I don't think my current project machine will be far enough along for any beta testing, but I'd be interested once these go into production.

Very cool!

I wasn't in on the beta testing, but if more become available, I would probably pick up enough for two games - one six digit set for Lost world, and I think I would go with a seven digit to convert my Embryon over. (I so of have to get some seven digit boards for that though.)

I know I hit "SUBMIT", but I don't recall if there was a confirmation or not... I need to learn to pay attention a bit better!

I really like that SBM!
I started on my first display, and it's going pretty well so far. It'll probably be a couple of days before I finish this first one, as I've been pretty busy at work. I'll leave some better feedback once I've finished this one and gotten started on the rest of them. I'm really looking forward to having made some working displays out of my pile of old parts!

-Brian, wishing there were more hours in the day.

Well, it took a lot longer than I wanted to get the first one done, but it was because of non-pin-related stuff. Overall, I think it took me about two hours to do this first display. I was working very slowly and methodically, and it was broken up into three or four different sessions. And I took lots of pictures too! I imagine the next ones will go significantly quicker. I started with a Bally -21 that was definitely past it's "use-by date".Original display with obvious burnOriginal display with obvious burnIMG_2258 (resized).JPGIMG_2258 (resized).JPG
Here's the retrofit kit components:IMG_2259 (resized).JPGIMG_2259 (resized).JPG
I set up my tablet on the bench with the .pdf instructions.IMG_2261 (resized).JPGIMG_2261 (resized).JPGIMG_2260 (resized).JPGIMG_2260 (resized).JPG
I started by pulling the header and old plasma and depopulated and cleaned the board.IMG_2264 (resized).JPGIMG_2264 (resized).JPGIMG_2263 (resized).JPGIMG_2263 (resized).JPGIMG_2262 (resized).JPGIMG_2262 (resized).JPG
Next I installed the new board components.IMG_2275 (resized).JPGIMG_2275 (resized).JPG
I soldered in a new header, then set my hobby vise up to hold the new display panel up horizontally and dropped in the right-angle pins.Notice I forgot the pin for D6...Notice I forgot the pin for D6...
Then I aligned the donor board (with the brackets mounted to it) with the pins and started the screws. This worked pretty well.IMG_2281 (resized).JPGIMG_2281 (resized).JPGIMG_2282 (resized).JPGIMG_2282 (resized).JPG
At this point I clamped the assembly in my vise by the original donor board and soldered the pins in place. IMG_2283 (resized).JPGIMG_2283 (resized).JPGIMG_2285 (resized).JPGIMG_2285 (resized).JPGIMG_2288 (resized).JPGIMG_2288 (resized).JPGIMG_2286 (resized).JPGIMG_2286 (resized).JPGIMG_2284 (resized).JPGIMG_2284 (resized).JPG

Next up was to add the jumper. This was pretty straight-forward. IMG_2291 (resized).JPGIMG_2291 (resized).JPGIMG_2292 (resized).JPGIMG_2292 (resized).JPG
And finally I soldered the LEDs in place on the new display board. IMG_2299 (resized).JPGIMG_2299 (resized).JPGIMG_2298 (resized).JPGIMG_2298 (resized).JPG

I made up a test plug: IMG_2300 (resized).JPGIMG_2300 (resized).JPG

And then I tested. I found that D6 didn't work at all - notice that I had forgot to put in the right angle pin in the picture up there... And on D1, b and c segments were out. I found a solder splash in one of the traces and fixed that. They all work! IMG_2301 (resized).JPGIMG_2301 (resized).JPGIMG_2302 (resized).JPGIMG_2302 (resized).JPGIMG_2303 (resized).JPGIMG_2303 (resized).JPG IMG_2304 (resized).JPGIMG_2304 (resized).JPGIMG_2305 (resized).JPGIMG_2305 (resized).JPG IMG_2306 (resized).JPGIMG_2306 (resized).JPG IMG_2307 (resized).JPGIMG_2307 (resized).JPG

Overall, I'm very happy with how this turned out, and am looking forward to getting the rest of this set done.

Thanks!!

Quoted from too-many-pins:

Unless I am missing something it doesn't look like "pinsound" works for these earlier machines. Regardless it is hard to consider spending over $300 to improve sound on a $600 pinball machine. That is the nice thing about these display kits - for about $100 & a little time you can accomplish something that would otherwise cost you almost 3 times as much.
Anyway - maybe sometime down the road someone will come up with a cheaper sound board for these machines - until then I'll just keep loving the art and enjoying the pure & simple game play of these early Bally machines. But Nugent without music is one I will never own again! Love the backglass art but a music theme pin without music just doesn't cut it!

Well, as far as the sound goes, someone appears to be working in it: https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/mypinballs-sounds-plus-sound-board-in-development

And to keep this on topic, I spent a little more time working on my displays this weekend, and got another done. Still took longer than I hoped, but I started on the next one today and it's going a lot quicker.

I should be able to get some pictures of my Lost World up late this week.

Okay, I've attached images of my Lost World with white LED conversion with amber filters. I didn't have the foam placed properly on a couple, and there is some bleeding through of other lights, but hey...
Another thing I meant to post earlier is a little short-cut I found while assembling - use the old displays as a form for bending the resistors - it works pretty well.
And I do hope you keep offering these. I know I have at least one machine currently that I will be ordering a kit for, I just have to decide if I want convert to 7 digit or stay with 6 digit (Embryon).
Anyway, thanks again for offering these! I really enjoy them.

Very cool. Thanks again for making these available! I imagine I'll be ordering a set later this year. (If all goes according to schedule, which occasionally does happen...)
