The first things I'd check are connectors, make sure they are not one pin off or reversed.
Then look at the board for evidence of alkaline damage/leakage/remediation.
Photos of the board/connectors that are well lit, FOCUSED, and close-up might help others identify an issue.
Factory reset might help if the data in RAM got corrupted but obviously that will be hard to do if you can't read the display.

You might ask for photos of a properly installed ribbon cable in the owner's thread if that would be helpful.
