tell these things to the people who actually want to see or try and play your games but In here you had the chance to portray yourself as one of the greatest pinball repair men on the planet and you just went and threw it all away

I thought any night is a great night for drinking? lol

Quoted from Skrippy:

Did the seller not warn you or tell you they functioning properly or had problems?

This is a non-issue. You can leave a pin sit still and turn it on and have a new problem arise, and certainly if you move them that invites even more chances of a problem from vibration, temp change between locations etc. I work on commercial electronics and even though we run a thorough quality check on every piece, on occasion something works perfectly at QC and then fails at arrival to the customer - right out the box. S*it happens.

I've bought 3 pieces of fuckin shit and I'm sick of trying to fix these fuckin things. For the price I paid for each of these machines I should be able to enjoy them, but no one fuckin problem after another. Anybody want to buy a JP, JD, or the Getaway. I'm done with pinball.

Easy tiger! No need to throw a tantrum. Tell of some of the problems with your games. Many on pinside like to help.Things can turn around very quickly.

#59 10 years ago

I take it you did end up buying from barrywnj.? I hope you have a local tech, you should avoid working on your pins as upset as you are. Keep the sledge hammer in the garage for now.

Hope all ends well.

How do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time.

To the OP, as someone in this hobby less than a year, I understand. If you need anything done with the boards, I would probably simply recommend sending them off for repair. I had my HS board repaired and it only cost me like $60. I had spent hours trying to do something I don't know much about and got really frustrated.

Take it slow. You can post specific issues here on the site (include photos if possible) and people WILL be able to help you. I have fixed a number of issues that one year ago I simply thought would be impossible for me to do.

That being said, there is still A LOT I don't understand and am gravitating toward newer machines which, hopefully, won't have as many issues. (Well, maybe...I'm looking at picking up a few older ones in the next week or so )

Good luck figuring your issues out. Oftentimes it seems like fixing one little thing can solve numerous issues.

Shortly after scoring 750M on my finally set up Fish Tales the monitor just quit. After one week of being on a lot and played a lot. Oh well. After owning 7 recent Sterns, its time to learn how this shit really works.

Sounds like a case study of why MMR will be huge. You get the one of the greatest games of all time and none (or a lot less) of the headaches.

#84 10 years ago

We've all felt like this, we've all been there done that. Whenever I sell a game these days, I am very clear that these games are really old and there is a good chance that they won't work when they get home just by being moved. I've never had a problem, but I want people to know what they are in for.

Last night, I folded DW's head down, put it on the pinball skates, rolled it into the next room. Lifted the head, leveled it out, fired it up and the DMD was garbled. This was after it worked fine in the sellers garage and I had to reflowe header pins on the a ribbon cable connector, replace a tip36-c, switche out U5 on the CPU board along with 2 resistors. I usually refer to it as the demons My DW has the demons, but slowly they work themselves out.

When I picked up a WH20 a few years ago, I didn't complete a full game for the first 3 months, I had to take the glass off damn near every game.

But, then the problems work themselves out.

I'm new to this too and sometimes it's frustrating when you don't know where to start. But there are so many resources here and online to help you out. You've got three machines. Pick the one that's the closest to working 100% and start asking dumb questions. That's usually my strategy!

#86 10 years ago

I'll come buy all three this weekend. Make me an offer I can't refuse and fill a photobucket with pictures. I'm about 8 hours one way, but I'll leave tonight and bring you cash tomorrow.

I'm totally serious. PM me if you are too.

Okay there, Mr. Holier than Thou.

You know things get get frustrating in this hobby. I'd rather he vent here than kick his dog or something.

#89 10 years ago

Politically incorrect, brutally honest. I felt that way through my first pins also. Got one that had termites, etc. Welcome to the nightmare. Resistance is futile.

#90 10 years ago

Suggest a hobby that's a little less stressful:

Stamp collecting, Butterfly netting, Crocheting (or Macramé), weekend Monkism, or joining a nice Barbershop quartet.

I was so frustrated last night trying to get the Getaway fixed, I had to walk away. Sorry for the harsh language, I edited it and just needed to take a break.

Send me a PM of the issues you are having. Or start a new thread here. Or send a thread to the front range pinball group. I am by no means an expert but I might be able to help. And there are others around that are good guys that will help you out too. Just ask!

But I totally get your frustration paying so much for something and have it not work as expected.

Anyway send me a PM I can try to help you out.

Fact #1 - anything (and I mean anything) that has any kind of mechanical moving parts is going to at some point in it's life break down.

Fact #2 - pinballs have many mechanical aspects to them.

Fact #3 - there is nothing you can do to change Fact #1.

Also mentioned that "you bought junk" - well if that was the case, it will take a good amount of time to strip down the machine and go through it all and replacing and checking it all out. If you have not done so and are one that just deals with an issue when it becomes unplayable then you are only hurting yourself. Remember, the games you list are around 20 years old already. 20 years is a long time for anything mechanical.

I have seen this many times in the car hobby (my other hobby) - people buy an older car cause it is cool. Car breaks down, which older ones will do, just a matter of when. They 'fix' it with some 'duct tape and bailing wire' to get it going and figure it's good enough (or the problem is ignored as they can "drive" the car). Down the road the problem becomes more serious, so more patch work, again leading to another issue down the road and then all of a sudden the car becomes a POS. I know 1 fellow right now, thinks here can rebuild an engine and has done so, engine does run but he says it shakes severely at idle. But get this, he says it 'feels' just fine while not at idle/driving and is not concerned over that "small issue". I give it a few months before it is dead (once again).

Pinball related - I recently bought a Getaway myself. The PO thought it worked just fine and had "no issues" with it. Let me tell you that IMHO there are a few things wrong with it that I point out - DMD on it's way out, issues with a couple switches not working (game would tell you to do a test report when turned on), ramp in back not working correctly, ball shooter not working correctly, burnt lamps. All of which he didn't notice (or care) as the game still "played". Plus the fact that he only has the games to play and has no interest in repair/maintaining them, which was good for me as I got a deal on it.

#97 10 years ago

There's a guy in Flint, MI that will be glad to take them off your hands!

But seriously, I have three projects going right now, a little overwhelming, but they don't all need to be finished in the next week. Take the one that needs the least amount of work and finish that first, then move on to #2. That way you can have one to play while working on #2 and 3. Then expect to do a little more work to #1 when you're all done, as I noticed last night on mine!

And always walk away and have a few drinks and read Pinside, or look at porn, or whatever you need to do to calm down, advice from a pro!

LOL. That's a down under beer for sure.

No way! It's from my wonderful hometown Munich!

And that's just an ordinary beer mug over here, by the way...

Give the poor guy a break! Who hasn't felt like taking a sledgehammer to your beloved pin(s) from time to time...

When I got my first pin, a Lotr Le, I thought at first it was the dumbest most idiotic thing I'd ever done, as usual with any Nib, sh*t was popping off and flying around all over the table and I was trying to figure out wtf went where, oh yeah, those were fun times........6 pins later and 4 more on the way you better have some idea as to wtf you are doing and it has become kind of fun tinkering with these b*tches, of course with mucho cerveza in the fridge to take the stress edge off!........

I can't wait to hook up with some of you "beer drinkers" down the road, we'll see how a good ole Texas boy stacks up with you lightweight litre drinkers.......

#100 10 years ago

Agreed, its an unwritten rule that if your purchasing used pins, to expect them to require a lot of routine maintenance once you get them to that point. You have to remember that the seller is probably the 5 or 6th guy to own the pin so you really have no history on any repairs to the game.

Also I am guessing, that the OP purchased these games from BarryWnj as there is an early post. So good chance these games are re-imports with plenty of hack jobs on them.
