Ill try to summarize:

During a game the 3 bank got stuck half way down

Put in motor test and tried to operate motor with menu buttons and flipper buttons.

The motor did not move in that test but a puff of smoke appeared from under the playfield

I removed, cleaned, regreased the motor and tested it and it was working just fine

I grounded the transistor (Q29) and the motor moved up and down but hitting the 3 targets in gameplay does not make the bank go down

When I turn on the machine the bank goes down and up to find home

The "disable motor bank" in settings is set to "no".

The up and down limit switches on the motor test fine in switch test.

I reversed the CPU to Driver ribbon cable and firmly reseated the ASIC chip and no improvement.

Still not working and still no idea where the smoke came from.

WTF? Any ideas?

I would try the AFM owner's thread. Those guys are experts!

Did you test to see if the targets in the drop bank are working and showing up in test correctly? It is possible that the smoke came from the motor board that the drop bank motor is connected to.

Have you verified that the bank switches all register properly in edge test?

oops...I dont know how I missed your post ... as you mentioned, I would also be concerned about not finding the source of the smoke.

Needed a factory reset so machine didn't think it was still broken. If game recognizes issues with motor up/down switches it disables motor. Once fixed it takes a few power cycles (machine powers up and moves motor up/down) to clear error. Factory reset accomplishes this immediately. Some fool on fb figured it out

I guess a factory reset clears all puffs of smoke.

Haha yes sorry for the delay in getting back to this thread. Cleaning the motor out and adding new grease solved the smoke issue. The factory reset cleared the credit dot and got me back in action. All is well now! Thanks again Beemus!

Congrats that the issue is solved!
But still think it’s partialy solved. Cleaning and greasing has nothing to do with smoke ....
That would bug me big time, don’t you leave your machine on and unattended sometimes?
The tought of a possible fire-hazard would freak me out (just my 2 cnts)

I am hoping the small amount of smoke that came up through the playfield came from the motor when I was trying to operate it in motor test. It would not budge so maybe it heated up trying to turn? I pretty much never leave games on and unattended. Just on when I am playing.
