Really wanted to like LEDs and have bought and tried quite a few in a number
of my pins. Use them more in newer pins but also in pop bumpers of older
pins (including EMs) because 47's and 44's fail fast due to the shock and vibration.
    LEDs look horrible behind BG's.

95% of bulbs in my pjns are incandescents.

Just recovered some 555 lamps from a Banzai Run display board. Profit!

I use 1847 bulbs in high vibration areas. This # is the same as 47 bulbs, but has a heavy duty filament.

That's awesome! I was just wondering if there was a "rough service" equivalent for these lamps. Does/did GE make them or do we need to rely on foreign sources? GEs are much more reliable in general.

Also are the 159s equivalent to this for 555s? I could use those in Sega games. They are brighter and really chew through 555s.

The vintage GE 1847 bulbs are the best if you can find them

Has anyone compared 44s to 47s under inserts? I imagine for the heat savings the brightness isn't far off.

    #408 3 years ago

Well this guy is heavy duty and bright!

At 750w in a single bulb it's incandescent porn!!

Big thanks to RCA1 for the bulbs! Many GE 44s and 47 included as well. This kept me busy for an afternoon. That was just one bag after I sorted two additional ones.

    Attention, Incandescent lovers!

I have a stash of 6v incandescent "grain of rice" aka "grain of wheat" bulbs that aren't doing anyone any good gathering dust.

They are already wired on short leads to connectors, which makes for easier, solderless replacement, with a nice long wire on the mated connectors to reach just about anywhere on the playfield. (These tiny bulbs would be almost as much fun as SMDs to solder!)

    Great for mods!

If you have any interest, let me know and I'll post an ad with pics once I decide on a price (which will be quite reasonable).

Are these the tiny ones like what was used in the Data East Hook and Star Trek rope lights?

Yes. I use the brighter 44s over the slightly cooler 47s in both inserts and GI. Only place I use 47s is behind a backglass.

    I think you mean Stargate?

    Pretty close, I'd say.

Forgot Stargate had them as well. Star Trek has a blue rope light on the ramps.

Like some others on here, I've dabbled in LEDs, mostly under inserts in newer games, but 90% of mine are still incandescent. I use 44s for the brightness - my games are on so little that heat isn't a concern.

The lack of incandescent pics in this thread is a sin!!!

They suck voltage/amps, they burn hot, they cause residual burn marks, they don't last as long as LEDs, and you're pretty much stuck with one color. With all of that stated, I've obviously an LED fan. However, incandescent bulbs still have their place in certain applications (e.g. that Xenon backglass looks fantastic). I can see why many use them in classic pins, but just no place for them in modern titles.

Sadly I had to go with LEDs on that game after the resto because it ended up looking more like a modern game with several lighting mods. I like both types of lights. At first I was all about making everything LED but as time goes on I’m loving the beauty of a strong 44 and an appropriately placed 47.
The best LED colors are just trying as hard as they can to look like an incandescent white. The rest are just clown puke.
I agree they’re not for moderns however Deez had a lord of the rings with full incandescent and it looked sexy as hell!!!
I think some games can pull it off. Like a restored TOM seems appropriate for 44s. Not gonna work for TMNT haha

My Bally Lost World is all incandescent. I think my personal cutoff is: any game <1980 use classic incandescent lamps, >1980 feel free to experiment with LED choices

This is a special case, but still a reason to use incandescent bulbs even in later games.

I’d be curious if it’s done in any other games, but in Robo War, only during the ball waiting in the shooter lane, the software cleverly pulses the bulb to emulate a dimming effect for whatever letter in “ROBOWAR” is lit.

Stick LEDs in the game, and the effect is completely lost.

I did sort of the opposite in my EM Fast Draw, another special case. It uses Gottlieb's rapid fire 'machine gun' type bonus counter. I had all incandescent lamps like I usually do with EMs.
When it counts down from 10K or 15K to 1K (and bonus multiplier not lit), the bonus lamps are lit so briefly that they are very dim even in low room light, a very dull looking effect. Barely enough time for them to light up at all. So I put 2X warm white LEDs in those sockets, then ran the ground connection to their lamp strip thru a resistor to cut the brightness of them down to a normal level (it also eliminates the random ghost flickering of those LEDs during countup/countdown of the bonus unit). With the instant lighting of the LEDs, the bonus countdown effect is very bright and crisp now instead of that old dim blur. The color is a good match, you wouldn't guess they were LEDs.

I agree it looks good in Xenon. That mirror effect reminds me of the chase lights you would see on crane games, carnival rides, theater poster frames, etc. I miss that era of lighting very much. Check this out...

I stuck with 44s on the chaser lights in my Black Hole too. It lights only three lamps at a time as it goes around the backglass but the delay of the filaments and the high speed of the rotation gives the appearance of three 'moving snakes' like on a movie marquee, whereas LEDs would have no visible delay, just three leds going around, not nearly as cool looking.

Ill share a secret Ive done with too many games, sometimes I use both Incandescent and LED in the same game, Many games can have 1-10 different LEDs mixed in a game! Choices! Whatever you like best!

I added LEDs to the inserts on my Party Zone and Maverick but left the GI incandescent. I like how the incandescents look kinda like lanterns on Maverick. The GI does some cool dimming stuff on Party Zone that would be lost with LEDs.
