    I've got a board with a suspect EF6809EP. I've got some M6809EP's on hand. Compatible replacement?

    I would vote yes. Just different brand. E according to article above is external clock input.

    Yes they are the same. Like mentioned, the letter E is important when replacing a 6809. There are also different speeds. 6809, 68A09 and 68B09. 68B09 is the fastest. You can use faster but cant go down in speed. If in doubt check the schematics and see what is supposed to be in there.
    The prefix is the mfg. EF is usually ST and MC is usually Motorola but can sometimes be National.
