Hey All. Working on a Williams IJ, been struggling with getting it to stay up and running. I know these can be a pain at times, advice is welcome.
Summary:
* Originally running fine, but started blowing F116 randomly. It would play for a bit, or sit in attract (or test) mode, then suddenly F116 would blow and it would go into one of those common cycles, e.g. it would reset and/or shoot balls randomly for no reason, while sitting in attract, etc.
* I noticed two bulging caps on the power driver board, one leaking at the top. Replaced all the large caps, and a few of the bridge rectifiers while I was at it.
* Game booted up and seemed good to go for a bit, then blew F116 a day or so later. Former owner installed the Stern IJ topper on the game, along with a color DMD. I removed the Stern Topper and F116 stopped blowing right away. No more resets or anything either. Game ran great (playing and attract mode) for an entire day. Left it on, played now and then, all good.
* Next day, wouldn't boot. Checked 12V, it's perfect. Checked 5V... gone. No 5V at all. Fuses all pulled and checked fine. Pulled the PDB and replaced the remaining bridge rectifiers, as well as C2, C4, C8, J114... a few other things I believe. Got the 5V up to 1.43V, but still no good obviously.
This board (and game) has been hacked up over time. Some messy soldering, sloppy header installs, etc. That being said, it was still running well until all this started. Trying to figure out the next few things to try. I could just go on ahead and rebuild a bunch of the connectors, replace headers like J101, etc. But I figured I would pop on here first and see if someone had run into this sort of thing, or had some advice.
Thanks!
