is best to leave your passion under your hat.

Please explain to me what they really have to gain by this move? Did you hear how it all went down? Stern guy walked in on the middle of a meeting!!!! That's a huge dick move. Everyone knows they are the biggest name in the game, do they need to swing "IT" around and slap people in the face with it? That was an attack, please prove me wrong. I'd like to enjoy stern again.

    Quoted from kst8cat:

Can you bring us up to speed on what exactly Stern did? So they purchased a license to prevent Spooky from acquiring it? What license was it?

A stern person walked in on a meeting with spooky and TOHO(Godzilla)/(The Emery family drug of choice) and just basically outbid The smallest name in the game just to do it. Stern could have at least waited till after the meeting!?!?!?!? am I right?

    Quoted from Whysnow:

Pretty sure pinball would have been just fine without stern. I think pinball stayed alive despite stern and i dispise how they run their business on the backs of the hard working poor. Go read some of the old eddit threads from previous stern employees if you want a eal look athow dark it ison the inside.

ummmmmm I wish that was true.... Who was making Pins during the "DARK YEARS", other then stern? do you really think someone would have stepped into a dead market? Who whould have had the money to "start" the market back up again? Deeproot? lol. but yea I've heard some of the horror story's of what's its like to work for old Gary.

    Quoted from thirdedition:

My question in this is why would TOHO not go with Spooky? I mean it takes two to tango. I think it is crappy on Stern's part, but yeah.

TOHO is in the money making business. This was a license meeting, The people in charge of any License have one goal, make as much money as you can.

This means the "original Theme" is and will be making a big comeback!!! Thank God!!! Please no more Butt Rock Themes!!!

Like Lord of the Rings and Spiderman and Pirates? And what do you know about pinball factory wages? Can you spare us the baloney virtue signaling?

Thats 3 out of how many? Im not aloud to say the W word, but if u dont belive "us" do a google search, my friend.

    Quoted from erak:

Stern as a company has always made me feel distain. Since bringing in 3 models of pins. Building cheaper made games. And cost-cutting every new game but charging more with every new pin. ReIeasing unfinished games. Lipservice about code. Batman 66 was my tipping point. IMHO the greatest theme, but the shittiest playing game. And the highest price. I can't

see myself ever buying a new Stern again.
I hope spooky makes a game that blows any Stern out of the water in gameplay and pricing.
Throw it right back at them.

    Thats how i feel, thanks.

    Quoted from guymontag451:

The tallest trees capture the most sun, but also catch the most wind. It's the double edge of being the big dog. You get to swing your market share around, but you will be hated for it. This bothers me very little, as it is common in business of any industry.
I also, like you, think that competition and having multiple pinball manufacturers in the game is good for the industry as well as us, the consumers. However, I think that in the long run this setback is good for Spooky. It will steel their reserve and push them to shed any lingering naivety they may have had, and instead focus themselves to start actually putting out great games. I like TNA, and have hopes that Alice Cooper will be great. However, they still haven't released anything great yet. No instant classic, undeniable pin. I hope this drives them. I want to see it. I know that we all do. It was nice being the cute little underdog that everyone rooted for, and appreciated just for showing up. Now it's time to see the little dog's teeth.

First off, Thank you for posting something smart and with a little thought behind it. I think i might be able to live with stern stealing TOHO, but what i can't live with is how they did it. They could have just sent an email the next day, but no, they sent someone down in person to walk in on a meeting?!! just walked in with no respect for TOHO or Spooky or to pinball for that matter. Thats what hurts,Its super insulating on few levels. when you take a dig at someone who is putting his heart and soul into our hobby, actually TRYING to make this community better, it cuts me deep. Pinball hasn't been this good in a real long time, and after this, i don't feel like stern thinks thats a good thing.

I thought Alice Cooper was their dream theme?

Alice is a dream "music" Theme. Godzilla is tops

Long enough to have learned your rep big fella.

What I'm trying to say is, dude, there's lots of opinions on here and you can only speak for yourself.

and what i ment by "Us" was that i'm not the only person who has heard that stern may or *may-not suck to work for. i'm not trying to speak for anyone. and i honestly would like to hear what everyone has to think, hence the me starting this.

Stern evil? Hmmm....naw they're a business and they are just as shady as anyone else. Now, you wanna talk aboot why shit is so crazy in price that's JJP right there...they boned all of us great games or not. Assholes with their "dream themes," jesus grow up.
Now if you'll excuse me I gotta grab another Captain(T) & Coke.
    Or Pepsi whatever.

yea, dammit all of us guys who spend thousands on "games" really need to "grow up" ....... if that means giving up dreaming....... well sign me out.

Might have been a decent topic if worded a bit different.
Instead it’s another agenda ridden Stern bash thread.

naw, he's one of the good guys.

Whoa Whoa tight-tits simmer down. There's a diff'rence betwixt "dreaming" and "jerking off all over a dream theme." Dream themes are dumb...themes don't make games great as a player, gameplay does.

well i have been working out, thanks for noticing i also think dream themes and spank bank should be kept apart.... i really hate how a theme can turn people off from a pin. I think the iron madden pin may be the G.O.A.T. but i don't feel the same for the band. doesn't change how great it feels to play that pin.

If it wasnt for stern, spooky wouldn't exist as pinball would never of survived.
They carried it through the dark days.

Thats very true. I feel that way too. But that dosnt give them the right to bush league the bush league lol

    Quoted from DBLM:

Why don't people say what they really mean to say and stop pussyfooting around? There are some Spooky fanboys here that think the team in WI can do no wrong (just like some Stern fanboys). They want to pump them up no matter what type of product comes out, and have taken it as their mission that if you don't like Spooky or agree with everything that they do, you don't like pinball. I have played most Spooky titles out so far (have not played ACNC) and simply put, I am not a fan of their games. I am a fan of them as a company, and see great improvement in their efforts and wish them continued success.
But back to the fanboys, all the wishing and bitching and moaning about the Godzilla license will amount to jack. You don't know if Stern is going to make a Godzilla pin to coincide with the movie coming out and even if they did get the license to sit on it, that is business. It happens every day, and unless you work for Spooky or Stern in a higher capacity, this does not materially impact anybody commenting on this thread. Also, none of these scenarios makes Stern "bad" and Spooky "good". It is in the end, just business.

personally I view pinball as more of a hobby then a business. The number of people in the hobby is much greater then the number of people in the business. don't belive me, just try and find an empty seat at the next "how to cope w/ your failed pinball venture" meeting. lol that's just me

    #166 5 years ago

i had a lot of time to think about what i've done in my time out. i just want to say sorry for acting a little "stern" lol (had to get that bad joke out of the way). but for real, i'm sorry too those that i may have offended with my passion and my broad statements but mostly my stupidity . i did not mean to attack a whole group based on a few actions of a few people. thats not fair and i'm sorry that it came out that way. I really do love stern deep down, and that with my love for spooky/any smart start up, left me feeling confused and hurt. kinda like when mom and dad fight, no one likes that..... what i guess i hoped to get out of this thread was someone to talk me off the edge of jumping off stern(and some great memes)... not to bash, or get bashed. also just want to say thanks to everyone who helped me pop my noob cheery, i learned alot today.

    Quoted from jar155:

Stern isn't evil. They aren't trying to be evil, but they house some huge egos in that company. They can be mean, petty, vindictive, and ruthless, but it's all just sprouting from bloated egos, not a desire to just outright do harm. And it's not all of them, not even most of them, but a few of them with influence that really make some calls that can make dealing with them awful. Here are a few things they do that can piss people off and get threads like this going. None of this is rumor, it's all substantiated, so before blindly defending any of it, know that it's all real.
They aggressively buy up licenses purely to deny others the chance to use them. Call it good business or whatever, but it's obviously going to rub some people the wrong way, but it's fully in their rights to do it. Most companies that could afford to hold a license portfolio would probably do the same.
They fine distributors and partners for being critical of Stern. If a distributor is upset by anything, and they say, "man, working with Stern can be hard sometimes" online, they can draw a fine for that, especially if Gary is aware of it.
They threaten people. This is probably the closest thing they do to what someone can call evil, I guess. But they'll reach out and make direct threats to you or to those connected to you. It's some serious poor man's mafia garbage, but they do it. Make some comments they don't like, and it won't be too long before Jared is sent to reach out to you to let you know you're in danger of being blacklisted by the company. They'll say that they want to review your content before publishing, just to make sure it's cool with them. They might even call an employer and ask that you be fired. Oh wait, they did do that. Not sure if they still do, but they have.
They strong arm part suppliers to pressure them not to do business with other pinball companies. They'll threaten to pull orders if the supplier is caught dealing with another company. Again, this is within their rights. Lots of companies ask for or demand exclusivity, especially in manufacturing. Like chasing licenses, it's going to irritate other industry members, but that's not really of any concern of the common pinball player.
On the other hand, they're getting better. Putting Zach Sharpe over marketing and pushing Jody off stream has helped their image. Zach is cool, has a good sense of humor, and doesn't fly off the handle and start making threats on live streams to fight people. That's been a great move towards being a more thoughtful company in many ways.
While Stern continually pushes the envelope on cost cutting in materials and QC, they do try hard to make things right when stuff goes wrong. When they need to help a customer who has a warranty claim, they do genuinely worry about making them happy.
Stern has also increased their support of events, charities, and the pinball community as a whole. Just look at prizes over the past couple of years from major events and it's common to see that Stern supported the event. Their partnering with Marco and other large distributors to get A TON of games to shows has been a real help to event attendees who don't want to wait 45 minutes to play the latest release.
You can weigh out the pros and cons of Stern being the top dog in the pinball world. But however you weigh it out, calling them evil is definitely way too far. Jokes aside, Stern is getting better in some ways, but there are always going to be rough edges when the egos come into play.

Wow, you win. best post. just what i needed.
