I have lived in the Midwest (Illinois and Ohio) and South (Florida). Now live in Los Angeles.
As others stated- it is a big state. If you want to move here you need a job out here salary wise that allows you to cover expenses relative to the area. Yes, compared to the rest of the nation things are higher. When you factor in salaries though even moving out of state you need to weigh in salary versus what local expenses are.
Minuses are: Traffic, fires, quakes, crowding. Cost of living is high.
Pluses are: Mostly great weather and all four seasons in driving distance. Ocean is close by, casinos in Nevada are close by, card clubs for gambling are close by. Pinball machines and coin op machines all over the place in collectors homes and barcades. Neighbors are actually neighborly. Lots of great places to eat and food to buy.
These questions come and go as do the cycles of people migrating in and out of the state
