Quoted from Ericpinballfan:

Early Bi-planes had wires also known as tension wires to maintain strength.
By 1928 they moved to metal poles and they became struts.

Tension wires! Awesome!

Love the wires. Looks awesome!

Glad you like it. Adding a few more wires unless you prefer to keep it simple?

Cables, landing gear, reflective decals.... I want it all!

Love watching the progress on this....

#206 5 years ago

FYI to all who have requested a harness...

Please don't worry... I'm a little short on time... I've several made already... BUT... I will not ask for your money until they are all made and shipped to KornFreak28.

I've not forgotten, I'm not ignoring anyone... I simply just don't believe in taking people's money until I am 100% completed.

I will send you all an individual PM when they are done and I will post it in this thread.

Thanks a bunch!
- Jim

Have you tried fitting the biplane with propeller spinning into the actual machine with glass on?

On mine it doesn’t look like there is a whole lot of room but with the angle of the glass it could be an optical illusion as well.

Wasn’t sure if the diameter of spinning prop is bigger than diameter of the original plastic piece.

Wasn’t sure if the diameter of spinning prop is bigger than diameter of the original plastic piece.

This is the reason why I was asking about possibly shortening the height of the mounting bracket. I wanted to know if it could be cut and then soldered, got no replies. My playfield is still on the rotisserie and will not put it back in the cabinet until I fire up the machine and make sure everything is working properly. All I need to do is connect all the connectors, hopefully I can do that this weekend. I got my hands full with work, family, restoration and planes. Once I put the playfield back in the cabinet, I'll be able to asses the situation.

I'm fully aware of the possibility of the prop not fitting or hitting the glass. There is several options if that's the case.

#1 Cut the height of the mounting bracket so the plane sits a bit lower. Can it be soldered? I could try to cut it and then make the loops for the screws but I'm really not sure If I'll be able to do that.
# 2 Install the shorter propeller version I posted the other day
# 3 File down/modify the long propeller to fit the game. I really don't want to go this route as those props are really nice and have most been painted already and I cannot guarantee filing or cutting the prop will produce uniform results. I really really want this prop for the biplane. So this would be an emergency option only.

I prefer shortening the height of the mounting bracket to be honest with you. Any other ideas??

#211 5 years ago

How about cutting the top section (where it's secured to the biplane) and just gluing both mounting legs to the biplane? I really don't see the need for the top section. This way we can shorten the height a bit so the plane and prop can fit properly....Are you guys down to the idea of the biplane sitting a bit lower? This is all speculation of course. The plane could fit without any modifications for all we know.....

#212 5 years ago

If anything , I don't know the size of the propeller, the potential problem may be the propeller hitting the wire form?
Shortening the wire frame may not be the answer.

Just about 2 inches....

Ok guys check it out: This is a comparison between Hawk’s plane and CoPinFan’s. You can see how Hawk’s plane sits centered between the ramps and the prop easily clears both ramps....Now let me post CoPinFan’s....

#218 5 years ago

Compared to Hawk’s plane (original), CoPinFan’s plane (a Marco repro) tilts a bit more to the left. Barely clears the wireform. So clearly the mounting brackets aren’t exactly the same. So I’m guessing some Adjustments will have to be made to the mounting bracket. Maybe bend it some? But, you guys are going to have to install it and play with it. Maybe add a washer or two, maybe twist the bracket some?

In my case, I’m using an airball protector. You may have to add washers to lift the plane just enough to clear the wireform.

Can someone take a photo from the side with the glass installed so we can see how much clearance there is?

I’m not really worried about the wireforms, I’m worried about the prop hitting the glass. The Good thing is that we have options at our disposal. Thanks!

No, and unfortunately I don’t think I have one available. It’s actually a bit less than 3 inches

#221 5 years ago

Ok, So I measured from the bottom of the glass to the center of the prop using a caliper. I got 1.549 inches or 39.36mm. So it looks like it should fit. On mine anyways

Awesome news and great contribution! Can you please take a pic just like that with the glass but from the side? I’m still going to adjust your mounting bracket. I just don’t like how the plane tilts to the left. Looks like this will have to be dealt on a case by case basis...Should fire it up by tomorrow!!!!

I pulled back glass as well! I also get 1 1/2 inches. Good news. This propeller will work. Sorry to bring it up, but I was looking at machine and I had an oh shit moment.

No worries Eric! We are a team! I want this from you guys! I want comments and participation. I’ll test them planes for real hopefully by Sunday

What if you used the smaller prop like the one you use on the fighter plane? Now that I see it on the plane, the 3 inch prop seems a bit big in scale with the plane itself. Just an observation... not wanting to throw cold water on your great work.

2 7/8.. I know horse shows and hand grenades. I love that prop. I think it will work fine.

I don’t think it’s that big in scale to be honest with you. I’m using that particular prop for the biplane. The 3 blade prop comes with each fighter plane. It’s not available for the biplane.

I understand you don’t like the bigger prop. What I can do for you is install this shorter prop in your biplane instead These are the only two options available for the biplane.

I’m happy to go above and beyond for you guys but let’s not get carried away with the requests please. Thanks!

Thanks! That propeller still needs some work. I was just testing the chrome paint on it. So it should look a lot better when I finish it.

Did you pick out a color for the biplane prop already?

I just rechecked my PMs, apparently I said Wood/Chrome, but I also said if it ends up being a lot of work, to just do whatever.

I'd be happy with any combination of Wood, Wood/Chrome, or Chrome; they all look great.

Hey George- Dont get me wrong.. I like the wooden prop with the chrome nose and still would like it on my biplane. I was just making an observation. Don’t change anything!

#237 5 years ago

George, I have one of the first motorized propeller Bi-Planes on my Indiana Jones. When I got the the mod I had to trim the propeller to 2 3/8”overall to fit under the glass. This was a add on mod to my Bi-Plane. This is not the mod that is available today but the first motorized propeller that was available years ago for IJ

#238 5 years ago

Remember you need to measure from corner to corner of the propeller to get the radius for glass clearance

#239 5 years ago
Quoted from Bskinner46:

Thanks for that info Bob! We’ll look into it

#240 5 years ago

Measured the prop once more. It’s just a hair less than 3 inches. If it’s 1.5xx from the center it should fit just fine. If it hits my glass when I test it, I’ll shave them just enough to clear the glass. I honestly think that we are good here

If anybody wants to help out and measure their games please go ahead and do so. Again, this is a team effort!

Does anybody have any helpful tips on inserting the playfield back in the cabinet without scratching the sides? This is really giving me the creeps....Thanks!

I can 3D print a demo propeller (like extended size washer) very quickly and test it if you wish.

Felt material, glue tape on one side. Onto the side of the playfield. Without protection, only a question of time when are you going to damage the sideart ( like I did).

George,
As soon as I get home I will take pictures of Bi-Plane so you can see it. My prop barely misses the play field glass

#246 5 years ago

Installing a playfield is a 2 man job .....its tough not to damage the sides. I removed my boards today and they will be serviced by Ardvark pinball.
What a nightmare of unorganized wiring..

It fits under the glass. However, I think a smaller prop would be better, this looks oversized imho.
