Quoted from Ricochet:

You know what... it may be that the hole on the protector is a little too big... so it’s sitting down lower on the star post than it should... interfering with the ball

That could be the issue, ill check mine out when i get home and ill try a lexan washer under it and see if i get different results.

It really depends upon what kind of post stud you have too. The more I think of it ... unless the protector has a giant hole... that probably isn’t it

I’ve decided to replace of all the IR tx/rx sets that are on the top of the playfield. A good friend recommended this. It is a good suggestion because I wouldn’t be too crazy about having to pull stuff apart to fix these if they turn out to be faulty after all this cleaning and handling.

They are easy to replace. Just take one wire off at a time, trim, re-tin and solder it to the new module. Add the solder to the solder pad before attaching the wire.

Perfect! You'll sleep better at night because of it What did you say happened to your captive ball wireform? That playfield looks AMAZING!

Glad you thought of it. It’s a pricey operation though. They are making a killing off of those modules!!!

Um yeah I installed the target switch ... removed it to add the wires ... when I re-attached it, the darn bracket just popped off. It must have had a fracture in the weld or something because I didn’t crank on it at all.

#409 4 years ago
Quoted from Ricochet:

Welp... my captive ball wireform failed. I was re-installing the switch and the bracket popped off. I'm now in a holding pattern until I can source one to be plated. For the record I didn't "Hulk" it tight... it must have had a weakness to begin with.
I'm a bit sick to my stomach. This happened on Sunday, thought I found one but it turned out to be an out of stock item.
I'm going to try to find someone to re-weld it... but I'd rather get a replacement and try to fix this later.
C'est la vie

Hey Ricochet
There is a guy on the Aussiearcade Forum that has a captive ball wireform for sale. I'll pm you the details.

You could have kept the old housings but oh well

Yeah I almost did... but the mounting holes were pretty worn due to the fact that the plastic is aged and self tapping screws were used to begin with... and they were yellowed

Put Mylar on the drop target area...

Could not resist putting KornFreak28’s biplane on. Damn!!! Does that fu****g look great on a nice sparklin' clean machine or WHAT?!!!

I didn’t bother securing it... it belongs under the rear nut of the plastic. It was just a photo op

#418 4 years ago

Cleaned and re-switched the rear POA bridge...

This piece is a b1tch to re-surface and get the grain right as it’s full of tabs and has a curve in it.

Just looked back on this thread... I've been at this for 6 months now... unbelievable. Soup to nuts restoration isn't for the faint of heart thats for sure. If you have a bit of OCD like me... it makes it even more difficult because when you want everything to be just so, there is always something to replace/fix/improve/clean.

Of course this isn't full time work but not a day goes by without me touching it or thinking about the next steps. Going to be probably another week or two by the time I get that new captive ball cage turned around.

Once the playfield is complete... I hope to do a video of the installation of the playfield and its first signs of life (hopefully). I still have a color DMD to install... I almost forgot about that.

Made another one of these for a friend. This is the last one of these I will be making. I’ve been fortunate to have some help on getting this done and it wouldn’t be right to be making these... as the work is not all my own. Not to mention ... it’s a ton of work and really really pricey.

One thing I never had restored/cleared was the mini POA playfield. I cleaned it, sanded and sealed the bare wood and waxed it. It really looks fine. However in the interest of the insanity that is this restoration, I got a repro coming from Mirco, we’ll see how it looks.

Here is the original cleaned up. It’s amazing how crudely these were cut. There are burn marks from saw cuts on this thing (on the sides not shown). I sanded as much of it off as I could.

Right ramp rebuild. This had a bit of a quirk. The switch bracket was offset too far away from the slot... so the switch actuator would bind.

A couple of small washers would do the trick but I found a spacer (a part from Cirqus Voltaire) that works perfectly.

seems like most people doing restorations go with the metallic stainless ramp flaps, but I really love the look of the original blue steel

I got this ramp like 9 years ago. I think I got it from Marco.

The switch bracket that is riveted on the ramp is offset a little too far from the slot in the ramp... so the spacer moves the switch body to the right position so the actuator doesn’t rub against the slot in the ramp.

Welp ... the POA playfield replacement is a bust. The version I have is different than what Mirco is making. The mounting holes for the side rails are in completely different locations.

I could drill my own holes here but some of the holes in the repro would not be covered by the rails ... and consequently would show.

So I’m gonna stick with my existing POA playfield.

I will be selling this Mirco repro at a discount. The finish is beautiful, artwork is a little cock-eyed. LMK if your interested.

They do look different but the clear coat is like glass. That may be just the way the insert is made... perhaps the thickness of the plastic is greater preventing you from seeing the gem lines with just the ambient light.

Well at the moment he is using the CAD files from Williams as his reference... and all I know is that my machine is different than what he has used. I have to imagine there are others in this same situation. I can only speculate that due to early prototype versions of IJ vs. production run there may have been a design change at some point and that's what I'm dealing with.

Create a wooden backbox, add lights to inserts, install a $4 clock mechanism in the middle, and you have a unique POA clock!

I have an early sample IJ and the new Mirco playfield. The holes for the POA metal rails line up fine. I wonder if that is only because my rails are flexible to to help contour, vs the red plastic that isnt flexible. So far a lot of the holes line up on the large and small playfield OK, some dimpled holes for screws are off but are easy enough to screw in without predrilling.
