EDITION

Full gallery available on post #130

Hi everybody,

I will present you a one year project from the beginning.
the project is easy, it's a perfect copy of the famous Disneyland Los Angeles Indiana jones williams edition.

Started about 10 month now, I will post one/two/three time each week project evolution. Actually near from the end you could follow major steps of the conception and making of this amazing project!

Dont forget to add to your favorite

let's go !

I started my project with an Indiana jones that comes out of exploitation. it condition wasn't bad but not good at all!

The first part of my work consisted in drawing up the plans of the cabinet using the original IJ cabinet I have!

here you can see the original IJ machine, and the first part of the basic cabinet plans.

Are you going to match the wear on the playfield with the Disneyland version? I tried playing it not long before they got rid of it and it didn't work, but I looked at it long enough to be surprised by how much wear the playfield had. Maybe that was part of the theming in their mind?

I understand that playfield Wear goes with the vintage look of the pin but this pin is a masterpiece. Playfield has been swapped to a new.

Major work on this project is about cabinet copy, vintage style copy, artwork copy etc...

Inside has been restored to have a perfect game condition without using "gold/polished/mirrored parts that aren't according to the global vintage dirty style.

Keep follow, New update comming!

May reach out to GAP, he probably has some sage advice on this project

I still kick myself for not buying the GAP one, it would have been a bargain at today's prices

sorry but this copy is just NOT good... bad job... really sorry for who did it, but...

-wrong wood used
-wrong colors
-wrong vintage finish
-wrong molding sizes
-wrong snake drawing proportions
-where are the hinge ears ?
-bambou size en finish...
-bad sides rails and locker...

definitively...

It just seems to bo good... repaint over the decal, just horrible...

The first part of this project takes me about 4 month.

here the major steps of the preproduction study

-drawing the basic WPC IJ cabinet
-drawing all the molding and wood parts added on the cabinet
-finding all the needed parts for the cabinet
-finding technical solutions about backbox hinges/ side rails/ lockbar and many more...
-drawing the snake and cabinet graphics
-choosing the right wood for cabinet and molding
-establishment of the complete finishing process for the painting technic/cabinet/legs etc...
-complete checkup of the playfield, playfield parts, toys, electronics etc...

Previously we have seen the cabinet basic drawing.
In order to understand, I'm located in France, I have never seen the pin, so entire project is based on the followed picts

The only modifcation/upgrade I have made about cabinet is about backbox hinges. I have decided to find an other solution than standard backbox hinges to solve this "problem" and find a better solution to my mind.

You can see on the original Disneyland pin that backbox hinges are hidding under feathers ears of the cabinet, you can also see that hinge rotation passed through siderail groove.

what is the problem ?

-firstly, I think that digging the hinges covers is creating some problems
- hard to dig the piece of wood
- hard to fix the dig piece since we havent a lot a wood remaining on the edge
- this piece MUST be demountable to have possibility to remove this hinges if necessary

-secondly, standard position of this hinges don't work with the rotation because we had two layers of wood (one on the side rail, one on the backbox edge)
- it is necessary to correct hinges position (X/Y axes) to have a folding backbox

this is why I choose to change this rotation organ.

after a lot a search about all hinges types possible, the only possibility was to use double axes hinges that will be perfect integrated to the backbox.
finish of these isn't good for me since they are zinc plated (tooooo shinny). this is not a problem I will do something for that !

you can also see a quick front view of the wooden plated siderail with wood plated lockbar connection technical drawing

The hard part of the job was to copy the artwork of this Disneyland pinball.
All the more I havent a front image of the snake artwork...

Redraw of this snake was very difficult because it's necessary to have a well proportionate animal but it need to be a the good size as the orignal.
moreover it needs to the a the good place to have all the graphics/cabinet parts that fall right in front.

all the drawing had been made on a CAD software, all the graphics lines too.

1630231826826 (resized).jpg1630231826826 (resized).jpg

in the same time I scaled all the moldings to have a perfect matching style to the original proportions.

1630231826835 (resized).jpg1630231826835 (resized).jpg

Finally I will reveal the choosen material for the cabinet.

-All the hidden panels will be in Black valchromat (high density MDF tainted in the mass)
this is a very qualitative product very clean, beautiful, heavy and dense.

Capture d’écran 2021-08-30 à 17.44.11 (resized).pngCapture d’écran 2021-08-30 à 17.44.11 (resized).png

-All the "wood" visual panels will be in a panel with a massive OAK veneer (1/40" thick), I don't know the English traduction for this type of panel.
its a very expensive panel but quality is amazing, so its a very good choice to me! Oak is the best wood to stick to the original pin.

-All the molding, wood parts, allllll the added wood parts will be in massive OAK.

-all the template for the cabinet panel/ cabinets parts etc... will be in HPL ( 8mm thick)
all the templates have been made by hand using portable tools, NO CNC

received_225266422418337 (resized).jpegreceived_225266422418337 (resized).jpeg

I have choosen the panel material, its now possible to make panels layout since I have panels dimensions.
here you can see the layout for OAK panel and Black valchromat.

#17 2 years ago

do you want a little more content to eat?

All the oak panels and black valchromat panels have been machined using my HPL template with a router.

Concerning panels assemblies, I did not skip.

the whole pinball is assembled using

-Lamello

-clamp

in this way we obtain a high quality assembly which does not risk moving over time

In the following picts you can see backbox first step assembly.

as you can see, I work in the living room, I have no garage or workshop ... not easy!

Hi !!

new update today!

Now that all the panels have been assembled it's time to put all the massive oak parts / trim /molding!

the section of theses has been found with pictures and using proportionality rules.
thickness is about 1/4" (7mm).

all the back box trim have a quarter round molding as the original and all the trims have been miter cut and glued in place without using screws or nail to have a perfect finish !

here you can see the gluing process and the final result

hi every body !!

after the backbox...

further advancement of the massive oak trims/molding/oak parts onto the cabinet and side rails/lockbar !

custom side rails are based on a classic steel siderail which was dressed with oak, stick on it with clear resin.
Same thing for the lockbar, but this part needed more work to match correctly with side rails and original design!

Massive oak Ears have been routed in a more thick piece of oak to raise with top siderail side and glued in place.

you can see the hole for the feet screw (10mm diameter) to do them I have a made a ash template to guide the helical bit.
(i will search a picture of it, it is interesting).

Some updates for today!

On the following picture you can see the trial of the chosen colors and tint.
The colors have been chosen on the RAL en NCS color chart then made by a specialized wood paint profetionnal.
all the colors have been applied to see if everything goes together and match to the original.

Note that its the base colors, they need to be aged afterwards...

received_507692683709023 (resized).jpegreceived_507692683709023 (resized).jpeg

Next steep was to choose how to make the original drawing!
there are many solutions and many cases depending....

-brush application
-spray gun
-air-brush

I choose to apply by hand with standard brush, the aim was to get a drawing base very clean but not with a perfect wood cover, and patinate all after.

i have decided to make stencils using 2mm acrylic (thickness is not a problem with brush, it will if using spray).

the big advantage of acrylic stencils is that they are easily reusable, cleanable, repositionable and finally have little to turn them to have the same drawing in symmetry. with a single stencil we make both sides of the pin body/ears and blackbox.

stencils are the only thing witch was made using Laser cut CNC using my CAD drawing.

Hi every body, today I will share some playfields part...

Plastic ruins all always cracked or so...
I have a buy a replacement part but quality vs original is just shit, so I have decided to restore original one which was made with a good quality plastic and ship back the ugly reproduction!

First step was to stick plastic card pieces under for the cracks and missing parts.

1631349823065 (resized).jpg1631349823065 (resized).jpg

The German meiserschimdt bf109 and the biplane get some care too
Regarding the BF109 original one is just ugly, nothing to do with... I replace it with a beautiful new bf109, after a little modification its in place !

1631349823052 (resized).jpg1631349823052 (resized).jpg

1631349823042 (resized).jpg1631349823042 (resized).jpg

The biplane have been fully repaint with the good serial number in the movie.
Base color is white, after that a grey added with water and finally a white highlight to get a Non-pure white finish but a little dirty white base. Then painting the red and black parts.

to make the letters, I have print them onto a paper tape, cut it, and then applied onto the plane to make a template.
some touch-up after and a clear varnish, this is the result !

hi every body, here some news about paint job !
this is the second part of the cabinet finish !

===to remember the steps===

-1- wood stain
-2- graphics with base colors
-3- wood stain highlight
-4-clear coat varnish Bi-component polyurethan
-5-patina
-6-patina highlight
-7-final clear coat using an other Bi-component polyurethan

Here is the drawing finished with these basic colors, they are very flashy and shiny for the moment but this is necessary for the rest of the finish.
Look a this beautiful snake

Some teasing about final finish.... the first layer of varnish before patina....

received_509213173516339 (resized).jpegreceived_509213173516339 (resized).jpeg

Today I will show you the vintage rusty look for the Indiana Jones launch ball gun.
I choose to make a rusty gun to according to this vintage pin...
Silver base color is used with a lot of layers of brown/flesh/red/black ink to achieve the final color result.
Here the result with 3 layer of varnish

After that, I have decided to make a custom wood handle using wood plates on each side of the gun.
on the fist pict the proto of these gun plates and finally the final batch, I will choose the best according when the pin will be finish. they will be available on sale soon.
