Which game is better and why? If you could only buy one, which would you choose?
Quoted from pmWolf:Both are fine games.
Tron wins, though.
...and it isn't close.
Can't argue with that...Tron
Bum-bum-bum-bum-buuuum...TROOON!
Both games have similar design/rules theories, but Tron is just more robust, more exciting, never loses its excitement or fun factor (IMO). Also, I prefer Tron's design, as it's a bit more unique w/ the 3rd flipper shots.
They both have Jeff Bridges, though!
I own both (Tron LE) and I would have a tough time choosing between the two. Both games have great sound packages, however, IM has the better callouts - after 3 years with IM I still hear callouts that I have never heard before. IM is a reall ass-kicker - just like BSD it keeps you coming back for just one more game. It is the pin I play the most because of the relatively short ball times. Jericho is a blast to play. My IM has CT LEDS and looks amazing so the lighting is nice, howewver, Tron LE is simply amazing and has a great light show.
Overall gameplay for me would mean Tron is the slight winner but it is IM that keeps me continually pushing the start button.
An external factor for me is the fact that my wife loves IM - her favourite! The only 2 pins she has ever really liked are IM and Tron. IM is a love/hate for most people. I hated IM when it was in a friends collection - so much that I had to own one so I could master it - still trying. I hated BSD my whole life too - because it is one tough pin - I love it!
The slight edge for most people would probably be Tron because it has deeper rules and more to do but for those of you who haven't spent much time on IM please don't short change it. It is a great pin.
Quoted from PBFan:The slight edge for most people would probably be Tron because it has deeper rules and more to do but for those of you who haven't spent much time on IM please don't short change it. It is a great pin.
Tron really doesn't have deeper rules, does it? They're about the same I thought, Tron has about the same sort of fast scoring, multiballs, etc, and then the wizard Portal while IM has Jericho, Do or Die, and then Do or Die Multiball.
Quoted from PBFan:An external factor for me is the fact that my wife loves IM - her favourite!
Funny, it's my wife's favorite too. Always has been, since before I got my first IM nearly 3 years ago (she loved playing it on location)
Quoted from taylor34:To answer the original question, I think Tron's playfield is more fun to shoot overall, but IM is a more challenging game (to me anyways). I've thought about buying Tron but some upper level players have advised me not to for that reason. I'm still debating it though.
Tron has enough randomness from the disc to keep it from being too easy. Keep the disc clean so that it really whips the ball back at you. Open up the outlanes. Increase the pitch. Keep the PF waxed. Hell, put lightning flippers on it! Plenty of ways to make a pin more challenging, but I don't think you'd need to do more than a couple of these things myself. The Gem shot alone keeps it from being too easy.
Both can be brutal games, of which I give the edge to IM. But I own a Tron and I think it's one of the best games. The flow of the shots is better in Tron I think due to the upper flipper. I also like the multiballs better in Tron, you really can't go wrong with Quorra MB. And finishing off SOS to start portal (especially when they're all lit) is very satisfying. I don't get same "just on more game" feel from IM that I do with Tron.
And Tron has the infuriating GEM shot too.

Well basically what I'm afraid of is that every game will eventually devolve into hitting the GEM shot at the end, as when I was playing it before that's what every game seemed to be heading to...I don't want every game to be the same in that aspect. Kind of like the Goldeneye I'm playing now, most games devolve into whether I can hit Q's pen or not, which makes it a little repetitive...I can make it harder, but that core issue is still there no matter what I do. With IM right now every game plays out differently.

If that is your concern, it's valid.
Tron also involves a lot of hits to Quorra. No way around that. Doesn't bother me at all though, even though other pins that require a lot of shots to the same place do bug me, including a lot of up the middle shots on Wh20.
Quoted from Pimp77:I think Tron will win just because there is 5 times as many owners...but I prefer IM. It has a better draw for that one more game appeal, better theme, better sounds. Tron is fun, but it's no IM.
Tron is barely in my top 5 of Sterns released since IM. Says a lot for what Stern is doing nowadays. I appreciate Tron and ill own one someday. Aside from its charms (cool look and music, excellent theme integration) I think a lot of people like it because it's not that hard and it's the darling of modders.
Trons value will diminish a bit over the years while IMs is going to the moon. Why? IM is better.
Quoted from NY2Colorado:Both are super fast and challenging and get the adrenaline pumping.
No wrong choice here.
This is the real answer!
Both are great games. Tough, brutal, challenging with that "one more game" factor.
For me, IM wins. It's got one thing that I haven't found in any other game. Do or Die. The pressure to get all the items lite on one ball and then have a shot lite for big points is awesome. I love that. That alone puts the game on another level.
Cheers,
Duane
Tron is better, but both are amazing games. Tron has better combo shots though. Hit a 4 or 5 way combo on Tron and end it with an End of Line jackpot and you'll feel like you just validated yourself as a pinball god.
The rush of Iron Man is incredible though. Few games fight back at you nearly as hard.
Quoted from kvan99:Tron but it's close...IM's layout needed a little more refinement, the Iron monger toy is too big and too close to the flippers. A blind guy can hit that.
However - it has a magnet in front of it that attacks you in crazy random ways after each hit. Easy to hit - but tough to react to! That magnet is what took an "decent bash toy" to a "super fun bash toy".
I love both games, but it's not even close for me: Tron by a mile! The three flipper setup, spinning disc, gem shot, light show, music, and combos seal the deal for me. Both have buttery-smooth flow, but Tron just has the "it" factor.
Quoted from Frax:At the price that people are asking for Trons these days you might as well just buy an Iron Man.
Both are strong candidates to be produced again. Never pay more than NIB for a Stern less than 5 or 6 years old. Despite what anyone says, it can go back into production at any time. SM, LOTR, Tron, TSPP-- all high demand games that had multiple runs over multiple years.

Mmmm...yes and no. I think it's highly unlikely for TSPP/LOTR to get run again due to the ancient Whitestar boards. SM isn't likely as Sony has moved onto The Amazing Spider-Man reboot...they wouldn't license the old movie as a product again. Tron's unlikely as Disney just doesn't care about the property. IM - that gets a maybe since the Robert Downey Jr. Movieverse Iron Man isn't likely to change anytime soon. It's still a relevant property.

Hey Rare- You missed my point a little bit, I think. I realize that many of the games that I listed are no longer really relevant to be produced yet again. The point is that they were produced when they were relevant with many runs over many years in some cases. That's all. Spending 6K for an HUO IM or worse yet $7750 on another thread would be pretty tough to take if (big IF, of course-- I get that), if IM is released, or worse yet as a premium or LE.

Oh yeah, I agree...spending that much on an IM may or may not be a gamble...it's certainly silly IMO. I just think it's a case by case basis on whether a possible reproduction is likely. In Tron's case - I feel like it's 100% done. IM seems more likely...but prob won't happen either. Who knows.
