You sound like Donald Trump with your repetitive, broad-stroke, one-word hot take on a very diverse thing. You should try & Be Best. Life is too short.

As a child I was mesmerized by California..wooow the Golden State if only my parents can move there please please please... 40 years later how the narrative has changed ... Not even as a layover or connecting flight would I set foot in that pathetic State !

I wish more people had the same opinion you do. That way those of us who live could enjoy it.

Its all good in my eyes...what your exposing is how naive you are...California is a massive state, and is very different north to south or east to west. The advantage is the state offers just about any environment one would want...jobs, no jobs, traffic, no traffic, beaches, mountains, lakes, desert, hot, cold, dry, wet, etc...its all over the map. Each individual can pick and choose whats important in their livelihood.

I think California is a great state, with so much natural beauty.I think the problem is some of the political viewpoints that come from the politicians. It’s called the left coast for more then its orientation.Oregon has a lot of the same left views and look at it now.

The left coast comment is very true. Especially if your referring to Northern California....SoCal is far more conservative that NorCal

Says the guy who lives in a province that receives 57% of all provincial/territorial equalization payments for the entirety of Canada. And has a provincial debt of $270 billion.

Good shit! Since he seems big on data and citations, his second home, Florida, also happens to be a "taker" state (to the tune of $1.12 drawn from the federal pot for every $1 contributed).

I always hear about this mass exodus from California (strange to hear since the population keeps going up). You can't get a 1000 sq. foot ranch in the San Fernando valley near the 101 for under 800K. Must be desirable to a whole lot of people despite all of the Texas hype.

California is paradise. That's why so many people flock to it and why it is so expensive. The midwest is flyover country for a reason. I know. I live there.

    #417 3 years ago
    Quoted from avspin:

I lived in Northridge at the time. Lost my home and most of what was in it. I was most upset when I found out it was not on the San Andreas.
But that is not why I left.
I left 20 years ago (wish I did it 20 years sooner) and never looked back. First to raise a family in a safe place. Second money, no state income tax in Nevada, better business environment as a business owner and a whole lot less taxes. Third, politics.
There are a bunch more but this is not the forum.

Have you ever come into contact with Lt. Dangle?

Ive lived in a few states in some pretty desirable areas...

Outside of Hawaii (where I have never lived but went to every year when i was in Cali) I always say California was my favorite place... and I have been all over it so I know the state pretty well.

I spent one year walkable to the beach in Manhattan beach and every day after work would go have some dinner and a few beers and go in the water...

I miss that kind of stuff. But like I said earlier living on a fault line thats way overdue? no thanks.

To each their own right....I've been all over the world, and found out pretty quickly that every place has its pros and cons. Whether your on the west coast, midwest, or east coast. They all have their pros and cons....no place is better than another....its a personal choice

Flyover? You sound like my east coast wife. She thought Michigan (most beautiful "midwest" state) and Kansas were near each other. I grew up right across the street from Canton, MI near I-275 and Cherry Hill Rd. I hear it's getting worse in terms of schools and crime.

I would move to the West Coast in a heartbeat. I need milder summers...too damn hot in North Carolina! Winters are pleasant based on comparison to Michigan. Northern California through Washington state sounds nice for weather.

Funny....I was Alaska a few years a go fly fishing in the middle of no where. I cut my palm really bad and had to super glue it back together....it stung like a bitch, but it worked .... went to the doctor when I got home, and he said it was healing fine and that stitches weren't required.

I’ve patched up a broken toe with plaster of Paris, , broken rib with tightly wound bandages, glued my forehead back together at work. New Hampshire healthcare at its finest.

Sorry about the fires over there. That’s scary shit.

Absolutely true. CA is paradise and the jobs are substantially better. The housing is the real bummer though. Pay 10x what it’s worth everywhere else.

    I left a 2004 1940sq ft house that I bought new for 155k.
I rented a 1958 1722sq ft house until the owner decided to sell and offered it to me for 1.5M. I declined.

So for me it was around 10x more for a smaller and much less nice house.

When you start looking at 1.5M homes in Texas, the numbers change and you're probably looking at 4x for a comparable CA home.

    #436 3 years ago

Put another way, look at those homes you referenced for 1.5M - mansions, with pools and lots of land, etc.

1.5M in Silicon Valley is a barely passable house. Definitely nothing fancy.

Not even close. Certain parts of the Bay Area and so cal yes...but for the rest of the state, those 2 homes would be worth the same here or less

Fair enough. The Bay Area is my CA frame of reference which is for sure batshit crazy.
I wish it wasn't so, I loved living there despite the lower standard of (house) living.

    Quoted from Blitzburgh99:

Shouldn’t the California folks be powered down to conserve energy per the governor? How are all you guys/gals on pinside right now?

The whole topic of the power situation in CA could be a big thread of its own with plenty of arguments. But basically these days when it gets super hot, in Socal the power company requests everyone to dial it down, especially between 3 and 7. Amazingly, everyone did pretty well on this and blackouts were minimal when we had that bad heat streak a few days ago. The central valley and NorCal are different, they have PG&E and because of the giant mess of the Camp fire they perform mandatory shutdowns in high risk areas with the goal of not starting more fires. So large swaths will just go without power, sometimes for extended periods.

All that said, as of right now in Socal things are pretty good, temps are way down. It’s around 72 or so.

Basically, it’s around 70-75 here about 340 days a year. It’s around 100 or so maybe 15 days. On the other 10 days it rains.

Your not wrong....in the Bay Area land is whats really expensive...empty .25+ acre lots (which is a big lot for a new home) sell for over $1M in my area...and then if u want to build a custom home your talking $300-$400 a square foot....it adds up pretty quick....areas that are close to job centers, and have good schools are pricey. That being said there are many parts of California that are far less expensive. My buddy in Utah has a nice home thats 4K square feet and he paid $400K....he laughs at our home pricing.
