This is going to be great! Bring it on Bryan!

Bryan, when you are doing a high end restore do the boards just get cleaned or do you send them somewhere for what I have heard people call "bulletproofing"? I am just curious as I know things are prone to failure on boards after so many years.

#19 10 years ago

Thanks Bryan. This is what I was thinking about doing. Just wasn't sure if it was worth doing if the boards were 100%.

#30 10 years ago

Yes this is great stuff. We are very lucky to be getting this info. Bryan, I am curious when your redo a cabinet what upgrades and parts are a must. I know you swear by the Stern style cabinet protectors and am now seeing in this thread that there are inside the cabinet upgrades for leg bolts? Anything else thats a must?

This thread is awesome. With McCune and Bryan adding insight this should turn out to be something awesome. McCune I am still looking forward to seeing what you might have to offer up with your next restoration since you said there might be something coming from you in a few weeks. I now have a reason to be excited about coming to Pinside again.

I've heard that tumbling metal parts can take off the coating from the metal so they oxidize easily. Any truth to this? Does it matter in the grand scheme of things? When you tumble do the screws and parts look as shiny and clean as new?

#77 10 years ago

I believe McCune told me awile ago about a tumbler called Thumblers tumbler or something like that. He said they work well and are a decent price.

Quoted from Bryan_Kelly:

I could show you all kinds of tools, John, but I don't want to bore people to death with this thread.

I am with john. I am very interested in what tools make the job the easiest and work well for this application.

Bryan, any insight as to who makes the best decals? I have heard they are not all created equally. Awesome work.

#270 10 years ago

I was actually hoping McCune would chime in more myself. His work is top notch. Bryan, I remember you telling us that you had shot tons and tons of video footage and its just never been finished and may never be. Have you ever thought about just having it professionally edited and just charge for the videos? I personally could care less if you make a buck from teaching people the ins and outs of this stuff. Also people if you go to you tube there is a great video from Bryan on how to clean and repaint a coin door. Great stuff!

Bryan, didn't you trade your left nut for a Congo Transformer and the right for other pinball parts? Hopefully the plunger still works for ya.

By far one of my favorite postings to read of the year.

100% Agree.... Lots of useless crap and bickering on this site these days. I wish there alot more Technical how too's on this site. GREAT work Bryan.

I personally think the spring steel looks much better the way it looks naturally. I guess it depends on if your shooting for a correct restore or just a totally redone one with upgrades along the way.

I deeply regret selling my BSD, it was in great shape too. Damn you Bryan!

Top notch work Bryan. I am sad that I won't have a good restoration thread to follow now.
