Looking forward to your progress, man I love me some TZ.

#55 9 years ago

Thanks for the updates, I'd love to restore one of these myself!

I'm pretty limited for the weekend, I'm having a medical thing. But I did manage to get the new cabinet and my buddy convinced me to have him seal the inside bottom wood with some clear poly. Made perfect sense.

Hopefully tomorrow he can help me move it into my basement. I need to get the ground braid in along with a ton of other little details...

Just in case anyone wants to know, this is a cabinet from VirtuaPin. Brandy-new, here is how it showed up, decals installed nicely. Really really pleased.

That's a sweet cabinet and set of decals!

Kinda limited with mobility this weekend, but spent a bit of time on this.

Broken slot machine scoop anyone?

Pulled all of the coils from their mechs. Here is a lovely lineup of nasty coil sleeves. Still absolutely amazes me that people won't replace these. They are easy, cheap, and make an incredible difference.
Maybe folks just don't like to get dirty?

That last one on the right was from a flipper. Nasty!

And I'm going to need to do a few new flipper coils. Two of them had the coils stuck in them...was always told this means there was some heat damage and to replace them....

Amazing how many screws are in these machines. These are from the bottom of the playfield so far....

2014-12-14 10.20.25.jpg2014-12-14 10.20.25.jpg
#61 9 years ago

And here's where we end for today. Coils are loose, screws are out of everything, flippers pulled...all that's left is to peel off the harnesses.

Once thats done I just need to remove the last bits and this playfield gets put to the side and I can get into some new playfield goodness...

Congrats! TZ is a great pin. Own one myself. Nice epoxy floor by the way! I have exactly the same looking epoxy floor in my basement. I purchased the Rustoleum epoxy and clear coat kits to do it.

Just brought the cabinet into my basement. Probably should not have done it until after the medical stuff is done tomorrow, but I did. Idiot me spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to fit it around one of the turns into my basement since it looked like it was a bit large. Widebodies always are super tight.

Smacked my forehead when I remembered it's a friggin empty cabinet. The backbox hinges are held on by two bolts. 60 seconds later it was in two pieces and down safely. So the playfield is almost stripped, and the new cabinet is home and ready to be prepped....

And I fixed the switch matrix issue on my Medieval. Not bad for a guy in the middle of a 72 hour brain EEG...

Not much progress tonight. Spent time playing Indy a bit. But wanted to feel like I was making progress, so I broke out some nice new parts. After going through all of this effort it didn't make sense to recondition a lockdown receiver or coin door. NEW NEW NEW!

Lots of time with the compressor today. First in...brand new playfield glass channels...

2014-12-23 09.05.47.jpg2014-12-23 09.05.47.jpg
#73 9 years ago

And now for the scary part. Cabinet did not come drilled for playfield support brackets.

So I used my Indy as a template, measured ten friggin times, then taking a drill to my brand new cabinet was pretty stressful....

But, surprisingly, everything lined up perfectly when done!

And then ground braid. Lots and lots of ground braid

But all done and in. Even threw in some new flipper buttons.

And it's on legs for now!

So next I need to start on the wiring. Transformer, stuff like that. And backbox.

Beautiful restoration!

How did you bend the handle on your hydraulic cart? I have that same cart, but the handle is straight up and down, and I've been wondering what's the best way of bending it.

Many thanks,

#76 9 years ago

Thanks again Geckster for all your kind help!

#77 9 years ago

Wow drilling the cab! That's impressive and nerve racking. Top notch!

#78 9 years ago

Your pictures here convinced me never to attempt a playfield swap.

#79 9 years ago

Oh come on...swaps aren't that bad

As for the cart...pretty easy. Two people standing on the cart and gently push.

Lots of other things to do, but glad to finally see progress here...gotta really get things on track and back together. Between the playfield and cabinet being apart I have storage bins everywhere....

#80 9 years ago

Had to make some progress this morning because I need to make some room...

First order of business...more holes needed to be drilled into the pristine woodwork

I just need to put the knocker back in and the boards and I'm done with the head...for now

Busy morning. Needed to get some bins emptied. Cabinet almost done. Boards back in the backbox. Speaker panel back. Transformer back in place. Almost ready to break out the chrome....

Then I can get back to the playfield. But man, this is looking really really nice....

Took a break from the nice clean cabinet to the old nasty playfield...I was sick of looking at it in the rotisserie

I had prepped it, so it was just a matter of doing what I do and pulling the wiring off and clipping it temporarily to the rotisserie....pretty nice

I dig these pictures. Only one opportunity during this process when you can place two playfields side by side and compare.

Some slight color variations as as normal. And you can see the new PF is drilled for the third magnet.
