Hello Pinside,
This is my first guide here so please be gentle!

I've been wanting to put upgraded speakers and Speak Light Kit on my #star_trek_le for some time now and I finally pulled the trigger.
I ran into some gotcha's along the way and have some tips to share for those that want to take this same journey. Hopefully learning lessons from this install will eliminate same frustration I had for others.
*edit - The frustration was entirely my fault as I misplaced a bag of 5/8 female/female standoffs.

First, inspiration came from the LOTR post
https://pinside.com/pinball/forum/topic/installation-of-color-dmd-lighted-speaker-kit-and-fidelity-flipper-s

It was pretty clear the placement of the speaker grill make a huge difference in the quality of the acrylic insert so this was the plan from the start.

Speaker Panel -> acrylic insert -> Light Frame -> grill -> Speaker -> factory nut
The right speaker gets the ground cable between Speaker and factory nut.

The speaker kit came with 8 6-32 5/8" aluminum standoff screws which is great if you aren't going to use a Speaker Light Kit however not so great if you want to have the grill in the back.

The Speaker Panel has 4 6-32 rough thread studs per speaker. This means the supplies provided was insufficient to create this desired layering. I sent an update to Flipper Fidelity seeking input to get more of these 6-32 5/8" standoffs but didn't hear back nor are they for on their website so it was off to find these things in the wild.

Now for the frustrating part. It was quite difficult to find these standoff's but eventually found them on Amazon. Apparently they are out at the moment.

I would *gladly* pay the few extra bucks it would take to toss in 8 more of these standoffs to avoid scraping Amazon for parts that doesn't take 1-2 months to ship! Perhaps Flipper Fidelity and Speaker Light Kits can get in sync and document this "grill in the back" setup and offer these standoffs for sale
*edit - this install is possible without further purchases if you use the supplied female/female standoff. These were lost at the time of install.

If you wanted to go the way indicated in Speaker Light Kit instructions:
Speaker Panel -> acrylic insert -> grill -> Light Frame -> Speaker -> (alternately) factory nut
You can accomplish this same thing using 1-1/4" standoff for a clean install. It doesn't look as good externally, but I have posted it here in case anyone is curious.

Ok, now pictures of the right side, with stacked 5/8" standoffs. These are pretty self explanatory.
Here's the right Speaker with the Acrylic insert, Light Ring then the first 5/8" standoff
R1 (resized).jpegR1 (resized).jpeg

Next comes the grill, the next 5/8" standoff, then the speaker, ground cable and stock nut.
R2 (resized).jpegR2 (resized).jpeg

For the sake of documentation and comparison, here's the left speaker in the order of
Acrylic, grill, light frame, 1-1/4" standoff.
L1 (resized).jpegL1 (resized).jpeg

Finally the Speaker and the stock nuts.
L2 (resized).jpegL2 (resized).jpeg

Fire it up and you can clearly see the difference between the left and right speaker!
LBRG (resized).jpegLBRG (resized).jpeg

After fixing the left speaker to use the double 5/8" standoff and things look much better.

In case you wanted a closeup of the standoffs, here they are. Two 5/8" are stacked to show the same length as the 1-1/4"

I hope this helps anyone in the future wanting to install the combination of Speaker Light Kit + Acrylic insert + Flipper Fidelity on a late model Stern SAM machine. Save yourself some headache and shoot for 16 total 6-32 5/8" aluminum standoffs. It will look much better and it allows you to use the stock nuts for a nice clean install.
*edit- again, headache is self caused by losing the supplied female/female standoffs.

If you don't lose the parts like I did then you don't have to fuss with this alternate method

Cheers
Dan

Hey Dan,

All the hardware needed for this install method was included with your Speaker Light Kit. There was no need for more time or money spent on Amazon...or even the need for the hardware Flipper Fidelity included with their speakers.

AS PICTURED BELOW: Put down acrylic design, put on hex standoffs (included), put down the light frame, put on the grill, put on the speaker, attach with the included extended screws...and done.

I know the install instructions on my site are outdated, they were made before I even offered the light frames with the round holes, but they do mention the different install methods for the acrylic designs (acrylics in front of grills, acrylics behind grills or acrylics in the front and the grills behind the light frames). It also explains the extended hardware (which used to be sold separately, but is now included) is used for after market speakers that have the spacer rings attached to the front of them.

Sorry for any confusion, but your frustration was all for nothing as everything that was needed was included with your Speaker Light Kit.

PS: I include the female / female hex standoffs instead of female / male so you can even mount the light kits with acrylic design, light frame, different acrylic design, speaker grill and then speaker. This double acrylic stacking method looks really good with certain designs (EX: AC/DC figures in the front with lightning bolts in the back, Iron Man figure in the front and Arc Reactor in the back, KISS logos in the front and the KISS icons in the back...) and can't be done if a female / male hex standoff were included as the little thread that come off the male end of them isn't big enough to accommodate the light frame, back acrylic design, speaker grill and speaker. An example of the acrylic double stack can be seen here:

https://1drv.ms/v/s!ApLozahRRppJgT5QFVae6OYdpsSd

The mounting order of things do change the look quite a bit...for different reasons. In the case of Star Trek, I think having the grill behind the light frame helps because it is brighter, since the grill is not blocking any light, plus if you look back in the design area you won't see the speaker lit in the back....you will see the grill lit up back there instead. That gives it a more uniform and less cluttered look.

On other acrylic designs it is even more important to mount the grills behind the light frames. Specifically the mirrored designs that have etched details in them. The bigger the etched area on these acrylic designs...the more important it is to mount the acrylics in the front and the grills behind the light frames (so they are not directly behind the designs and not between the design and the light source). A Ghostbusters, Family Guy or South Park design with the grill mounted directly behind them looks pretty bad compared to one mounted with the grill back behind the light frame. As I mentioned, the different mounting methods are mentioned in my install instructions. I also say each design is different and some may look better mounted one way while others look nice another way. I like many of the bolder, black acrylic designs (ex: Shrek) mounted behind the grills so they can't even be seen until the game and light kit is turned on. So it's largely a judgment call and up to preference.

I hope you enjoy the light kit and sorry for any confusion.

Just another thought...you could have put down the acrylic design, Flipper Fidelity's 5/8" female / male hex standoffs, the light frame, the grill, then my 5/8" female / female hex standoff, the speaker and then attach with my 3/8" screws.

Thank you for posting this! I triple checked the several bags of supplies while installing and never found the 5/8 female/female standoffs which is what prompted the whole alternate setup.

I re-scanned the area just now and guess what I found on the floor hiding under a table? Yep, the bag of standoffs got kicked under the table. How embarrassing! If I had seen these right away, then certainly all this alternative work would have been prevented. All the parts are there to install out of the box (if you don't lose them)
In the end, I'm very happy with the clean install.

The light kit is beautiful, so glad to have this installed as it really dresses up the machine wonderfully.

Just reinstalled with the female/female standoffs as you described
- acrylic > standoff > light frame, circle outward > grill > speaker > screw

Perfect fit and looks great. It looks with the light frame flipped, the light is just a tad brighter.

Thanks for setting me on the right path, Doug!

As you know from installing them both ways, the light frames can be flipped either direction when mounting them (with the mounting holes against the speaker panel, as the install manual describes or with them toward the speaker).

In either case, they work fine and it is usually just the visual difference of how much of the light plate you can see in the back part of the lit area. How much of the light frame you can even see back there varies a great deal, depending on what acrylic design you are using. I usually chose to mount the light frames with the round hole with the round hole toward the back (against the speaker). The round hole in the plate matches the round hole in the speaker panel if you can see it back there behind the design. Others like to keep the round hole toward the speaker panel so they see less of the light frame in the lit area. As I said...that works fine also. It just makes a small difference visually and is up to a persons personal preference.

I had never thought of having the round part of the plate toward the back making them brighter, but that does make sense and I can understand that it might have that effect.

Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you are happy with the Speaker Light Kit.
