Well this is my first post, mainly at the request of a super Pinhead and good friend of mine - Eric, I was convinced to post this Tron mod project along with pics, see that now that I'm pretty much - at least I hope so - finished with this pin. As several of you know I own Arcade Odyssey in Miami, FL and I love to trick out almost everything, from the games in the Arcade to the very walls and ceilings themselves, However sometimes I really get an idea stuck in my head and take a particular project way too far, this particular Tron Pro being one of them, it all started when I won this pin in a raffle at the A.P.E Show in Florida which is run by a very good friend of mine with a particular Arcade Star Rider fetish - Marcel Gonzalez, and it was already pretty tricked out when I got it, having been powder coated, having the ramp and mirror mods as well as several others already installed, now I could have left this pin well enough alone, since it was already very nice to begin with, but I loved the Original Tron film, the 2nd one was pretty good, but im an old schooler and liked the original one way more, I also have both of the Arcade Games, which are among my top 10 favs, Tron and a Tron EDOT, so now that I had this Tron pin I just had to see what else can be done with this, So hence begun a project that has lasted over a year, here is a list of what has been done to this pin so far,

I tried to be as exact as possible, I checked the mods against a couple of other tron pro's and listed the differences as best I could. I might have a different manufacturer listed or be a model # off, since several of these mods were put on prior to me getting the game, so I apologize in advance for any lack of perfection in tracking everything precisely down, but will correct any discrepancies as I find them.

Getting the Mantis and Cliffy ramp protector to work together was a bit of a pain, but speaking with Cliff Rinear - he gave me some ideas to check out, I managed to get them to work together and sent the info to Cliff in case anyone else ever wanted to install them both.

Several of the Mods I had to build myself such as the blinking Flynn, Quora and Rinzler Characters, they are attached to 2 circuits, 1 that regulates the voltage down to 4.3vdc and the other one which acts as a flip flop circuit, blinking the first set of characters on for 5 secs, then off for 30 secs, then the next character turns on for 5 sec, and the whole sequence restarts again.

A few of the ships as well as flynns cycle I had to cut open and install leds in them, I tried to be as meticulous as I could with the wiring and make the leds look like they belong.

Heck I built and installed so many mods that I might still be missing some in the descriptions above. I have put as many pics as I could trying to show as many of the mods as possible including the mantis and cliff setup. In case I missed any or anyone wants to see a particular one that I may have missed a pic for, please just let me know.

Special thanks to Frank - Flecom - for the undercab and rear cab light up kit, and for his OCD acting up and noticing that i had a couple of the led mods connected improperly on the diodes, thus causing the blinking to not be as it should, It is corrected now, thanks to him.

Many Thanks and I hope you all enjoy
Rick

Tron looks great, nice job!.......and by the way, I love Arcade Odessey!!! I was down in Miami for business and was there almost every night. Your collection of vids and pinball at Odessey is awesome! It brought me back 25 years to the glorious arcade years! Thank you sir for starting and maintaining that business.

Nice! Is this at Arcade Odyssey or your personal collection? I'm up in Boca. I'll have to swing down and check it all out.

I prefer the 2 females, not too big a fan of the 3d one. Even considered the NSF one, liked that one even more.

Personal collection, way too many items to maintain in a running arcade.

Sorry Spidey, but i'm not exactly sure on what you mean by double scoring lights, I do have led flasher lights in the apron - crap i forgot to put those in the items descriptions above, they are attached to Jumper J7, pins 6 & 7 on the I/O Board, if that is what your referring to then the answer is yes, if not, can you please describe what they are.

Thank you for the Kind words, we try very hard to keep the original arcade look and feel from the 80's and 90's going, though it is not always very easy to do, but we love what we have built and hope to expand it someday soon.

Many Thanks

This was my TRON many, many, many moons ago. This was the first and really the only pin that I sold years ago that I missed. I actually threw some serious money in the raffle to try to get her back. I'm happy to see that it went to a great home!

The game looks decked out and great.....but...here's a tip on those speaker lights:

Certain acrylic designs, especially ones with a lot of etched area, look MUCH better if the original speaker grill is NOT mounted directly behind the designs. Getting the grill from being between the light source and the designs makes it so the grill holes don't show in the designs. It also makes it so the grill is lit in the back area and not the speaker. This gives it a cleaner look in the lighted area. Different mounting methods are mentioned in my install instructions, but it seems they go largely overlooked as I see a lot of Speaker Light Kits not looking as good as they could because of the order things are mounted.

If a person doesn't like the area around the design being open...it even helps things a bit by adding a couple of washers (as spacers) all the way around to get the back of the design away from the grills a bit.

Pictured is the same design, same light kit frame and same light kit setting. I just took these pictures when I saw your thread.

Enjoy the game. It looks great.

I now own a crazy modded Tron as well. Mine just is just short of a few items you have which I would like to get. Love the Recognizer lit bank mod. Might have to do that one. Great job on your beautiful pin.

One thing I noticed is that your CLU Command Ship (Front left side) is facing the wrong way like it is flying away from you. I have that toy/mod and did you know the front and sides are with tinted red plastic? You can open it up and insert led inside the nose and body and it will all light up.

Is your Encom logo made from metal or is it just a sticker?

Yes, that sounds correct. The flashers that go off during Double Scoring, so it behaves the same as the LE.

I'm Sorry to disagree with you on this one Mok, but I am pretty sure that the clu ship is facing the correct way, flying towards the player - as you see on all these links below, you will see that the larger split portion is the front of the ship.

I was looking at the chrome leg bolts but I could not tell the difference by looking at them on the websites, at least not noticeably, if they are significantly shinier - for example, you can tell immediately between the chrome and the standard ones from 6 ft away let me know and I will add them.

Doug (SpeakerLightKits.com)

Doug, first of all thank you so very much for pointing this out, I went ahead and did what you showed and immediately saw a massive improvement, the acrylics almost take on a holographic appearance since they reflect on the speaker grill, It is a much appreciated improvement, but then I noticed the gap which you referred to - which was not too pretty since you could see the screws and the led strip was beginning to lift and you could now notice it immediately. Instead of using washers I went to my local home depot and picked up white 1/2" x 1/2" x .194 nylon spacers, much better now, the tension of the spacers helps push the led strip taught, and covers the screws nicely and since it is white, it reflects the colors of the leds beautifully. I am including pics to show everyone. Thank you so much for this recommendation.

I know I am going to damage my thumbs up/down ration. But maybe, just maybe, throttle back a bit on that many mods and get a another pin

It does look sweet though...

Haha I'm actually surprised the mod removers club members haven't trounced this thread already!

Nope. Haha. Sorry. I'm right. The toy marketing has the angle WRONG. Check this scene out from Tron Legacy on youtube and watch the Command Ship fly at 0:47

I doubt it is flying backwards. Also ClU watches the disk wars battle from the front window.

Quoted from ccatalyst:

I'm Sorry to disagree with you on this one Mok, but I am pretty sure that the clu ship is facing the correct way, flying towards the player - as you see on all these links below, you will see that the larger split portion is the front of the ship.

Well mok, I cannot argue with that, all I can say is that if the toy marketing companies got it wrong and on all these modded pinball machines which I have linked to below, every single one of them has mounted the clu ship in the same way as the marketers showed on their packages, I had no other reference point, I just went with the way everyone else has either seen the toy marketed or installed it on their machines.

Yeah, getting the grills away from the back of those designs helps a lot. My next suggestion would have been to flip the light plate so the corner mounting holes are against the speaker panel and out of sight. Mounted with the mounting holes toward the panel...you can still see the light frame edges, but not the corner mounting area. With the spacers in there...the frame corners aren't as noticeable anyway (as the spacers are on them). It's a very small and subtle different anyway, no matter which direction the light frame is mounted.

After seeing your close up pics...that's a weird configuration. It appears to be my light frames (unless someone else is copying them that I don't know about), but someone has put different light strips in them. Believe me, I know about the copies out there, but I also know the small difference they have that makes it so I can spot them (as far as I know). I don't believe my light kits have had any issues with the light strips peeling away from the frames since I started doing things a bit differently about 3 years ago. On the Speaker Light Kits, I have kept things basically the same for the past (almost) 5 years, but there has been constant involvements with parts, putting them together and the testing processes on them.

Enjoy the game, It looks great!

Me gad man.. i thought I was a fan of Tron. Its one of sterns best machines. Enjoy it and dont ever sell it. You would regrett it first and you would also never get back what you have invested in it. Great job. Looks nice.

I was looking at the chrome leg bolts but I could not tell the difference by looking at them on the websites, at least not noticeably, if they are significantly shinier - for example, you can tell immediately between the chrome and the standard ones from 6 ft away let me know and I will add them.

Haha. Wow! I can't believe how many people did it wrong. Oh well. Keep it that way if you like it. I just saw it and thought something looked off. I love your machine. I want to do some of those mods as well.

Question: What method do you use to hook up a new LEDed toy in the playfield? Do you alligator clip it to GI? What resistor do you use? 150?

Thanks

Nope for the new toys it was not so easy, I used an adjustable voltage regulator to feed them each 4.3vdc, they normally run on 4.5vdc, but I did not notice any difference in brightness at all, and wanted to run them with less voltage since it was going to be constantly working and I wanted them to last . All the new figures require a drain resistor to completely drain the voltage if even .1vdc is going to it , they will not reset and light up again, even then I had to setup a flip flop circuit to keep the figure off for 40 secs , while draining any remaining voltage before it would reset and be able to light again, quora will work after 20 secs, Flynn works at around 25-30 secs and rinzler is the worst at 35-40 sec. Tried 2 rinzlers they both need 35-40 secs to drain and reset.

OK thanks to Mustang Paul for pointing this out to me, but now we have Show Quality chrome leg bolts all around. For those of you who have wondered if they look significantly different than the standard bolts, cause the pics i have seen online don't seem to show much of a difference from the standard bolts, at least i used to say that, but these closeup pics will show the difference it makes.

Thanks for posting. Those Show Quality bolts really are icing on the cake aren't they and notice how the free leg bolt washers that come with my mod light up a bit also. Your game is really over the top.

Yep, thank you for that once again Paul, now we are up to 80 mods so far on this 1 pin.

80..... that's insane. I'm in the process of designing another light up mod that no one has done before. This design shit is hard. and after all the hard work it may not even pan out and if it does no one may even want it. It's a universal mod so it would work on any game same as my Leg Light-Ups.
