Quoted from EricInAlaska:Thanks, SuperMica. I recall I've seen that video before when I was trying to remove rails from Bobby Orr.
The IJ doesn't have any pins. I think it has one bolt and the rest is just double-sided sticky stuff that holds it on. I'm worried that I'm going to tear the decals apart if I try to pry it off. I wonder if a heat gun would work to soft up the sticky tape.
The decals are too nice to trash, but I really need these rails off so I can put on the power coated ones. I painted the original rails, but it looks like shit. Not sure what I was thinking!
I bought a machine last year that had new decals installed right before I got it. The side rails had some small dents, and the legs didn't look so hot, so I also decided to remove the side rails and replace them with powder-coated pieces. I should have made this more clear to the seller that I was planning on doing this, as I would have asked that they didn't put 3M tape on the side rails.
Get a new, sharp razor blade. Cutting at an upward angle, so the cutting edge of the blade is completely under (above the lower edge) the armor, make a single steady cut through the decals on your machine. Then use a sticker peeler to slide under the foam tape and decals, that will probably come off in one piece with the armor. I tried a heat gun to separate the tape from the decals to no avail. Go slow, but steady. Keep an eye on the decals: if you see it peeling with the metal, you must have not cut through it before.
Here is a link to the peelers. The offset on them will help you to not scratch the cab, like you probably would with the handle of a scraper.
