How can you tell it's a prototype? Just curious I don't know?

Front of cabinet does not have extra ball buy in, works off gun trigger, the upper left playfield (tilt maze ) is stainless not red plastic, under dmd has lights , lost plastic in back of playfield, inserts have different colors,

The stainless siderails on the mini playfield. Very cool!

Plane decals are different as well

Very cool! Especially the stainless upper playfield! A keeper for sure.

Should have red light boards, X serial number matching board set, potential different marked EPROMS (if not upgraded), wiring differences, and not to forget the DMD panel feature lights for the ark, sankara, and grail (that is what was mentioned, and actually is quite cool in conjunction with software).
Few more other things as well, I am forgetting, not mentioned already.

Nice work Whitey, B/W top ten is nearly complete

I think the prototype playfields say "dad" instead of "dr jones". This one appears to be a sample. I have a sample as well so there are at least 2

The wings appear to be longer on prototypes too.

Good research! So sample games are early production? The only other game in our collection that I think is cool is a Whirlwind, Diamond Plate, translite has Williams sticker over Cubs hat. What's really cool it's the first game my dad bought new in box which at the time the guys at CA Robinson wanted to know our route ! Still have her covered up n pampered like a new born, she's priceless

Yes, sample games are early production, normally used for game "on location" testing. Of course, not all early production are samples. Prototypes are used in the design process, and never leave the factory in many, but not all cases, dependent on the number of changes made to the machine prior to beginning the production run.

I need a AFM, but I know the remake is around the corner so I figure more original games will be available? I have a friend with a gorgeous example but im not paying 12.5K

This is an interesting post, my repair tech was over to my house today and pointed out that he's never seen a metal around the path of adventure like mine. I too must have an early run game. Anyone know how many of these were made? I'd love to hear more information on this if anyone knows anything. Thanks!

I just picked up one as well. Mine came from the service manager for Williams who had it made for himself. Very rare find as it is a HUO and in amazing shape. Curious as to how many were made

Personally I never thought these were all that rare as I think I've seen more of these then I have the production ones. Does anyone know how many were made like this?
